Where Can You Try The 2024 BTCC Cars For Free?

2023.png
It is no secret that the 2024 British Touring Car Championship field will not officially be coming to rFactor 2 this year. But where else can you get your 2024 BTCC fix – and ideally for free?

The Motorsport Games saga is now synonymous within sim racing. If you are not caught up on the situation, check out our BTCC article or our latest update. In short, TOCA has terminated the licensing agreement with MSG, including the BTCC game planned for 2024. It looks like support for rFactor 2 was also stopped when Le Mans Ultimate hit the virtual shelves. Heading into 2024, this leaves the BTCC without any official sim racing title to attach itself to.

However, the beauty of sim racing is that there is a vibrant modding community behind most of the major titles, Assetto Corsa being the standout example. This short article will cover some of the main free ways to get behind the wheel of a BTCC car.

How To Try The 2024 BTCC Cars

Assetto Corsa Mods

Within the world of Assetto Corsa, BTCC mods are plentiful and for the most part, free! There is a mod for the 2019 season with all the cars and drivers floating around the web. Driver suits and helmets as well as further liveries are also available from RaceDepartment. Alongside this, there are more modern and classic liveries available.

If classic racing is more your style, there are plenty of super touring options from the golden era of the BTCC, the 1990s. From early Vauxhall Cavaliers to the iconic Nissan Primera and Volvo S40, there is something for everyone. Our review of Thruxton circuit from the late 90s is a great place to start!

Fast and committed. Two factors every driver has to have to succeed at Thruxton.

rFactor 2 Mods

Whilst not as popular as Assetto Corsa mods, rFactor 2 mods will undoubtedly give its audience the option to drive the 2024 cars in the future. The TOCA licence to MSG was terminated in 2023, meaning official 2024 liveries are not to be expected. However, the incredibly committed rFactor 2 community will undoubtedly add 2024’s liveries to the appropriate cars.

rFactor 2 will massively benefit from the 2024 BTCC liveries. Despite them being added in with mods. It adds a reason for people to play the game again. After the release of Le Mans Ultimate, rFactor 2 has fallen to the proverbial wayside. The main issue though. The lack of any new BTCC events in the future.

Gran Turismo 7

If you are on console, hear us out… Gran Turismo 7. The Japanese racing title has one of the most detailed and user-friendly livery creators in sim racing. Whilst the physical touring cars might not be present, you can create the 2024 BTCC grid with enough imagination and creativity.

Cars recreated from previous seasons of the BTCC within Gran Turismo 7 come in a wide variety. Remember, for something to be fun it does not always have to be ultra realistic. These re-creations are a fantastic way to get people familiar with the liveries and for them to experience driving their favourite team’s cars without a powerful PC.

Haha, this site is in my head; apart from a Nurburgring video I'm going to look at where else you can drive any cars from the BTCC in games from the 1990s up to current day.

I just need to get one more game before I can think about making that video. I've got 23 games (no mods) already to consider, mostly on PC, but a few on other platforms.

It'll include games where just a few teams (or even a single car) from the BTCC has popped up. I'm sure you can think of some of them, but there are a good few rarities :)

Touring is my favorite category but it's totally neglected by companies and, in my experience, most sim drivers really don't care about it. Even in my online RACE07 days, most virtual leagues were racing anything else with this game.

A long time ago, I tried the Nissan Primera mod for AC and it's really a blast. Unfortunately, this sim AI is pure garbage (don't know if it's better now because of mods) and I never knew about a server racing it. BTW: This is basically my story with AC, as my favorite mods end being used only for free training and some trackday simulation (this is what this game's AI is fit for... as bad as IRL lol).

My one wish for rF2, before it is consigned to the sandbox, is that they implement some way to run multi-race weekends / grid editing in single player.

BTCC is one of those series I never gave much mind to...until S397 released the DLC and I bought it out of curiosity. Haven't been able to get enough of throwing the 330 around Thruxton with a full grid since and tune in for real races, or at least race highlights when the opportunity presents. Truly an underrated series with some seriously competitive driving.

Glad to see someone mention the shelving of rf2, now all us RF2 users want to know is when it will be pulled back of the shelf and gets some attention that it needs. I like many others i have spoke to think it will just get some of LMU features and nothing else career mode ect done by MSG not S397. so really nothing at all.

BTCC is great in rF2... Cool in AC, but is lacking elsewhere...

Depending on how the whole MSGS dilemma shakes out rF2 has every chance to have a similar experience to AC where the UI is done out of game in a content manage and you load straight to the track or onto the server...

How far AC has come since the devs stopped work on it is amazing, rF2 doesn't have anywhere near that kind of workload needed... Even with it's magical spaghetti code being what it is...

Its insane that we can have an article where one of the games and mods is from the the other one and ripped.
Whatever you see in RFactor2, is the very same model in AC....

LMU is the ONLY chance of survival for rFactor 2 and for any future support/development.
Just today one of the developers said that the latest improvements introduced on LMU's AI will trickle down in the next rF2 update (no promise on how soon, but the intention is there, just not enough people).

Not entirely correct. The assetto version appears to be a 2K version. You can tell from the template, its half the resolution. Another thing, AC does not have the same tyre model so these BTCC cars should and only should be experienced in rF2. Plus I dont think the AC ones come from a legal source and might well be pirated.

My one wish for rF2, before it is consigned to the sandbox, is that they implement some way to run multi-race weekends / grid editing in single player.
I know I'm a solid month late to this but there is a way to have basic multi-race weekends in rF2 already though I will say that it's a bit of a faff and requires using a text editor (like Notepad) to make a couple of small changes to your player.json file

That file can be found by going to rFactor 2's base directory (you can get here by right clicking rF2 in Steam and going to Manage then Browse local files) and from there go into the UserData folder. From there go into the player folder where you'll be able to find a file called player.json (depending on your Windows settings it might show up as just player). It could be worth backing up that file before editing to be safe but you'll probably be fine either way

You'll also have to make these changes before you open the game otherwise the game won't see them and they'll then be overwritten when you close the game and it saves any possible changes you've made in the UI

In that file you'll need to make changes to two lines labelled "GPRIX Num Race Sessions" (on line 699) and "CURNT Num Race Sessions" (on line 672). I'm not sure you need to change the second one but I tend to just in case though I'd only change that one directly before doing a single player race just in case it somehow caused a problem if you did multiplayer next (I doubt it would but you can never be too safe)

As the names suggest, these lines set the number of races in your next Grand Prix (the game's name for single player) event and for your current/most recent event in any mode

After each label will be a colon followed by a number which is set by the UI to either 1 or 0 based on whether you have the Race setting in the Quick Event menu set to on or off. After that number the line ends with a comma (so for example it will probably be "GPRIX Num Race Sessions":1,)

In this file however you can set these numbers to be any whole number between 0 and 4 which as the labels suggest sets how many races there will be in your next Grand Prix (the games name for single player) event and your current/most recent event (from any mode). You can try setting it higher than 4 if you want but I'm pretty sure it goes back to 4 when you open the game if you do (it's been a while since I tried that though so I could be misremembering)

There are two different weekend formats you can choose from by changing a different pair of lines in the same file, specifically "GPRIX Disable Semi Final Logic" (on line 690) and "CURNT Disable Semi Final Logic" (on line 667). From memory, I've only had success here by changing both lines at the same time

They have the same format as the previous pair but instead of a number it can either be set to true or false (for example "GPRIX Disable Semi Final Logic":false,)

When it's set to true, you get a typical race format where qualifying sets the grid for race 1; the results of race 1 set the grid for race 2; the results of race 2 set the grid for race 3 and the results of race 3 set the grid for race 4. It's been a while since I tried this but I don't think there are any reversed grids or anything like that

As the label suggests, when it's set to false you get what the game calls Semi Final Logic. When you have it set to 1 or 2 races, the format is the same as before (so quali sets the grid for race 1 and the results of race 1 set the grid for race 2 - there's definitely no reverse grid here either)

With more races however the grid changes dramatically. In a 3 race format, the field gets split in half with drivers that qualified in odd positions taking part in race 1 and drivers that qualified in even positions taking part in race 2. The field then reunited for the final race with the grid being decided by the results of the 'heat races' with the winners starting on the front row, the drivers finishing second in their heat starting on the second row and so on

I haven't experimented with this format enough to be sure exactly what decides which side of the grid each group start the final race on but it seems to be based on the either the heat winners qualifying time or the fastest lap they set in their heat race, I'm just not sure which one it is

A 4 race format with the Semi Final Logic works in a similar way only this time the field gets split into 3 groups with drivers qualifying 1st, 4th, 7th etc. in race 1; drivers qualifying 2nd, 5th, 8th etc. in race 2 and drivers qualifying 3rd, 6th, 9th etc. in race 3. Like before the field reunites for the final race with the heat winners starting 1st, 2nd and 3rd; the second placed drivers from the heats starting 4th, 5th and 6th; and so on

This means that with the Semi Final Logic, no driver takes part in more than 2 races even with a 3 or 4 race format

As for grid editing in single player, this used to be possible until the 2022 UI update (though I personally never managed to make it work) but should still be doable using private dedicated servers (technically multiplayer I know but in theory you should be able to run on the same computer you race on) and the /editgrid command though it would probably be a royal PITA and I haven't tried it myself yet to know how well it actually works

Either way, I hope this can help even if it does seem to have turned into a lengthy essay at some point (sorry about that!)

Wow! Thanks so much for the extremely detailed explanation.

I have done the whole byzantine ritual of setting up a server on my lan and running races through that to be able to access console commands, but quickly decided it was too much of a pain in the butt and gave up on doing things that way.

I did, however, not know about:
"GPRIX Num Race Sessions"
"CURNT Num Race Sessions"
"GPRIX Disable Semi Final Logic"
"CURNT Disable Semi Final Logic"

I will definitely have a play about with those to see what can be achieved. Perhaps with "GPRIX Num Race Sessions":2, and "GPRIX Disable Semi Final Logic":true, and then just running a third race with a random grid could be a workable solution.

It sounds like, if that kind of background is already present in the game, it should be capable of having a working BTCC format implemented by the devs, if they had the will to do it. I really hope the renewed BTCC interest results in more than just a couple of livery packs. I'm not sure how much money they could make selling only some new liveries anyway.

In any event, thanks for taking the time to explain everything so well; really excellent and I do appreciate it.

Cheers
