What Was The Best Thing Added to Sim Racing in 2021?

Best New Sim Racing Products of 2021 01.jpg
Many new and exciting things were added to sim racing in 2021, and we want to hear about your favourite(s).

It's the time of year for celebrations, family time, relaxation, and lazy end-of-year articles summarizing the past year.

But in all seriousness, we're in the midst of an amazing time for our hobby, and 2021 has been another great year. Continuing our popular "Have Your Say" articles (for which the RD team is immensely grateful for your support), we want to hear what was the best new thing you experienced in sim racing this year. We've left a few examples below, but whatever game, car, track, mod, hardware or otherwise brought you happiness this year, we want to hear about it.

Here are some of the many things we heard you liked this year:

Best New Sim Racing Products of 2021 02.jpg

  • Fanatec CSL DD - When the price of the Fanatec's CSL DD was revealed, it seemed almost too good to be true. Direct Drive wheelbases had become synonymous with the $1,000+ price level, so $349 for the CSL DD was an absolute steal. The past several months have provided us with countless reviews of the wheelbase, and with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the sim community it's clear that Fanatec has given us a new frame of reference for how sim racing wheelbases should be priced.
  • Automobilista 2's Racin' USA DLC - The two parts of the Racin' USA DLC that Reiza brought us this year represented huge steps forward for the sim. AMS2 started 2021 struggling to find its audience, and has ended the year with a growing fanbase thanks in no small part to the Racin' USA DLCs. The first part contained three excellent tracks along with GTE and DPi cars, and part 2 brought us classic Indycars and two more tracks. The release of each part was timed with major game updates, and each was a leap forward for the title this year.
  • iRacing's Mercedes W12 - iRacing is loved for its online racing experiences, but less appreciated for its Formula 1 cars. That stigma was shattered late in 2021 with the release of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance. Codemasters' agreement with Formula 1 keeps almost all current year official content in the F1 game exclusively, but the team at iRacing were able to release a 2021 F1 car in partnership with the Mercedes team. The car is excellent, and a real treat for F1 fans.
  • RaceRoom's Ranked Online Racing - The concept of ranked server racing in sims is something that often discussed, but seldom implemented. RaceRoom was able to put action behind their words this year, however, and delivered a revised online racing experience including ranked servers. The active player count hasn't yet hit the numbers anyone had hoped, but the system is solid and provides excellent racing action.
These are just a few of the impressive things that came to us this year, so let us know your favourite or favourites in the comments below.

Don't forget fholgers FSR mod for openVR games that can be used in many steamVR titles like AMS2 and ACC to gain more fps and lower frametimes. It is so much better than ACCs original DLSS or FSR option because you can define the render area and reduce the quality outside the sweetspot. A gamechanger for VR simmers!

Happy new year!

True ! Forgot about it but I shouldn't be, it's indeed the most important thing for ACC besides the physics update and also very important for other sims like AMS2. Kunos it's own FSR implementation is much worse for VR. And especially the latest version with NIS (nvidia image scaling) is GREAT.

But I'm still waiting for the AMS2 version of the mod to include nvidia image scaling.. NuScorpi haven't replied on this one yet, he's the one that modded the fholgers for AMS2, but only the old version without NIS.

Fanatec's CSL DD is the best thing in Sim Racing last year.

I have both a Simucube 2 Pro and VRS and thus I'm not the market audience for the CSL DD, however it really opens up quality sim racing hardware to the masses and like the CSW & Podium range before it, will be a catalyst to grow out this niche hobby to a wider audience. And that is good for all of us.

Fanatec gets a lot of disparaging comments online, however they continue to push forward and innovate.

Assetto Corsa + CM + CSP + PURE + all the Patreon developers including TODDK for photogrammetry pioneering (Santa Monica Mountains - watch this space). I own just about every sim racing and car driving title but I always come back to AC, it just won't die and keeps getting better EVERY year.

any info on this in RD Forums or elsewhere?
The original mod can be found at github:

For AMS2 you need a modified version from reiza forum.

Just copy two files in one folder, adjust quality/performance, sharpness, render radius and decide between fsr or nvidias nis. Thats all, very easy. Performance boost up to 25% in VR. :D

Just to repeat the probable majority, AMS2 coming of age and now being worth the £80 EA I paid is 2021s best sim racing addition for me. Especially now with the ability to have full custom liveries and AI drivers, the latter being so much simpler to edit than any other title I know.
Rfactor 2 now uninstalled (and 200GB reclaimed) and looking at steam charts, I'm not alone.

A decent pick up and play. Still lots more maturing needed and features, but no longer as frustrating and lacking as it once was. Roll on AMS2 2022.

100000% that's me this year.
And I say this with over 1100h on Steam.
Deinstalled and moved on (to AC for now)

As someone who just tried it for a small time, what are the issues?

I do remember finding the tyre model and ffb feeling amazing.

Premium
@Wotever's telemetry (and other) extensions and refinements to SimHub
facilitated supporting about any motion, tactile and other sim feedback imaginable.

You are right... Blurry graphics are awesome
Glad you also enjoy blurry graphics! All jokes aside, the performance in vr is greatly improved. And if it helps people with lower end machines, don't know what else to tell you. The option to run the game at native resolution wasn't removed so...

I too cannot understand how people can just uninstall it and move away.
I'm not an expert on simulation accuracy, but it is the only sim that tricks my brain into thinking I'm driving an actual car.
No other sim gives me that feeling, that's why I can't drive anything else.
I'm not a S397 fetishist and I would be more than willing to drive all the other sims.
But I've tried them all and can't get that natural feeling anywhere else.

Being not a VR user I can't express myself on that ^_^
But all jokes aside, the performance boost is a good thing, but the blurry aspect on screen is too anoying for me ! I really think ACC could be optimized to get sharper graphics.

Cheers

A lot. I wouldn't even know where to start. Mostly lots of small and bigger bugs that are there since years and not really getting fixed. Also the direction of development they took without fixing core issues. And latest slow down of any development.

100% agree. That's the main reason me and lots of people still play and love rF2.

I too cannot understand how people can just uninstall it and move away.
I did not uninstall it. I tried. I couldn't. I still love driving in it.

Some content in AMS2 lately does that for me. But still rF2 is much closer and better overall. I have high hopes though for AMS2. But it might still take some time.

1.8 is terrible for VR performance. 1.7< with FSR mod had the sharpest graphics/best performance. The difference is ~10-15% fps loss since ACC 1.8 in VR.

DLSS looks terrible in VR. Ghosting like an 40ms TN LCD screen, ununsable and worse performance then 1.7 with FSR/NIS mod.

The physics update of 1.8 is awesome but the visual downgrade in VR is terrible. I don't understand how you're able to use DLSS in VR... it's to blurry/ghosting... unusable imo.

You can still use the mod with the same performance/quality as before. Turn off ingame dlss or fsr, put the two files in the latest (!) openVR folder and 1.8 is as good as 1.7.

I really love the guys at Kunos for giving us two of the best sims on the planet but their VR development in ACC is absolutly underwhelming... especially compared to AC. I know UE4 is not perfect for VR, but with a few, simple engine.ini tweaks for UE4 you can increase the visuals dramatically. And this should be done by the developer and not by the simmer!

The FFB is still amazing and the best you can get, I agree.

It's really more about the development speed, the lack of response of the devs (on their own forum) and the overall state of the sim (unused potential).
Long standing issues which are not fixed nor official recognized.
Some major problems like the server crashes (Virtual 24h Le Mans, Virtual 8h of Monza)
Some smaller stuff like missing quality of paid content, stange pysics with new released cars, bugs, UI and stuff.

Look at all the blogs they have done. The current ones were the community could ask questions.
Most if not all answers are "we will look into it", "noted", or "you can make a mod yourself".

Like someone on the rf2 discord said some time ago. S397 is more an extended content creator than a dev.
They didn't fix or improve core features in years. Yes graphics, but the sim has also other major problems and drawbacks.
No physics update, no AI update, no (new) UI update, no big comp system update for years (comp system is now just around a year old but anyways).

And regarding alle the physics praise for rf2. Yes the physics are good, but rf2 isn't the best anymore.
It got overtaken quite some time ago by other sims like iRacing, ACC, AMS etc.

Why you ask?
Always lowest tire pressure is king, track temperature doesn't effect tires, no wind, rain is just overall reduced grip, strange aero physiscs were you suddenly got oversteer instead of understeer in draft (though it got fixed, but it was paid content and took way to long anyway), drifting is the fastes way around a track (got fixed too but I'm not sure) etc.

You play rf2 and have fun but as soon as you start to look at other sims you notice quite fast how much you miss out.
And just FFB or tires are not enough to keep people interested for a long timelike you can see on steamdb.

Look at the job openings they have (https://www.studio-397.com/careers/).
It shows how many important people and positions they are missing. So no long needed updates of the core game in the near future.

That they got bought by MSG didn't help neither. They lost even more development time for rf2 and people.
And for what? NASCAR Ignition

I don't see a bright future for rf2.
Sure, they can release more (paid) content (new BMW M4 GT3) but the core won't change much in the next 3-5 years I guess. I would be happy if I would be wrong and would download it again. But by then we have iRacing 2, AC2, or AMS3 or something we all don't know yet ;)

I could continue writing but that should be enough for now :D

For me, it is the other way around - every once in a while I try all the other sims and every time I notice how much I miss rF2.
FFB and tyre model are completely sufficient to keep me interested for a lifetime.
All the other aspects are completely irrelevant.
If I had a shot at real life racing and wanted to perfect my racecraft,I highly doubt I would ever touch any other sim.

rF2 has no future.
This sim will go down in history books as something that felt phenomenal but was hated by everyone because of the wrong expectations.
The developers on the other hand have shown zero interest in improving the single player experience, fixing AI problems and adding any vintage content.
Since I'm a vintage racer only, I'm perfectly happy with Group C/Cart Factor mods. Those will keep me entertained for centuries.
I've tuned my AI, I stick with the old UI and I'm good to go.

And as I've said many times before, I don't think rF2's driving feel will ever be surpassed.
Even those who used to like it have started deleting it from their PCs. Why?
Because nobody fundamentally cares about the driving feel anymore.
If it drives decent and has shiny graphics and slick UI, people are sold.
And that's why the devs of any present or upcoming sim won't give a damn about replicating the rF2's driving magic.
And it's a God damn shame.
I would gladly give up on rF2 and switch to let's say AMS2 if it only had the same feel. But unfortunately, it's not even close.
