What Was The Best Thing Added to Sim Racing in 2021?

Many new and exciting things were added to sim racing in 2021, and we want to hear about your favourite(s).

It's the time of year for celebrations, family time, relaxation, and lazy end-of-year articles summarizing the past year.

But in all seriousness, we're in the midst of an amazing time for our hobby, and 2021 has been another great year. Continuing our popular "Have Your Say" articles (for which the RD team is immensely grateful for your support), we want to hear what was the best new thing you experienced in sim racing this year. We've left a few examples below, but whatever game, car, track, mod, hardware or otherwise brought you happiness this year, we want to hear about it.

Here are some of the many things we heard you liked this year:

Best New Sim Racing Products of 2021 02.jpg

  • Fanatec CSL DD - When the price of the Fanatec's CSL DD was revealed, it seemed almost too good to be true. Direct Drive wheelbases had become synonymous with the $1,000+ price level, so $349 for the CSL DD was an absolute steal. The past several months have provided us with countless reviews of the wheelbase, and with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the sim community it's clear that Fanatec has given us a new frame of reference for how sim racing wheelbases should be priced.
  • Automobilista 2's Racin' USA DLC - The two parts of the Racin' USA DLC that Reiza brought us this year represented huge steps forward for the sim. AMS2 started 2021 struggling to find its audience, and has ended the year with a growing fanbase thanks in no small part to the Racin' USA DLCs. The first part contained three excellent tracks along with GTE and DPi cars, and part 2 brought us classic Indycars and two more tracks. The release of each part was timed with major game updates, and each was a leap forward for the title this year.
  • iRacing's Mercedes W12 - iRacing is loved for its online racing experiences, but less appreciated for its Formula 1 cars. That stigma was shattered late in 2021 with the release of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance. Codemasters' agreement with Formula 1 keeps almost all current year official content in the F1 game exclusively, but the team at iRacing were able to release a 2021 F1 car in partnership with the Mercedes team. The car is excellent, and a real treat for F1 fans.
  • RaceRoom's Ranked Online Racing - The concept of ranked server racing in sims is something that often discussed, but seldom implemented. RaceRoom was able to put action behind their words this year, however, and delivered a revised online racing experience including ranked servers. The active player count hasn't yet hit the numbers anyone had hoped, but the system is solid and provides excellent racing action.
These are just a few of the impressive things that came to us this year, so let us know your favourite or favourites in the comments below.

Fanatec CSL DD for me in particular and also for the community, DD made accessible.
Beside that nothing really noticeable, we are making incremental progress, there is at least that.
Let’s hope GPU will come down in price and up in availability in 2022, that would make it for me.

Regarding AMS2 I think that the 2 big physics/tire/handling/FFB updates were the most important. But yes, the DLC is great too.

ACC made also an great update with 1.8, it made the cars feel WAY more fun, more "alive" so more similair to AMS2, which is IMO a great thing. But with the same update the VR performance got worse so it wasn't all good... the expectation regarding DLSS were high but in the end the new unreal engine version lowered the VR performance and DLSS looked terrible in VR.

Other great thing is the Varjo brand which brought the Aero to the VR market (just in ~the last weeks of 2021, it's still not "really available"), which really sets a new standard for VR.

Happy new year to all sim racers !!! Keep on racin' !

And don't forget the "Live" and "Historic" Weather conditions in AMS2 !

IMHO AMS2 was definitely the sim that made biggest progress of all in 2021.

I started with AMS2 in the middle of 2020 and hated it, was about throw it away from my PC.
Now it has become my most favourite sim of all

The weather
The variety of tracks
The variety of cars
The now really fantastic FFB+
The improved multiplayer
The graphics which are really stunning in the meantime
The development of driving physics
The awesome VR support

Did I forget something ?

For me this was probably BeamNG together with it's Nordschleife and other improvements. It's just the needed Dark Souls of Sim Racing in the sea of games with decreasing difficulty in handling.

My realization that rFactor 2 won't progress much beyond its current state, like ever. I've basically reached fifth state on the 5 stages of grief scale: acceptance.
100000% that's me this year.
And I say this with over 1100h on Steam.
Deinstalled and moved on (to AC for now)

Other than other AMS2 improvements, I'd say Real Weather + seasonal foliage + ability to set any date and time of day.

In my opinion the LowFuelMotorsports Online racing System for ACC is a significant development , making ACC an Equal competitor to I-Racing online service. Didn't hear a pin drop from racedepartment, simply because competition to Simracing.GP maybe? :cautious:
I didn't even know about this. As somebody who is both on the fence of finally sinking money into iracing and loves multiplayer racing in ACC, this could just be it. Thank you!

The realisation that what people want from a sim, judging by the modding scene in AC...... is Forza Horizon and the smeared vaseline TAA effect from GRiD.

And why develop a game when you can simply take an exsisting one for free add a few frills and make 14k a month?

I doubt the devs of kartkraft make 14k a month.....

I'd be careful about an "equal competitor to I-Racing online service". they have about 10,000 players online each night European time. How many are there on that other system mentioned?

Well for me. the continuation of the MOD scene and those who do the hard work, to keep my sim's fresh and the improvments they bring. THANK YOU!!!
