What Does Your Dream Sim Look Like?

20221025211228_1.jpg
Everyone has different opinions. Everyone has different tastes. Everyone has the free decision to do what they want. We decided to race virtually. That is what binds us together. But what would you do within this niche we all belong to if you could design your favourite sim by any criteria?

Option 1: The Dream Already Became Reality

With the grand amount of sim racing titles out there, it would be amiss to think that nobody has found their optimum so far.

Be it any of the currently still serviced titles like Assetto Corsa Competizione, iRacing, rFactor 2, RaceRoom or Automobilista 2 or something a bit more weathered.

Assetto Corsa is still relevant, to some extent even titles like rFactor 1 or Automobilista 1 still are. Or if we're going a bit further back, many people to this day swear on their NASCAR Racing 2003.

Fact of the matter is that many possibilities are out there, and you might have found your favourite already. If so, what game have you found that ticks all your boxes?

Option 2: The Dream is Becoming a Reality

Many games out there keep on improving, be it rFactor 2 with the resource influx from Motorsport Games or Automobilsta 2 with its always-improving physics model.

But then there are the announcements of upcoming titles like Rennsport and Assetto Corsa 2 that keep people interested, more or less.

The point is there are many games in development that might scratch an itch. Is there anything coming up that you really look forward to?

Option 3: The Dream is Just a Dream

So here's my dream.

A game without any monetisation in which I can live out the management side of racing. Also, race from time to time. I want perfect physics for that, full weather support, 24-hour day-night cycle. All race tracks in the world and all racing cars in the world. All BOP'd correctly. Also mixed reality support. Also Bentley Speed 8 LMP. NEED the Bentley Speed 8.

But let's stay realistic. That ain't happening.

So if the other options weren't fulfilling, what would be your dream-dream game?

I would first say a sim that attracts the people with whom I can race cleanly and respectfully and with whom I can have social interaction and fun in general.

But substantively I would say an upgraded Assetto Corsa with a more realistic tire and damage model and many functionalities built in as standard that are now provided by sim racing platforms such as championships/series, rating and real-time penalties.
And online racing events where the free spots are filled with AI.

So maybe AssettoCorsa 2?

- AMS 2 game with AMS 1 AI
- simple editor of AI like AMS 2
- graphics like F1 or Assetto corsa competizione
- classical tracks like Nurburgring, Hockenheim, Spielberg, Silverstone, SPA, Monza (not too many because quality is more important than quantity)
- flashback like f1 codemasters series
- automatic pit stops like f1 codemasters series
- editor of pit stops like gp4 (GP4 pit and lap editor)
- 3-5 categories of cars because quality is more important for me than quantity (F1, GT, TOURING CAR, MINI)

While I totally understand that you mean official laser-scanned content. The Road Atlanta and Kyalami mod-tracks for rF2 are really good. Especially during evening/night. All those lights of houses and stuff at Kyalami! I almost ran off the track in our club race there due to not looking at the track:ninja:
Andrea1968 has a Misano with a new version of Zolder. Both are excellent versions. But we all know this :)

do you mean Kyalami from Global Endurance Modding or from Heikki?

the one from GEM was the one where I found the colours really hard.

My dream simulator would be a modern remake of Grand Prix Legends, with everything that is possible today.

Sure, I can drive 67s F1 in AMS 2, but it's not the same.

I want a complete championship with all the original tracks and drivers and also off the track 60s vibe.

The pit team has to hold up signs that I have to read as I go by. I want to see track marshals and recovery work after accidents, etc.

full joy and fun

(if there was such a thing (IDENTICAL) just with better graphics...everything else the same as the original) including seasons 96-00 (hill, villneueve, hakkinen, and "the michael")

It doesn't compare to modern hotlap sims, which have loads of physics, lighting effects... but can't simulate a full race (with decent AI) (ac, rfactor, etc)

(except acc...but it's not f1)

Option 2: rFactor 2
A game that I have been playing since the 1st beta from ISI and which has massively improved over the years (yes, some bugs were introduced as well) and more or less has become a new game in 2022. A game that runs fine on my more than 5 year old Alienware 15 R3 , with just a GTX 1070, Intel i7 7700hq and 3440x1440 ultrawide, and since this year a Fanatec GT DD Pro.
It just needs some extra functionality in the UI to save sessions. There is a workaround for that creating your own series via modmgr, but that should be possible to be done easily in the UI of the game.

My Dream Sim would be something like .....

The good things from rFactor2 such as:
  • physics,
  • ffb,
  • new sound system,
  • real road,
  • realistic weather system,
  • day and night system with working track lights,
  • modding
  • graphics (not the best on the planet, but certainly good enough for me)
  • vr support
And some new things:
  • possibility to create your own race formats with different types of qualification, mandatory pit stops and so on,
  • something like Leo FFB (which excists for rFactor 1) which translates g-forces and other things into FFB, with the possibility to save setups per car,
  • presets for everything you can set yourself like in Assetto Corsa Content Manager, including a composite of AI opponents,
  • more setting options for AI,
  • all settings accessible through the user interface and not only by edditing files,
  • safetycar which can be AI controlled or user controlled in a multiplayer race,
  • easy to setup multiplayer races (LAN and online) in a way it was in the old rFactor (never understand why we don't see this anymore in modern sims, for us it is a must have),
  • possibility to join a multiplayer session as a driver, spectator, broadcaster (for streaming or creating video's), safetycar driver or racedirector,
  • in game build tools for image capture, video capture, live streaming and hosting multiplayer sessions,
  • leaderboard which not only works during the race but also during the replay,
  • easy way to get mods into the sim, not as closed as it is in rF 2 now, but more in the way it is done in Assetto Corsa, and very important (!) all files for a car or a track in one folder, and when installing a car or a mod no other files will be overwritten,
  • dedicated tools for modders which help for creating cars and tracks,
  • decent kart physics! We are still using the old rFactor for karts, because we have found a decent kart mod in it. All other karts we have tried in different sims don't even come close to driving a real live kart.
If Motorsport Games and Studio 397 could build this in rFactor 3 I would be very happy!

GTR2 with modern graphics and VR - don't change anything else (actually maybe the menu screens). Or AMS2 gets Le Mans and a grid for a realistic modern Le Mans race. And that might yet happen.... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. I am a grown man.
Offline play, no microtransactions, full series properly sorted so I don't have to set it all up myself. And the moon on a stick.
