There’s no right or wrong way to enjoy a racing game or racing sim, but are certain titles better with a certain in-game viewpoint?

In-car, Bonnet, T-Cam and Chase Cam are all popular perspectives to race from in major racing titles. A quick search for a recent F1 title will yield a lot of T-Cam videos. Most of the content we see from racing sims like rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa and Automobilista tend to showcase cockpit cams. The immensely popular Forza and Gran Turismo series is commonly driven from a chase cam. And there are those in the sim racing community that swear by a bonnet (hood) cam.

So, why the preference by game, and what are the advantages of each?

Many of the popular racing sims tend to lend themselves better to an in-car cam for a few reasons. First, these titles are frequently driven with a wheel and pedal set, so the cockpit or helmet cam adds to the immersive experience. These titles also feature customizable view settings so the driving view can properly replicate the view of driving a real car based on the screen size and your distance from it. The bonnet and dash cams are close relatives of this view, and offer much of the same immersion and FOV advantages with less of the screen taken up by in-car instrumentation.

Codemasters’ F1 game series is unique in racing games with its T-cam view. In real-life F1, the T structure above and behind the driver's head is a discreet and minimally impactful spot for the mounting of a TV camera, so fans of the sport have become used to this perspective. This has carried over to the official game of F1 and gives players a broader view of track than the cockpit cam while also avoiding the visually intrusive halo pillar.

Chase cam is usually reserved for racing games and offers a comparatively wide view of the surroundings of your car. The precision achievable from this viewpoint tends to be less than that of the cockpit or helmet cams, so this is often reserved for racing experiences where placing the car in exact spots on corner entry, apex and trackout comes second to your proximity to other cars.

Of course, these aren’t all of the views in the racing game world. VR necessarily defaults to a helmet cam without the helmet. Art of Rally uses something entirely different. There are no rules to views in racing titles, just preferences.

We want to hear from you in the comments below. Do you have a standard driving view that you use across most or all your favourite racing titles? Or do you vary it by what you’re driving? Why do you choose that specific view?

Serious sim racers will always drive in cokpit view, because this is the view that
you have when driving a real car. Wasn't this site about sim racing, about the
simulation of driving real cars?

Of course, you can change the view if you fancy to - something a real car won't
allow. I for one only use cockpit view but sometimes change to the bonnet
view just to enjoy a bit more the track's detailing.
Having a cockpit on a small screen taking up viewing space isnt the view you have from a real car. Your actual wheel and pedals are in your room, the screen should be a windscreen view IMO, why would you need two cockpits?

ACC does this perfectly, a camera just below the windscreen join.

Edit: Pazop whats so funny?

I want always center.

I see there's various views people use and they have names, but Assetto Corsa (default launcher) doesn't have selection of view options neither in launcher options nor in-game. :( Seems like i have to painstakingly configure the view of every car and save them, and probably should backup those saves. Unless somebody else has already done it and shared them. But even still, what if you get new cars?

My view is - screw immersion, use the one you're most comfortable/fastest with.
This.
I personally prefer to drive in the middle of the car, just in front of my windshield with the hood cam.
But I change for cockpit cam in any open wheel.
I'm just more comfortable like that, having the two wheel arches perfectly at the same place relative to my position, while my view moves exactly with the car.
One thing I'm missing is the windhsield effects tho (rain, dirt on my screen, dammages etc.). I would love to have a mod doing that for me on assetto corsa.

Use Content Manager, really it's a life changing launcher.

And in iRacing there's virtual rear view mirror, that is fantastic. Far better than default Assetto Corsa. Centered and minimal space usage.

I only race in VR so cockpit makes sense and its what I have always done. Whatever other people want to use is fine for their own gaming but yes, I will think your view is gamey but for a lot of people its just a game.

I will be honest and say that if I am playing multiplayer I want everyone to have the same view and cockpit then makes sense as a racing title. I race sims where that is the case so it's not a problem for me.

I remember once, our local flying group who does a lot of dog fighting and one guy was always getting me. I couldnt figure it out until another guy said he is going to external view. I didnt even know you could on the server. While I am looking everywhere for him trying to keep spatial awereness he is in god view watching me and then pouncing. That took away a lot of the fun because it became you either do that or get your arse handed to you. I preferred the realism.
I dont think other sim racing views have quite the advantage but I am sure there are some that might make hitting those apex's a bit easier.

so which one is gonna be :O_o:

:D
Well, it's either someone says "I like a more casual experience - I drive bonnet cam etc." or "I like hardcore simulation - proper FOV, cockpit cam etc."

So I'm OK with whatever option people go with - I just don't like it when they put one half-sentence from each of the above, because I think they then contradict themselves.

Chase cam when I watch other's replays to see their braking points and entry/exit lines.
I'd advise cockpit view as well because braking points are almost meaningless, along with the specific line IMO. You care a lot more about the inputs (like wheel that you can see in the cockpit) and car yaw in the cornering stages than about geometric placements which might not make any sense to copy if you drive the car with a different yaw and inputs.

If you think you have good VR legs - try a bonnet or chase can in VR - this is quite an experience

I use cockpit only in VR, obviously, but do like halo-free open wheelers for the same reason I liked bonnet cars in 2D in the past.

Thanks for the advice! I don't literally 'copy' what others do but rather study them and see if that information can help me improve. Of course, settings vary so it's trial-and-error. Part of the hobby. :D Another way is, indeed as you say, to watch the replay in cockpit view and the pedal input. The helicopter cam of LFS was also great to see the flow of the lines, I miss that in other sims.

I use the cockpit view, Though in all honesty I think the pov purists are the biggest mongs in sim-racing.

I play only in cockpit view alligned with the drivers helmet, for total immersion in VR. I may not be the fastest, but my main purpose is to always feel like if im the driver, even if the view sucks (like in some prototypes LoL. But as said already, everyone should use the simulator the way they want, be it for immersion reasons, fast lapping reasons, confort or whatever. Just enjoy the ride! :)

Cockpit, what else. Without steering wheel since my physical wheel is in front of me. O.K. I confess: sometimes I like to sit out onto the front wing.

When I was on console I used Bonnet or Roof Cams. Once I went to PC it took me awhile but I'm 100% In-Car (only exception is on hillclimbs where I might go for Bonnet but that's rare). But my view on "Views" is whichever camera provides you the best experience.
