Ways to Race the 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtually

Le Mans Racing Games 01.jpg
With just one week left before the 89th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it’s a great time to highlight some of the ways we can enjoy racing it virtually.

A massive field of cars is set to take on the historic Circuit de la Sarthe on August 21st and 22nd for the 89th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Last year's event was held behind closed doors due to COVID-19, but the race has once again opened its doors to the public this year. Those fortunate enough to attend the race will see the reigning fastest class at Le Mans, LMP1, replaced with the Hypercar class.

There is a Le Mans / WEC game coming in the future from Motorsport Games, but for now, we can content ourselves with some excellent alternatives to recreate the famous endurance race from the comfort of our homes. Hypercar class cars have yet to establish a presence in the virtual racing world, but many current and historic classes and cars are available in select titles. Here are some ways to recreate the 24 Hours of Le Mans in some popular racing games and racing sims.

RFactor 2

RFactor 2 was selected as the platform for the FIA sanctioned 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual last year, which is high praise for Studio 397’s title. Le Mans 24h is available as DLC for rFactor 2, and can be supplemented with the Endurance Pack DLC, which brings some excellent LMP2, LMP3 and GTE cars to the sim. LMP1 is trickier to acquire since rF2 doesn’t support hybrid powertrains, but the non-hybrid Ginetta G60-LT-P1 from Global Endurance Modding can be found in the rFactor 2 Steam Workshop.

iRacing

The king of online racing is an obvious choice for enjoying some action at Circuit de la Sarthe. Although the official event has come and gone, there is still the chance to enjoy a hosted event or some hotlapping. iRacing offers LMP1, LMP2 and GTE classes.

Project CARS 2

The hotly debated Project CARS 2 title offers a surprisingly deep experience for those looking to easily recreate Le Mans in the comfort of their home. In addition to PC2 offering the standard modern track and LMP1, LMP2 LMP3 and GTE cars of recent years, those who purchase the Spirit of Le Mans DLC will get the chance to race a historic layout of Le Mans using some classic race car classes. PC2 also offers excellent day and night transitions, plus dynamic weather conditions to add layers of complexity to your experience.

Assetto Corsa

It’s no surprise that the most customizable racing sim in the world offers the chance to experience the 24 Hours of Le Mans. One of our most popular track mods here at RaceDepartment is the amazing Circuit 24H Lemans 2017 which offers AC fans the chance to race Circuit de la Sarthe in four configurations. Kunos offers several hybrid LMP1 cars and the eternal crowd favourite that is the Porsche 911 RSR, but modding is where Assetto Corsa shines. There are too many to list, but a quick search for your favourite endurance racing car past or present will likely yield a mod that can be added to your install. Assetto Corsa is also the most likely candidate to receive an endurance Hypercar in the near future.

Gran Turismo Sport

For those with a Playstation 4 or 5 console, GT Sport is still going strong, and offers players the chance to race Le Mans. The car classes are different than real world, but there are several cars on offer in the title that competed at Le Mans in recent years. This is the most cost-effective way to enjoy racing Le Mans at home, since GT Sport is currently sold through the Playstation Store for $20 and can run on a last gen console.

Something Mike forgot that I think is a pretty big thing to miss out for PCars2 is that you can actually run the 24hr event as a solo driver thanks to it still being the only sim on the market in 2021 to allow you to team up with AI and be a part of a team. Allowing full driver swaps so you can drive proper stints and then pass over to the AI and vice versa. With you in control as to when the AI will pit for you to jump in. Its a really cool oft forgotten feature.
Pcars is a ian bell game...like GTR2, so this feature was already there in 2006 ;)

Nothing beats actually going to the real 24h at Le Mans. I've been to F1 GP's, DTM and other races, but nothing comes close to Le Mans. It's a huge circuit, there are a lot of people but it doesn't feel very crowded and the atmosphere is great. It is smart to be there on time, have dinner on time in the evening and to wait a little longer before going home, to avoid the crowds.

To anyone who wants to actually race in a Le Mans 24 hour race there's one happening on the 28/29th August on the Arcis community. There are still open spots for team submissions:

lol that first Audi Coupe was said to be so bad, in some sections the car produced lift, not downforce. And the BMW? The radiator was flat and drew air up from under the car. So the lower the carwas setup for handling, the hotter the engine ran due to lack of enough air flowing up through the radiator. Good Times. :)

I would say rfactor2 easily has the best version of Le Mans, and probably the most complete roster of cars. I would highly recommend trying to find a racing club or a league that's doing the race rather though. I have tried many times to do this race with the AI and its a disaster Every. Single. Time. Maybe one day S397 will care enough to fix their AI, I doubt it, but one can dream

So a week ago I tried to recreate a 24h in Assetto Corsa. And it kinda worked using the time multiplier (and a online time calculator). Also, filling up the grid is far from ideal, I'm missing LMP2's and some GTE's. But the experience is there! Looking forward to play again tonight..... Any suggestions for AC mods for Le Mans are more than welcome!

my first 24h of virtual mans was on the dreamcast i loved this game at the time!

Oh god , this game was just Amazing on Dreamcast (clearly sup than the PS2 version ) . I drove many and many hours on 24H .

If you live in Canada, you can watch the race live on Discovery Velocity. They also broadcast the entire IMSA season live.
Watching Le Mans on there is unbearable though. The ads just destroy it. Every nine minutes I timed it at a couple of years ago. It's borderline unwatchable.

The big issue with all this stuff is lack of in race saves. GTR2 had them 15 years ago. AC doesn't. PC2 doesn't. One reason I bought ACC was mid race saving but sadly no Le Mans there.

rFactor1 had a driver swap function. We used it in our league racing when we ran the 2.4 hours of lemans. One real driver out and the other real driver in. It was sweet!!

Yep, I never understood why so few sims let you save games. Developpers should remember that simracing is a hobby and that we have lives outside of it. I wish ACC had a feature that let you accelerate tire and fuel consumption, like so many sims have. It's not that hard to implement, no? I mean, Nascar Racing 2003 had those two features working very well in 2003.

Agreed, and it's always the same ads. I don't ever want to see again that stupid Weathertec ad about the guy bringing in his car for a trade at the dealership!

I think it is frustrating trying to have a good singleplayer le mans experience nowadays.

Rfactor2 is the best candidate due to having official Le Mans and the LMP2/GTE cars, but the issues with the AI (cars crashing too much, faster cars getting stuck behind slower classes, etc) really detracts from having a good experience with it.

AC is missing too many features, like timed races, rolling starts, multiclass support and the AI is also not good. Some of the mods, like LMP2, are low quality.

I haven't really spent too much time with PC2 and maybe I should try it to see how Le Mans goes with it, but unfortunately I have the impression that its AI is also underwhelming.

It would be interesting to have Le Mans with R3E or AMS2 which is where I have fun in singleplayer, but it will probably never happen.

We're running a 1 hour 24 minute ;) Gt3 race at Le Mans this saturday night in AC. All premium members are welcome

I did my own weird fantasy version of LeMans in AC some time ago. It was 2 hours long (with time acceleration) and It had in-game LMP1s with VRC's Prototypes, GTE cars (including URD's), and even RSS GT1 cars.

It was quite epic, but I did very poorly + I was playing on a gamepad (I still play a lot on a gamepad when I'm too lazy to set up my G29), still quite an experience though. I was surprised to see that the old LMPs were doing quite well against the modern LMPs. From what I've noticed the old cars were slower in the corners but they were gaining on the straights. Also, AC's AI can deal suprisingly well with multiclass sometimes though it's definitely far from perfect in many aspects. I still get that weird bug where one of the drivers drives into the pit wall at the start.

Sure, it's difficult to make exact replica of actual LeMans but to me it doesn't have to be all real to be honest, the experience is still there. The issue with AC's AI though is that it doesn't seem to pit for tyres, only for fuel and AI strategies are quite random sometimes. I always run Practice and Qualifying before long races which seems to help the AI a bit though.

Too bad that the rFactor 2's LeMans track doesn't work in VR with the Reverb G2 + 3080, major lag spikes (GPU related) which studio 397 refuses to fix...
