rFactor 2 Update Brings Significant Improvements to Loading Times

rFactor 2 Load Times Update 00.jpg
Studio 397 released an update last week for rFactor 2 that addressed a long-standing issue for the sim: loading times.

Build 1.1126 of rFactor 2 became available on Steam last week, and though the update was small and didn't garner very many headlines, the impressive changes to the loading times are worth discussing.

In recent years two of the more common shortcomings players complained about in rFactor 2 were the dated graphics and the slow load times. The former was a focus for improvement for the Studio 397 team through 2020, and the latter has now been addressed in the most recent build.

In testing, my own load times on my AMD 3900X and 6800 XT based system were reduced by roughly half versus the outgoing build. Loading a new AI race session at the Nurburgring Nordschleife used to cost me close to five minutes, but that time is now under two minutes for me. Loading a single car practice session at Lime Rock Park went from close to two minutes to under one minute. This still lands rFactor 2 at the higher end of loading times for racing sims, but it's now far closer to its competitors. These values will be different for each player, but if you're like me and held back on playing the title because of the long wait times, give this latest update a try.

Here is an excerpt from the 1.1126 changelog regarding load times:

Game Loading
  • Optimizations to Game Loading and Series switching.
  • Optimizations to Texture Loading.
  • Added the ability to load cached track files from the component to improve loading times.
  • Improved shader loading and added pre-built shader cache to improve loading times.

So well done to Studio 397 on these changes. Testing the improved load times allowed me to reconnect with a sim I love. The improved load times allowed me to enter the sessions in a more positive mindset, and reminded me of the pure joy I get from racing in rFactor 2.

Let us know your thoughts on the improvements to rF2 in the comments below.

Thanks for the tip.

Yesterday it worked when I did the fourth step, deleting the entire USERDATA folder
Next time don't delete it, save it as there you will have your setups and in case you do off-line racing, the AI talent files built with the learning.

Rf2 people like to mention this every chance they get. If you don't like something just go away. With this attitude even this loading times issue would have never been touched. Feedback about what is bad about a sim is the only way to make the sim better. On the other hand telling people to go away instead of providing feedback about their issues will cause the game to stagnate and die. Rf2 has issues just like all sims. Sometimes an issue is something missing altogether, sometimes something works poorly in various ways, sometimes something doesn't work. Issues need to be fixed and one of the most serious issues with rf2 is its elitist and denialist userbase which manifests itself in posts like above.
Constructive criticism is one thing, coming here to say that "I've uninstalled it months ago" and then go about trolling for pages and pages is another.

I would love to give this Sim a chance, but I gave up, to complicated (for me) to bring my simucube 2 pro and Heusinkveld Ultimates to connect with it.

A userfriendly hardware set up would made this Sim so much better…

So long I will stay at iRacing, AC, ACC and Dirt 2.0

AMS1 received a "blue flag" update that was a step above rF1 & GTR2 that solved most of the drafting cars... in my play, I did not see any that got stuck.
AMS 1 did receive that update, true. BUT. A step above the original rFactor and GTR 2? Yes. Good enough for single class series like F1 (where the cars are quite close in performance) and lapped cars? Possibly. Good enough for multiclass racing, based on my testing (for example) riding along in replay with Boxer Cup AI navigating AI Marcas traffic at Interlagos? Not at all. Try it for yourself – very weird behaviour at times. AI ends up losing much more time than the player navigating traffic, especially due to unnatural, unnecessary hesitations in a straight line.

Even RaceRoom does better in multiclass, actually, although the top class AI bullies the lower classes aggressively through corners and on corner exit like it's touring cars.

I also believe the AMS 1 blue flag update means lapped cars sometimes brake to get out of the way, which is highly undesirable in some settings e.g. CART Extreme leaders lapping cars on short ovals.

Whereas rF2 has AI (with first-party content, anyway) that is better in a multiclass setting in navigating traffic. Perfect? No. But from what I've seen, it appears more tolerable (in terms of balance between time efficiency and safety) than any other game I've seen at navigating traffic.

The slipstream issue could be fixed with NOTEPAD by editing one single line in AIW file but guess what? You can't edit official tracks (encrypted) and they don't want to fix anything for offline users. Sometimes the destruction of single player mode seems to be intentional.
AIDraftStickiness, I'm guessing you're referring to? Does it solve the issue? In my testing with earlier gMotor sims like GTR 2 and AMS 1, I've never had consistently better results regarding proper slipstreaming behaviour by having that value at 1, 4, or something else. Perhaps this tweak actually works with rF2, though. What's been your experience?

To be fair to v4 they specifically referred to the vitriol in posts, which you can see from this thread alone, is very often over the top and unnecessary. Constructive criticism should be encouraged, but some of the comments on here are just plain trolling.

Edit: Sorry, just seen v4's response which basically says the same thing.

I've given up on rf2. Every few weeks, my installation destroys itself and I have to configure my settings all over again. It tries to download gigabytes of mods every start. Unsubscribing in Steam doesn't help. Oh, and I hate the extremely confusing GUI.

I'm wondering if the old UI might give you a stable setup perhaps? I stayed on the old UI, after having reliability issues when I initially tried to upgrade, so I reverted back. My setup has been rock solid with the old UI for almost two years now, and I find the old UI to be much more easier to use. A big plus for me also is that it is easy to setup your own dedicated server which I use when racing among a group of friends.

One other advantage of the old UI is that there also exists a very good guide for it on how to set everything up:

See my post down below in case it helps. I run a Bodnar SimSteering2 and Heusinkveld Sprints in my rig. It was straightforward to setup using the old UI and has been stable ever since for almost two years, so I'm wondering if the issues you are encountering could be due to the new UI perhaps.

Thanks for your answer.

My problem is not the settings themselves, but that the game resets itself every few days or weeks, without my intervention. It then starts with some sort of setup wizard, which also comes back after I have set up everything correctly. An endless loop.

Then there is the problem with the mod downloads. I actually only need one track and one car, but the game still tries to download all the mods I have ever subscribed to. I have already unsubscribed all content in Steam but every time I start the game it wants to download hundreds of gigabytes again. Besides the mods, it also downloads "recommended" content that I have no interest in. I can't block those downloads.

All of this even happened after a fresh windows installation on a new PC.

This is too stupid for me, with all other games I don't have such problems.

First yes rF2 can be infuriating lol

There are only a few reasons it would do this every few days weeks ...

1. You uninstalled rF2 and re-installed

No difference to any steam sim you uninstall folder is gone and anything you downloaded ?

You uninstall Anthem that is 100GB you reinstall you must download another 100GB ?

In this regard rF2 has PRO yes you get to decide what to uninstall and install what content you want ! No other sim lets you do this ? which one ? so be fair dinkum !

2. You remove or delete certain files in rF2 install , so you verify files and it redownloads everything !

YES so don't do it ! NEVER !

3. You delete your user

Bad move no matter which way you slice it don't do it EVER !

TIP #1 yes the going through that re-setup is painful
You can esc through all the controller settings and do them later
Now next it makes you select one of 3 mod collections
My advice find the one you like ie: more or less content then NEVER delete or remove that specific content .. so any time you have to re- select it will finish in a few seconds downloading nothing

But right you should not put yourself in that position to start

TIP #2 make 5kb room mods.
I use room mods for 2 reasons
1. You can use them to join your own server and play offline why ? because whilst you do not leave the garage you can drive every car in mod ...without reloading the track you get it ? NO OTHER SIM can do that .... another plus for ISI.
It also means you can set race grids exactly how you want every skin every grid spot ;)

2. I have 20 5kb rfmods that contain every car and track I subscribe
None of that content can be uninstall or removed as long as those rfmods are in packages, so they can be uninstalled and still not removed

TIP #3 .. When all else fails it can happen to the best of 'em ;)

As soon as it starts to download second package kill your internet connection and close rF2
Put internet back on
Stay in Steam go to workshop, scroll down and click on "see all 773 items"
Now go back to top and click on "BROWSE" then click "Subscribed Items "
Now you will be greeted by a list contains only the content you have subscribed ( at that moment )
Select 30 items a page, that gives me 7 pages to do so I must have between 180 - 210 mods but whos counting

NOW all you need to do is click on each tab subscribe or unsubscribe you can do it very fast trust me should take no more then 2 MINUTES !

It is also a good way to see all your content quickly

If you had used the main workshop page to do the same thing it would take you forever clicking new page unsubscribe go back do it all again

so there are lots of ways around it

No no I won't lol

People get me complaining, " I have to download x amount of GB's "

Hello Australia in all other sims you must install everything always ! ?
so what is the next excuse " Oh rF2 by each content is larger file size but you don't mind downloading any other game 100GB + geee very picky

I sorry okay but I fail to see how rF2 is not better as it gives me ability to remove stuff I don't want

I pretty sure if you check those 3 collections each would only have around the same size as other sims have ? No ?

6 CLICKS FAST AS YOU CAN takes me 1 second each I guess
so 183 mods I have 183 seconds oh say 4 minutes to unsubscribe " everything"

BIT BETTER THEN DOWNLOADING 100 GB ! lol WOULD YOU SAY YES / NO / UNDECIDED

just save downloading x GBs in 6 seconds.jpg

Except for DLC. Those were forced to be installed last time I used rF2. Pretty cool when some of your DLC is still not updated for the new UI (Reiza).

Furthermore, when you reinstall, it auto subscribes to all official content even if you manually unsubscribed before. Not everybody has unlimited data and fast internet. So if it gives me the ability to customize, it shouldn't override it. And then comes the loooong unpacking before you can unsubscribe.

And using this unpacking method, in addition of being slow as, ehmm, you have the same data twice, once in .rfcmp, once unpacked. If you delete the .rfcmp from your disk it deletes the content from the install as well. Sure you don't have to redownload in the case of a reinstall... but if you reinstall it auto subscribes back the official content you didn't want previously so no time is really gained.

Sorry if I am wrong about something, this is my experience from several tries with rF2. Next try will come with an AI update.

DLC work same as they do for any sim ?

Still as I said above use rfmods allows you to keep as many versions of each DLC or workshop car as you want
Every other sim deletes old versions of cars which ever way you want to twist it rF2 gives you more option.
This allows you to directly test 2 versions of the same car or track just by making 2 5kb mods in a minute
AS long as the rfmods remain intact in packages old versions of any cars will stay installed till you are finished with them EXAMPLE you may have a online room half way through a practice week and don;t want to use updated car in rF2 you not forced to all others sims you are

Workshop ..see you insist on saying installing everything when I just showed you it takes minutes
to unsubscribe what you want then restart rF2 and it will only download what you have subscribed ?

lol still don't get it

1. Don't make silly m mistakes I have outlined above what NOT to do
2. You don't have to re-download all content if you follow my instruction
3. Takes 5 minutes to unsubscribe all or some content as you see fit
Again rF2 gives you the choice other sims give you squat

If rF2 as a platform that leans towards customizing installs, they should let the users choose which DLC should be installed. DLC also has "subscription" option that rF2 overrides. There were workarounds before the new UI that don't work anymore.

I tried during installation that I quit and unsubscribed from stuff I didn't want and the whole thing broke, didn't want to install. I had to revert to an old UI build then. It could be different now. But from my experience it's not that easy always.

1. The whole design is silly, having to search on support forums how to do simple things.
2. Unless it breaks.
3. In AC, iR you can also choose what you want by the way.

No problem, I feel like I've seen issues like this poping up on the forums only after they switched to the new UI, which also contains a lot of new features (and so new bugs as well). I've never seen any kind of setup wizard using the old UI and it never downloads mods I don't want, which is why I'm thinking this could be a new UI only issue, since I seem to see people posting issues like this only after they switched to the new UI.

If you want to give it another try, I also play AC, ACC, and iRacing and have done a fair amount of track days in real life and the handling seems the most realistic to me, especially when driving at the limit. I play other sims primarily only for the ease of quick online play. I think if you give the old UI a try all of these issues you are having may just go away.
