RaceRoom To Introduce New Tyre Model in Q4 2023?

RaceRoom New Tyre Model 2023.jpg
KW Studios is looking to revitalise RaceRoom. A new tyre model should see the sim head into 2024 with positive momentum.

RaceRoom‘s tyre model has been the sim’s sticking point for many years, despite a generally good physics model. The lack of complex detail of the tyre gripping the tarmac was always a criticism from many sim racers. However, the future is looking bright.

A reworked tyre model alongside more accurate Force Feedback sliders for less complex wheelbases is incoming for RaceRoom. The addition of the Circuit de Pau-Ville Grand Prix track alongside a Touring Car DLC pack is also due for release very soon for RaceRoom.

RaceRoom’s New Tyre Model

During the 2023 SimRacing Expo in Germany, RaceRoom‘s new tyre model was on offer for testing. Our friend GamerMuscle was lucky enough to try out the new physics and chat with RaceRoom’s physics programmer Thomas Jansen. Check out his video below.

At the beginning of the test, the tyres were being masked by incorrect settings and once that was altered, the new physics really shone through.

A comprehensive overhaul using real-world tyre data will come to RaceRoom. Previous aspects of the tyre behaviour had been mathematically estimated. This created an inconsistent and vague experience for the driver a lot of the time. Now, the accuracy of real-world tyre data should be a total game-changer for RaceRoom.

No exact date for the release of the tyre model has been given yet. Could it be added to RaceRoom before the end of 2023? Time will tell.

New Content

Back in May, OverTake released an article detailing the schedule for RaceRoom updates. The next update in the games calendar is the tyre model rework and the addition of the Circuit de Pau-Ville Grand Prix track. This will be the first time the track will have featured in a racing game title since Race07.

ETCR raced at Pau this year with great success. It is more than likely that KW Studios would want to capitalise on their partnership with the TCR series to bring the cars to the touring car heaven of RaceRoom. The Touring Car Pack and the track should release in October, according to RaceRoom's road map. As a result, sim racers should keep their eyes peeled in the upcoming days.

Are you looking forward to the RaceRoom update? Maybe you will be trying the sim out for the first time? Let us know how you get on on Twitter @Overtake_gg or in the comments below!

"We spent a few months on just gathering data researching... picking apart our tyre model, how it's working with all the numbers we put into it, and just filling up those last few holes that we have kind of guess."

Doesn't sound like they are really changing the tyre model rather than just putting in slightly more precise data into it. It has been mentioned to me by people who worked on pMotor 2.0 extensively is that the basic tyre models in rF1, AMS1, and RaceRoom are very similar and the main differences are in the numbers they feed into the model. Maybe RaceRoom can achieve the well-loved feel of AMS1 one day...

Nice upgrade...no really what the community really asked for but still nice update. Let's call the guy Jack...Just make it something like 2.5$ per month for all access. This way Raceroom will get 2.5 $ per month from Jack , 30$ in 12 months. With the actual pricing and content release model Jack only buy around 5$ per year of DLC as there are no so much DLC per year and from those few releases there are only few cars interesting Jack.

To be fair, this is what they all call "new tyre models". It's usually always just new and better data plugged into existing tyre mdoels.

Rarely do you get the new physics like more contact patches, tyre flex, brake caliper heat sources, gyroscopic effect, etc. that would require changing the actual model and not just the data plugged into it.

AC, ACC, iRacing, rF2 you could probably count on one hand the number of times they've changed something at that level and not just better data.

How about updating those ancient DX5 graphics soon? Or at least share plans on when that will happen...the game is not optimize to run on VR.

I would only be okay with a new graphics engine, provided it doesn't force the use of modern AA solutions. I actually prefer the clean look of RaceRoom with MSAA over sims like ACC, which are often plagued by blurry visuals and unsightly ghosting.

The physics are already damn near perfect IMHO. I actually own a 944 Turbo and the 944 Cup Car is *very* similar to how my IRL car drives. I'm worried they'll screw it up.
Exactly my thoughts - I love the physics and feel, even on my G29. It's this and the awesome AI that make Raceroom stand above the other racing titles, well for me anyway. If they ruin anything then I frankly wouldn't know which sim to turn to afterwards.

It won't even run in VR for me, my headset is too high res. If they fixed that I'd play it....but I don't think they have the resources for a new engine.

Unfortunately as long as they keep on using this graphics engine people will skip the sim; that's the harsh truth
Apologies if I'm a cracked record, but I normally answer these comments with a plug for my Raceroom Remastered Reshade mod. I released an update just the other day (V4.1) which although will obviously never magically transform the game into modern graphics territory, my mod still adds a nice boost in visual quality, so their ageing engine is no longer a distraction and you can just have fun. If anyone's interested - the V4 video is the best quick demonstration of the mod while the V4.1 video (towards the start) shows some significant improvements / fixes.

Then I hope the RaceRoom guys are ready for a steady stream of WAILING & GNASHING once the tire is released....almost every time other sims have 'improved' their tire, the people who have spent 1000's of hours on the old tire start screaming the cars are now ruined.

They could finally fix the damn track limits detection. Currently it penalizes the player for driving a racing line the same as real life drivers do (for example at the Nurburgring). Makes the game very annoying to play.

Yes this also..just gave RRE a go today, the graphic is too old but can be tolerated for few minutes... sound, handling and physic were great but the track limit which is too strict is making the experience awful. It's the only sim that stops lap timer and cockpit/simhub dashboard lap timer when out of track. We still need those laptimes even if we went off track.

Stuff people are okay with in RR: tyre model, cars and tracks selection.
Stuff people need in RR: graphics engine that uses more than 1 core, dynamic time & weather, correct track limits, darkmode UI, not hiding invalid laps.
Guess what RR is adding and working on...

@Andrew_WOT What was so funny about my post? I've spent a lot of time working hard on my mod and shared it to the community in the hopes others would benefit from and like it. Laughing at me in return doesn't seem like a nice response, to put it way more polite than I mean it.

Raceroom is the best game feeling with my simucube 2, so real, so close to reality, nice to hear that, it can only be better.
But I wonder if better graphics is not better...

Just went back to RRE after many months of AMS2 and RF2. The tire feedback did feel "weak" or simple, I thought. An update would be very good. I can live with the graphics.

They already shared the plans few months ago. The plan is to find a new graphics engine. Obviously no date because no engine has been chosen. Patience...

The physics are absolutely great but I fully feel the lack of progession in the loss of grip, especially with the GTO and 92 DtM cars. It easy to lose control and go into a spin without having felt I was at the limit, feeling pretty confident on the contrary. Thos is exactly what itbdescribed in the video, the on / off grip effect. It is less pronounced in other cars, ; I still can feel it in the powerful GT1 and GT2 cars but it is more manageable. It is the only flaw in the physics imo, the rest feels realmy natural.

Revisiting the FFB is a good idea, having simplified its setup just brought frustration to many users, some information have just disappeared. It is not that bad currently but, after having experienced the old FFB, solethkng is missing.

Good news then, and good to see Gamermuscle does something else than "AC is the best" videos.
