Porsche Offers Eye-Wateringly Expensive Limited Edition GT3 Cup Wheel

Sim racing manufacturers building equipment to be used in real cars is not unheard of in 2023. The reverse path is much rarer though - and Porsche decided to go down that route with an exclusive sim racing version of the 911 GT3 Cup car's steering wheel. Spoiler: It will likely not make its way to the average sim racer's setup.

An official Porsche product, the carbon-fiber based wheel is made "from the original 911 GT3 Cup steering wheel", according to the product listing in Porsche's web shop. This means that if you are going to mount the wheel to your rig, you get to enjoy the same feeling Porsche Cup drivers have when they climb into the bucket seats of their real cars.

The wheel comes with a spacer that "fits most common wheel bases", and the 12 buttons at the front (plus 2 at the back in addition to the shifter paddles) work via USB connection to your PC. The buttons are backlit, too, and can be activated by plugging them into a normal power outlet as well. Combined with the included stand, the 911 GT3 Cup can also serve as a decorative element of the motorsport connoisseur's home.

Deep Pockets Required

There is an enormous kicker, though: For one, the wheel is limited to just 150 units - but that does not mean that it will be sold out in no time. Its price will prevent that from happening, as the 911 GT3 Cup wheel will set you back a whopping 7,911€/£7,950/10,475$. Yes, that is the sound of our collective wallets screaming in agony at these numbers that you are hearing.

Of course, this wheel is not aimed at the average sim racer, but rather Porsche enthusiasts with deep pockets or "cup drivers or teams who want to improve their performance on the road." Of course, simulator work is becoming more and more important in real racing even for customer teams in lower-tier series, so some teams could grab one of the wheels to make their simulator as accurate as possible. Or just display them in a nice cabinet, showing off the backlit buttons.

One question...why? Its not really appealing to anyone other than Porsche fans with very deep pockets. It has nothing that a wheel for a tenths of that price cant do. I just dont see the purpose other than showing off...in whatever direction that may be.

Ah, here in Australia, that's around $15,600. Plus "we have to ship it via space" (or something) shipping costs - so I'm going with a $16k wheel.

LOL, no.

I just checked my invoice. The multifunction steering wheel upgrade in my real car just added 249€ to the balance. And yes, that included an R badge and shift paddles.

I don't get why people here is so critic to the price of that wheel, it cost almost half of what a nvidia graphics card will cost next year.

Well, the nonsense comes from afar, they have not invented anything new: take a look at what has been paid for this "work of art"...

My immediate thoughts were that the neighbour's dog took a good bite of the wheel :roflmao:

Speaking enthusiastic manufacturers, I'm still waiting for Thrustmaster coming up with their 250GTO wheel in 1:1 size, every details (and likely with patina) instead of their 80%'er look-alike model.
I mean, now they're even playing with DD
Besides my T300RS-GT strangely go way beyond 3.9Nm torque description for some GTR2 PnG classic car-track combos, so 100% diameter will finely do with my just above entry level hardware.
Sorry, just a side note.

I would have bought this wheel but it's just not expensive enough.

I guarantee these will sell out pretty quickly. A sim racing wheel of a real wheel, sitting on a bench doing nothing is the perfect display of wealth for the kind of car enthusiast that likes to collect cars just so that poorer people can't have them.

At that price I'd like them to collate their justifications for the price, put it into an excel sheet, print it on high GSM paper, douse it in olive oil, and shove it up their ass.

That wheel costs 7 times more than my current setup, even if I had the money I would rather upgrade my Pc and buy some sim racing stuff from Moza or Fanatec.

What's the name of that Richard Pryor movie, where he took a bet to spend a ton of money in order to recieve a whole lot more money? From what I remember he couldn't spend it all on one thing or give it away, he had to spend it.

If that were to happen to me, I'd buy...

I looked it up. Brewster's Millions.
