Opinion: DiRT Rally 3.0 Will Come, Just Not Named DiRT Rally

07.jpg
DiRT Rally 3.0 is the next expected title in the realistic rally simulation niche by Codemasters. Or should I say was? How likely is the next title part of the DiRT franchise? Or will DiRT be the next franchise to bite the dust at EA's hands?

Let me start with: there will definitely be a successor to DiRT Rally 2.0. The only question is how it will be named.

Now why that sentiment? Codemasters' DiRT Rally team surely has been working tirelessly on the successor to the franchise. After all, the previous titles have been commercial successes, so why would they pull the plug?

However, since EA and Codemasters managed to secure the WRC license, previously held by Nacon and KT Racing, there is a possibility the next title will just be called something like "WRC". This decision would make sense from a business point of view. Marketing a racing title with the official name of the IRL series is way simpler and opens the game up to a larger audience.

So whatever the team behind the previous DiRT Rally games already did, what will that be used for?

Probably a title called either a combination of the "DiRT Rally" and "WRC" names or just "WRC". So let's brainstorm a bit:
  • DiRT Rally: The Official WRC Game
  • DiRT WRC
  • WRC 2023 (oh no)
One thing I hope we can all agree on is that EA and Codemasters will not be running 2 realistic rally simulation series next to each other. Another thing we hopefully can all agree on is that EA shouldn't throw another yearly series at us.

Unfortunately, just while writing this, I remembered we are talking about EA, whose sports department is heavily invested in the yearly formula and Codemasters, who already have the F1 series.

On the one hand, I am dreading what is coming up for the rally game niche. On the other hand, there is still Richard Burns Rally. Probably still my favourite rally sim to this day.

So, look into your crystal ball and tell us: What do you think, or hope, will happen to Codemasters and the WRC license? Let us know in the comments down below!

WRC is a brand and there is another publisher who owns the rights. Normally, such rights are very expensive but exclusive. And I'm convinced an EA Rally game would be garbage. Codemasters is anyway overrated. Project Car is rubbish, F1, no thanks. CM2 is playable ok, but also not perfect. Sadly no good rally game around.

It will not have "Dirt" in the title.
DiRT franchise as a whole has been internally cancelled at EA.

I'd expect it to be called WRC 2023. I'd be surprised if they included the Dirt name for an official WRC game.

I assume they'll make it easier to play. From EA's perspective they'd want more mass market appeal and it would make sense to increase overall sales. Would be a real shame if that happened and the Dirt Rally series is killed off.

Having been on the beta team for Dirt Rally and getting my suggestion of clutch with sequential into the game, Dirt Rally 2.0 was a hit and miss but only because of the errors in coding for the spectators etc. Really hanging out for anything close to DR2!

At this point in time I honestly couldn't care less what it will be called or when it will be released as I already have more games then I can probably play in my life.

So it would have to be one heck of a game for me to put money into it. From EA ? Probably slim chance of that happening.

They already said that this will be more than just a WRC game. Which obviously means that it will be like Dirt Rally. I expect a Dirt Rally experience, but based on the WRC championship, or a career leading up to it. If that's the case, we're not losing the Dirt Rally experience.

My money for the title is on WRC '23. Fits well with F1 and Fifa naming convention they have going.
I'm actually worried to see what will become of the Dirt series, and Codemasters, too for that matter. EA is not even supposed to be a major player on the field by now. The way I see it EA Sports and Apex Legends are carrying the whole company, because they haven't made a memorable game in ages that would actually worth money.(except maybe Jedi: Fallen Order, haven't played it yet) They just keep buying studios, starting projects, then cancelling them before they even reach alpha build, then shutting the studio down. Also sitting on IP's and not doing anything with them. Every now and then a game gets through the cracks, and it's usually plagued by bad corporate decisions: Frostbite engine forced in every title (NFS, Anthem), microtransactions/lootboxes (BF, Fifa), bugs or downright broken or downgraded game(BF2042).
Now the question is wether EA will let Codemasters use Dirt Rally as their base, and build a WRC game on it to be a sim (cade), or will they be the "Evil Corporation" and take full control of the the direction or the technical side of the game. I'm thinking about a decision here to force the Madness Engine or God forbid, the Frostbite on the team, who has no previous experience with it, and make them deliver something in a 2 years dev cycle. Hopefully EA is not this stupid and they are aware what they just got their hands on with Codies. And again there is hope the game is already in a playable state, since rumors were that by the time Codies announced the WRC licence, Dirt Rally 3 was already in development. Although Project CARS 4 was canned while also in mid development, but I'll put that on SMS's tab.
Another thing I'm curious about, is the historic content. I think that was always the strong side of Dirt Rally anyway, driving those beasts were always a joy. And let's face it, the game will need more content, WRC at the moment runs the 3 Hybrid cars, 5 different R5 machines and the Rally 4 Fiesta as the junior category, and that's it as far as I know. WRC by Kylotonn had some historic stuff, the Anniversary mode was also a nice touch, but it was really one car from each era/season, and they weren't that much fun to drive anyway. I would love to see them include all of the cars even if it's from only one given season, be it 1985 or 2002 or whatever.
Those are my thoughts on the matter, sorry for the wall of text.

I doubt it will be good too. The release of Dirt Rally 2.0 was one of the worst I've ever experienced: Missing features, non-existent FFB, bugs, etc etc. Lots of the bugs were patched 9 months later! Then that DLC-policy... It still has severe bugs like lighting popping, texture popping, and all that. Drive Poland as an example. Dirt Rally 1 was a much better game. Dirt Rally 2.0 felt like a quick cash grab that was released way too soon as well.

This new Codies will never see a penny from me anymore. Wish them all the best.

EA will turn whatever remains of Dirt Rally 3 into a yearly series that they can milk. It will be good at the start, then it goes downhill cause they decided to slap a new skin on it every year.

Yearly releases isn't Codemasters' forte so I foresee EA strong-arming them into a heavily monetized live service model

Might not be their forte, but between LMA Manager, IndyCar Series and F1. It's really only been a couple years since 1999 they haven't had a yearly franchise going!

It's EA...

I expect Dirt Rally 2.0 to be the final decent title of Codemasters work... Much like many still mod and play F1 2020 or F1 2014, DR2.0 or RBR will continue to be people's go to Rally sims...

EA will milk everything they can out of it... There is little doubt in my mind that the work on DR3 will be put into a yearly release cycle with occasional bug fixes but a heavy focus on new UI and new content... And of course a heavy focus on microtransactions...

Dirt Rally 3.0 = WRC 23. There won't be a Dirt Rally 3.0 other then that.

Let's hope that it's as good as Dirt Rally 2 at least and that they focus on great physics including tarmac and a similair engine with good VR support+motion+FFB and that they don't go the arcade-way as EA usually does. And not a disaster of a VR implementation as F1 2022, then it won't be playable.

I'm less worried about what it'll be called and more about what it will drive like. The fact that they killed off the arcade counterpart (DiRT) makes me think the next WRC (spiritually Dirt Rally 3.0) will be a mix of arcade and sim instead of focusing on the latter.

I really hope they'll make use of the madness engine's dirt physics, and not the EGO engine's one.

WRC Generations is really a great game, I don't feel like playing another dirt: rally with horrible stages and the same old phyisics and FFB, I didn't even play DR2 for more than 5 hours, while I already got 10+ in WRC:G.
I thought Dirt Rally 2.0's dirt physics were the best out there? If anything I hope they continue to improve on the tarmac physics as they were the weak point in both Dirt Rally 1 and 2.0.

Well it will be nothing more than a simcade at best and in my eyes a simcade is just arcade and every Dirt title has center pivot car physics and that's just wrong! But i guess it can't be any worse than KT Racing release buggy games that don't even deserve to be called Beta's! I don't know what to think except EA has a bad reputation of ruining everything they touch...For me i think it will be i buy it and 45 minutes later i refund it! RBR tho is for ever.
