Interview: Reiza's Simioni on Automobilista v1.5, Upcoming Features & Development Processes

Automobilista 2 Renato Simioni Interview Mitsubishi Lancer RX.png
Automobilista 2 is getting the long-awaited v1.5 update very soon, promising to take another big step forward - "possibly the biggest we have taken so far", says Renato Simioni, the founder of developer Reiza Studios. RaceDepartment has sat down with the AMS2 Lead Developer to chat about the new update, the past and what is still to come. Read Renato's thoughts on...

...Multiplayer Improvements

"We have had some progress with multiplayer elements. We do regular multiplayer tests, but they are always in a controlled environment, with mostly the same people and on a server we know is reliable, so they tend to be better than what they average experience can be for other users. So we will not know how much of an impact they have until the update is out.

We have made some adjustments to the netcode prediction, and it is looking better during our tests. We can confidently say that it is a good improvement. I would not go as far as saying that we have everything at the level of the best sims in terms of multiplayer, but it’s a good step up.

We have some more options as well, such as the one to auto advance the session, which was a common complaint – people would often get stuck as the server was not advancing the session. Now, there is a mechanism that will automatically do that.

The chatbox will now be present in the results screen – this and other such quality-of-life improvements are part of the update. There is more we were working on for this release, like the extension of voting options, but they will not make it in time for v1.5. They are expected for the next update in a month or two.”

Installing and maintaining mods in Automobilista 2 will be less cumbersome once update v1.5 is released - and even more possibilities are on the horizon.

...Improved Modding Support

"It used to be really cumbersome as the engine was not really designed for modding. We are working on lifting some restrictions and limitations. The most important one was that you don’t have to install everything again with every update nor mess with bootfiles as there are dedicated user vehicle lists and driveline records – that’s already taken care of for 1.5, with some more resources planned for making car modding easier. Unfortunately for tracks we don’t foresee support being possible anytime soon.”

...Community Requests

"There were four fronts people have been pointing out as the main areas in need of an upgrade, and these are the ones that we ended up focusing on for 1.5.
The Multiplayer, modding support, physics – I think we have a really big step up, I am really happy with what we have got now – and the fourth factor is AI.
The AI still has some issues, even with the updates we’re making now, but it’s another big improvement in terms of AI calibration both in dry and we weather, so you can keep things more consistent going from class to class and from track to track.
Up until recently, we were always chasing moving goal posts, because the physics were changing all the time. We didn’t have a consistent base to calibrate against, because you would change things, then the physics would change, and everything would be out of whack again with the AI.

We are in the process of redoing the AI lines for about 30 track layouts. There is more consistency for most classes, also with weather. Some series were good when it was dry, then it started to rain and they were too fast or too slow relative to the player. It ensures you get a quality race with every combination of car and track you pick, and whatever your skill level is.

More are to come, as we are talking about over 200 layouts and over 70 classes of cars in dry and wet weather, so the number of combinations is high. It is going to be a much higher standard of consistency, also for pit stops and tire strategy.

We also have spotter support. It is using the native assistant from Project CARS 2, but with our own voice material. It is not a full engineer, just a spotter, but it is already good value for having a native spotter system for oval racing, and even for Rallycross, it is important."

So there's nothing to do, that's a good solution, let's stay with the sims.like they are and forget other sims have been able to simulate AIs (not using AI in real time) without those issues. Ambirious games call ambitious works, and AI is part of a simulation, so every combo has to be worked on. Of not, that's just a huge mistake in terms.of project management and product quality. We can't, as customers, accept that anymore.

A good solution is to turn off the simulation elements that make driving interesting?

Nah...

In this day and age I'm fully willing to accept a poor AI experience and as long as the physics simulation gets more and more advanced I'll expect it... As iRacing, ACC, rF2 and AC have shown... It's not an essential part of the experience for a sim racing title to be successful...

Multiplayer on the other hand is... Without it a development team can't develop the rest of the features to be ready to even think about working on the AI as the rest of the feedback required just comes from a canned time trial experience...

Rennsport at least got that part of the equation right... With a heavy focus on MP and no AI in sight yet...

Regarding mods for this Sim, I saw that there is now a Content Manager with
a graphical Interface... and apparently there are even tracks mods. Never tried
any. Question is, where do these cars and tracks come from? all from PC2?

I don't know if I will ever bother with these, AMS 2 has already lots and lots of
cars and tracks, and maybe the quality of these mods are not good enough
to care...

All the tracks are PC2 "conversions", many of the cars are too but there are some scratch-built mod cars (tyres are usually taken from Reiza cars).

It's actually Good. Not perfect, but the physics changes are working as intended. I even smiled while playing it today.

There are people on the internet who are delusional, narcissisitcs, have low IQ, or have combination of all those conditions.
I think that all they want is other people attention and since it's easier to say something dumb and negative than smart and positive those people are mostly saying dumb and negative things. Also saying negative dumb things is putting them on the spotlight - and that's what they want.

Be smart - Dont feed trolls.
And there's those who feel superior than any other for unknown and unjustified reasons.

I like this game now. It's pretty good. Cars are fun to drive. Now if someone would share their graphics settings so the guardrails and fences don't shimmer and flicker like a drunk chick on New Years Eve...that would be great. Thanks!

After 1.5 you can turn TC off with GT cars, full throttle and wheels do not slip at acceleration.
I really liked the game, now it´s just too boring.
Hope they fix it at future releases!

I have doubts about that as I've watched a stream video of seasoned sim racers (including a sim racing coach) who were doing some races online, having disabled, not on purpose, all aids, including TC, in their GT3 race and they were all complaining and struggling with their cars (by the way, these simracers have never been convinced about AMS2 realism, so quiet negatively not biased at worst, not biased at best). I'll sure try that myself, but reading your statement and watching several people proving the contrary is quiet... confusing...

Just try Porche GTE, set TC to 1 and see how traction leds flash at every tight corner exit when press throttle to max...however no loose of grip.
Set TC to 0, leds do not flash at all however same amount of grip, no loose of grip.
No matter slicks or hard tires.

Earlier it was like other sims (ACC, iRacing etc) that you really need to adjust TC and ABS also while race and be careful with gas pedal and also brake.
There is just way too much longitudinal grip after 1.5 patch.

Played AMS2 a lot but maby I just imagine

Interesting.

I decided to run a few races last night in the Maclaren.

Just jumped back onto the same track with the same car, turned off TC.

It drove just as it did with the TC on 5.

Floored it out of every corner, didn't manage to break the arse end out unless the corner came back on itself and the centrifugal forces took over.

This guy explain problems with new physics:

The oscillating issue that video points out is in GTE cars too (which I mainly drive). It was super noticeable and quite jarring, and I only downloaded the update last night and drove 20 minutes. Basically, everything he mentioned in the video i noticed on GTE cars with only 20 minutes of driving, including the drifting issue.

How people are claiming this is the one update to rule them all is beyond me. It seems to have solved a problem nobody really noticed while creating 5 new ones that are jarringly noticeable.

I've mentioned them too, those are narcissisitcs people.

Thb, the day after writing this comment I tought to my self "Didn't I just descriebed myself" :)

I was angry that day, what I wrote wasn't fair.

1.5 made it a bit less PC2, but i still feel like i'm driving an advanced PC2. It's not a game changer in any way shape or form, it's more of a step in the right-ish direction. I'm Brazilian i wanna like AMS 2 but it's not possible for me when I have AMS1, AC and ACC with a way more rewarding driving feel. And in case of AC and AMS1 way better mod support.

I have faith, tho. I really hope AMS2 become a worthy successor to AMS1. in all aspects, not just graphics and weather.
