Have Your Say – What's Your Favourite Piece of Sim Gear Right Now?

P. Winkler Simracing Rig.JPG
This week’s “Have Your Say’ article focuses on sim hardware; share your current favourite piece of sim racing gear in the comments below.

Sim racing can be an expensive hobby. It’s easy to pour a lot of your hard-earned money into new hardware. Sometimes those investments can be a let-down, while other times the product is all we’d hoped and more. We want to hear your stories from the latter case.

The right piece of gear can significantly enhance your enjoyment of sim racing. That enjoyment can be based on added immersion, more comfort while driving, or even something as simple as replacing a defective unit that was overdue for replacement. A favourite piece of sim gear doesn’t need to be expensive, of course. It could be something that you worked hard to be able to afford, something you inherited or received as a gift, or even something you found used.

Added immersion might be the most obvious reason to name something as your favourite piece of gear. This could be your first wheel, which meant a major step forward from a controller. Or a VR headset, which allows you to step into an alternate world where you’re piloting your favourite racecar. Or maybe a motion setup that allows you to feel every bump, curb, dip and crest.

Comfort is another great reason to love a sim hardware. Being hunched over a desk for endurance racing can be uncomfortable bordering on painful. And perhaps that new wheelstand or cockpit has opened up new possibilities in the world of sim racing for you.

Whatever it is, tell us in the comments below. Let us know which piece of sim hardware you love most, and why you love it.

The best upgrade I have made to the rig has to be tactile feedback. It started with a pair of mini-LFE's (to be listed in the coming days once I sort the pics ;)) and have since upgraded to 5x BK Concerts.

I cannot drive without it, that feeling and immersion it provides is incredible. They really have to be the best upgrade I have made.

Honourable mention for my Cube GTZero wheel though, this is the best wheel I have ever owned. Not just the quality but ergonomics as well. I used to be a Fanatec fanboy and had several rims with the Porsche Endurance one as my main, gave my wrists a nightmare but this Cube one I haven't had any wrist issues with since, superb!

30 buttons. The problem with VR will not be to differentiate between them, but to remember which function you assigned to each one of them.
Most of them don't get used for racing, or at least when I've got my VR headset on. But those that do (ABS, BBias, TC etc) are nicely separated out from the others and set out in a logical order so I hit the right one every time via muscle memory :D

There were some mishaps on the way though.... ;)

Well for me its a strange question because:

like a car needs an engine, a sim pc needs a wheel. Without a wheel all the other stuff is meaningless. (Ok except those guys driving with pads, or keyboard )

But a very special thing to me is my DX Racer gaming seat. I have no real sim-rig but sitting and racing on that seat is not worse than sitting in a proper race seat. I have fixed the chair legs additionaly and could`t not imagine race again on a common chair or couch or whatever ...

My home made monitor stand, which gets my 24 inch single monitor close to my eyes and eye-centred vertically. For monitor users, the importance of getting your view as close as possible to 1:1 world scale cannot be overstated in my view. Especially for road racers; less important for oval drivers, but still worth doing.

My sim gear is very basic, but that's the single most important improvement I have made. The effect on my driving performance, and especially consistency, has been massive.

Picked up this badboy fully assembled and delivered to my place....since I typically have very limited time at home when not on a business mission. Sad thing is that I just found out that I am being deployed again, thus it would seem that enjoying this badboy will have to wait & collect dust for some time until I get back....:(

My favourite is triples because they can be used for many other non simracing games unlike VR, racing wheel, pedals.

I have a pretty decent setup overall but the icing on the cake is my cheap-assed generic USB handbrake. Being a rally fanatic and all.

A few aha moments, in my SIM experience.
By order of magnitude it has been
VR
Load cell brake
Tactile
DD wheel.

Tell me about it. In may working life I've come to the conclusion that you can either have the money to acquire the toys, or you can have the time to use the toys, but not both.

A VR headset, my DIY pedalset and my old OSW. None of them are perfect but they deliver an amazing experience.

I'll receive a VKB NXT Premium soon. If it's worth the hype then it might become my overall favourite piece of sim gear. Although my trusty G27 has served me with zero hickups or problems for a solid decade now, so it is a good contender.

Can't seem to say the same about the new generations of G-wheels, but hopefully the new generations of NXT become better, not worse over time.
