Ever since the project kicked off early this year, Ian Bell and the Straight4 Studios team have pointed towards a December 2023 Early Access in WMD stage. Well, it is now December and those awaiting the development are none the wiser.

However, it does appear that GTRevival is getting close to a playable version. This morning, Ian Bell took to X to post a link to a short, unlisted YouTube video. The footage shows gameplay of GTRevival as “Physics Guru” Doug Arnao takes a Ferrari 296 GT3 for a spin around Interlagos.

GTRevival Early Gameplay Footage

A two-minute long video shows the S4S team member pounding laps around the circuit. A simplistic way of capturing the footage, the video is simply comes from behind the driver’s shoulder.

Whilst tricky to make out the smallest details, one does get a good view of the Ferrari’s interior as well as the in-game hud.

In his post, Bell admits that everything from physics to graphics are in an early stage of development. Furthermore, he points out that plenty of work will be made to the title. Additions will include head movement physics, audio tweaks and a whole lot more.

With that in mind, the title does already seem to feature in-depth audio. In fact, one can make out chassis and suspension creaking in this GTRevival gameplay video, akin to something one might hear in Assetto Corsa. Elsewhere, the graphics do look to be among those of modern sim racing titles.

As far as content goes, neither the Ferrari nor Interlagos are confirmed as being content in the final release. However, Ian Bell has previously pointed out to us that GT3 cars help the team to develop a physics engine comparable to other titles, also featuring the class. I guess some moving footage over a guys shoulder is better than nowt. But there's nothing here yet to make me think of investing money. PC1 & 2 was far from perfect. Bugs in the engine remained unfixed from 1 to 2. Hence I won't be getting enthusiastic just yet. First and foremost - marketing speak aside - Ian is a business man. His focus is to make as much money as possible.

We all know he can talk the talk. That'll possibly include another flawed offering when the game launches. If it's like PC1 & 2, with some cars handling nice, and others MEH, then having being burned before - I'll await YT sim commentators verdicts. These are my opinions, despite backing PCars from the beginning.

I installed GTR again, due to "rose-coloured glasses" syndrome, and wasn't blown away. Time will tell what Ian will offer this time around, and how consistent the game experience as a whole (gfx detail, sound, mechanical sim, tyre sim, weather, etc) will be nearer the time.

At this stage, despite seeing nothing - I'm more excited for vids/pics/dev blogs for AC2. From what they learned creating ACC, I think race and road cars will be on a different level from the stuff available at present.

Hopefully, both future titles for us all - will be the highest quality available when they release...

A another title that's going to be ruined because of the unreal engine: Non adjustable mirrors that won't move, anti aliasing blur/ghosting artifacts, shadow rendering issues, LoD issues, performance issues with VR.
Which titles were ruined by UE? ACC and EA WRC are the best looking titles for their genre.

I'm not disappointed or nonplussed, I'm 'OK, that was a video of a guy using a driving game/sim'
The reality to my uneducated brain is that of the video left 'untitled' could have been any one of the current crop of game/sims that are shown on yootoob.
But, I still have great (no, in fact greater) hopes for this sim being a re-imagined version of what made/makes me me play GTR2 as I have for the past decade and a half.

Over late I've been playing (and enjoying) AC albeit 'historically' modified, some great cars but obviously nowhere near what I have on the old warhorse, GTR2.
yup if it's anything like a modern take on GTR2 I'm in!

Worst looking titles out there for a VR racer like me.

I know that you disagree because you're a widescreen user, for you it will probably work well because you're the nr.1 fan of Unreal Engine for racing games. Also because you don't care about anti aliasing artifacts/blur, non moving mirrors, shadow pop in. All issues of the Unreal Engine that are part of WRC and ACC.

And WRC is seen as a downgrade to DR2 by the majority of it's racers. One of the best looking titles in the genre is quite easy when the competition is RBR and the old WRC's which are from a studio with zero budget. But I wonder if you've seen the rain and snow effects at all in WRC, it looks horrible.

Looks promising, good track record of being able to deliver promised games, even if features and level of polish aren't to everyone's taste. PCARS2 I liked the in game but not the non driving parts, hopefully this is finally the GTR2 successor we've been hoping for.

I must say, that RSS Aston in Assetto Corsa is mighty pretty...

I understand it's being built for mods or a marketplace or something, so let's see where that goes. Look forward to seeing and I hope this one can be a bit more 'focused' that PCARS tried to be.

Guys on youtube channel already saying it looks incredible! XD!
Who does say it? It's impossible to judge incredible some raw footage taken outside the screen and with an alpha build of the game. For sure it's interesting to know there's some gameplay running. I think people is happy to some another challenger in the simracing market. I'm among them. Imagine football fans forced to live with FIFA/EAFC arcade and once was PES lost in the ocean of WiP. We are more lucky, as simracers. ;)

I really like what I see from the (very early) physics approach. Cars seems to feel running on actual tires, having these littles bouncing from tires rubber's suspension. And apparently no input lag, what is ever a good sign. Waiting for WMD program to try myself.

it's quite worrying seeing their "gurus" testing things while they can't even manage to get a normal fov
Well at least Doug has some genuine credentials from racing. Whilst this is at straight4's web site, it is an interesting tidbit about Doug as well as his take on modern AI in racing sims and why older games seem better at it.

While I do not own a large curved screen, I have seen posts over the years mentioning the blurring around the edges when using screens similar to the one in the video for other sims like rF2.

Cockpit details actually look very good, the only thing you can properly see in that over the shoulder overexposed video. Weird choice of the work presentation unless it's just unintentional leak.

I wonder if another dev team will be fixing this mess a decade after these videos...

I jumped a bit further into the subject of what you claim. The pro's of the WRC are clearly there, handling, physics, sounds, stage design, all better than DR2. But the engine choice regarding graphics and performance is just terrible. A VERY tiny minority in the Steam reviews seem to like the graphics but even the positive reviews are filled with con's about the graphics/performance. So you're somehow just a unreal engine fanboy but there's not much basis for this with your WRC best looking titles in the genre claim. Just some random WRC reviews:

- Graphical issues, grass clipping through the cockpit interior, sometimes weird lighting reflecting from outta nowhere and the worst rain I think I have ever seen in a game in the last 15 years, it is falling in slowmotion and it almost looks like it is layered on top of the screen, almost like a placeholder.

- After patch 1.3 game runs much better and would recommend picking it up if you were a fan for Dirt Rally 2.0, the graphics do suck, especially Monte Carlo because of LOD's and Unreal 4 having a hard time with that (stages with dense foliage close to the road look way better than ones were you can see far into the distance), but I feel that's a limitation of Unreal engine 4 not being especially made for racing games, unlike their old EGO engine, not an excuse but it is what it is.

- While Dirt Rally 2.0 feels like a love project that has been going on since the original Dirt Rally, EA Sports WRC feels like a rushed, low-budget, unfinished game. Although the variety of tracks is nice, the graphics and especially the lighting look very old and of poor quality.

- Even WRC Generations (on Steam Deck) runs and looks better than this. Or even Forza Horizon 5, a fully open world and dynamic game, on graphical settings that make it pleasing to look at without sacrificing performance too much.

- 4. Not too well optimized. I have to make the graphics settings way lower to get the same FPS as I do in DiRT, meaning that DiRT ends up looking better than this game since it is easier to run on my PC.

- In Dirt Rally 2.0 every track looks georgous with plenty of details crafted with passion. In WRC every landscape looks like randomizer and the graphics look worse (the road, rain drops, lightning, landscape). Sometimes it's really hard to recognize the road because of lack of contrast to the surrounding.

- Is it a better game than DR 2.0? Right now, apart from handling it's barely better.
Pros:-Handling-Car builder-Cool routes and locations-Sounds-Wrc carsCons:-Graphics (Some stages look gorgeous and some stages look like from Dirt Rally 1)-Performance

- Graphics are somewhat underwhelming. The rainfall effect is one of the worst I've ever seen in any generation - as is the snow, it looks glitched. Snow has a ridiculous looking sparkle effect (thankfully not visible when in the cockpit at least) that's not even attached to the snow. Some pauses while driving, which will hopefully be fixed soon (some seem connected to loading sound effects even). Performance is barely acceptable on my 4090 with DLSS enabled and a bunch of settings turned down. Frame rate seems to go down when actually going fast.

- It is really hard to like this game when it stutters ALL THE TIME

- I really wanted to like this game but I can't.
It runs terribly bad and I have a i9-14900K with an RTX 4090. And I'm not talking about the random stutters that this game had at launch, I'm talking about massive chopinness and constant sub 15fps dips. The latest patch managed to make things worse, even when it claimed it was a performance patch.

- I can confirm that this game still has some issues.• Graphical bugs • Stuttering (despite having a reasonably good system)

- stupid devs didn't even add shader compilation to an unreal engine game, even my dog knows this is a bad thing edit, the so called performance and shader comp update changed nothing, classic

- It's an upgrade on some fronts compared to Dirt Rally 2.0. Physics feels a lot better and now we have longer stages. With that being said the performance is absolutely horrible even on high-end hardware.
I should not have to tweak setting to get acceptable performance with a 7950x3D and a 4090, yet here we are.

- A fun rally game with lots of potential, but the performance is horrible.Pros:The cars feel amazing to driveThe cars sounds like music to the earsAll real life WRC stagesCareer mode & management is fun

Cons:
Graphics are not a big step up from Dirt Rally 2.0
Frame drops as bad as 60fps -> 13fps
Night driving looks terrible with visual artifacts and has half of the fps
Game stuttering, no shader pre-compilation means a big frame stutter everytime you encounter a new visual effect

- Unplayable with a 4090, 5800X3d, 32 gigs of RAM, and NVME drive. Even on the lowest settings, driving through a puddle causes significant stutters. It doesn't look any better than Dirt 2.0. The physics feels nice when it works, but it's not worth buying until they fix this garbage.

- Performance is atrocious, graphics looks ok. Without DLSS, game is unplayable even on high. Microstuttering.

- The content is all there, and it's a promising start, but man the performance issues seriously could use some more work, even after two updates. No reason my system should be running this game poorly when I have better than what's recommended.

- I personally haven't had any MAJOR performance issues, although I do wish they would have used Unreal Engine to its full potential. The game looks pretty muddy (hehe) and overall outdated, but I think its good enough for what the game is.

- I would say this game is way below expectation. The frame rate is literally way too low for such a not-so-good graphics. To make it worse, there are frequent disgusting frame drops and lag, which is fatal for a racing game that requires quick reaction. Do need optimization before it's actually playable.

- absolutely loved dirt rally 2. how can be possible the same developers produced this mess of a game. i was so hyped for this and now we have a game looking much worse and performing so badly compared to the old one. whoever decided to use unreal engine for a racing game should be immediately fired from the company.

- Performance issue is severe in this game. Stutters are everywhere, making it unplayable.

- I don't see any improvement on the previous game Dirt Rally 2.0, the performance is worse and the graphics are much the same.

etc.etc.etc.etc.

Look it up yourself. The con's of this title is clearly the engine choice(deciding factor of the graphics/stutters/performance) and that's not even with VR implemented yet.

Until now these Unreal Engine issues are also visible in Rennsport and ACC. You can think that ACC is one of the best looking titles in the genre. But when I'm racing in it, I see anti aliasing artifacts, I see shadows that constantly TRAVEL with me, they don't render further than ~100-150 meters in front of me and that's with the highest possible settings/all tweaks, the mirrors are NOT adjustable and don't move with head movement. And the shaders also look not realistic to me. The game only shines in night performance/visuals to me.

I see all these visual issues now transported to gtrevival, this ON TOP of the VR issues, which will be even bigger than what I just described. I expect a mess like WRC's visuals/performance. You might like it, but the majority sees that the Unreal Engine is the weakest point of the new much anticipated WRC release. It's stated in almost all reviews that the visuals/performance are the biggest disappointments of the title.
