Formula One in 2023 is away with three races down and the little matter of 20 still to go. Now that the yearly routine has begun and fans are ever more excited for each weekend's racing, attention turns to the official F1 game.

We are yet to hear any concrete information on the upcoming title dubbed F1 23 despite being just two months from the anniversary of last year's game release. Whilst not true information on the game itself, Codemasters and EA Sports did announce last night that the upcoming release would be getting a closed beta.

Applications for this public closed beta are now open and close on Friday 21 April. If you want to take part in this wide-scale test, show your interest by signing up to the EA Playtesting program. Sign up to the scheme with an EA account and select the F1 game program.

A good sign for F1 23?

Last year's official Formula One game, F1 22 released with several bugs, glitches and issues. Whilst this was the first time EA had overseen the development of an F1 game for some time, one wouldn't expect such a buggy launch for one of the largest games studios in the world. Clearly looking to right past wrongs, it's good to see that EA is setting up all the tools needed to make the 2023 game more of a success.

Will you be participating in the F1 23 Closed Beta? How excited are you for the next Formula One game?

I'd rather give Motorsport games my money (at least for rf2 discounted dlc) than EA honestly

f1 2020 was a fun game and the following titles barely made any improvements that justify me paying more for them (EA killed regional pricing after it acquired Codemasters making the game 3x more expensive in my country)

Unless this title is a revolution, with massive improvement on ffb, physics and damage EA will not get my money, they gotta justify the3x price increase (they won't btw)

Will be trying to get in the Beta! I have been applying since F1 2020 so hopefully this may be my opportunity! I use both wheel and controller which may be more helpful to Codemasters. Looking forward to helping everyone else actually enjoy the game at launch if I'm chosen.

Actually it's totally revelant. The poster said " feel real". That to me means the poster knows what a real F1 car feels like to drive. If the poster had said, "I don"t like the feel or I can't seem to get it to respond to my inputs like other sims", then you would be correct that prior experience would not be the determining factor in the game's play.

Having fun is one thing, feel real is another.
do you really think a guy named PanchoVila is a hidden synonymous for a IRL F1 driver?
Nice. Dream on :roflmao:

I passed on last year’s edition, for the first time since the original game in 2010. Over the years, I have realized that this game grabs my attention for a few weeks and then, I lose interest and don’t play it anymore. Considering how expensive it is at launch, and how buggy it is every single year (not just last year), I can spend my money elsewhere.

Many things were irritating when I played the game: the races are usually uneventful, the AI never makes mistakes, etc. That and the addition of useless stuff like F1 Life (last year) or Breaking point (in 2021) mean I won’t buy the game in 2023.
Braking Point in 2021 was actually quite fun when I played through it myself. Also AI did finally start to make mistakes in 22, however you said you passed on it so you haven't seen it.

Beta testing for a EA F1 game would be like being a taste tester for Mcdonalds.

The might adjust the flavor a bit to match the marketing, But the underlying philosophy is still the same so it will taste like crap, be assembled without care by people with no passion, have little to no impact and be quickly forgotten.

Work, work, Money made.

Each to their own I say. I love the complete F1 racing simulation. The strategy, the pitstops, the safety cars and the atmosphere. You stick with AC and a modded car.
I agree, sitting in the car, in the garage, with the crew around you, and then firing up the car is kind of cool. I'd prefer it if they gave us the option to drive the car out of the pits (and into the pits) manually though. And now that they've included VR, its even better.

I just wish they would get the driving feel and physics to a reasonable level. I'm not talking Rfactor2, Assetto corsa or iracing level. That would be unreasonable expectations. If only they could get it to Grand Turismo or even GTR2 level, (I mean c'mon that's a 18 year old game).
If they could do that, the rest of the game is great. Without the driving being reasonable i just can't bring myself to play it.

Did they? I got about 10 hours or so in F1 '22 on Xbox Series X and I've not seen one mistake yet.

F1 '21 had a fair bit of AI mistakes until it got patched out, then they were basically on rails like before.

Like I stated earlier, I own them all. But F1 2020 has the AI making mistakes and much more like random engine blows etc. I love it.

When they release '22 with VR I was in like a nuff-nuff eating bathsalts..
then I played it..
they wont fool me again.

Been a while since I played '20 so I can't say for certain if I remember that but I know that with '21 the AI made a fair few mistakes like running into cars, mechanical issues, etc in the initial builds (when the game actually worked) but it did get patched out. I for some reason can't get on with '22 like I did with '20 and '21.

I don't know what it is but it just feels really sluggish and slow to get initial turn in and then coming out of the corner it feels incredibly twitchy. I guess I need to mess around with my controller settings a bit more but struggling!

I've been playing since '13 :).

While someone mentioned braking point earlier, it was a great addition to the game.

Heh, every new EA/Codies teaser just gets me reinstall my F1C99-02, now playing with 4K optimization for nowadays 65" TV and AMD graphics and modern day simrig. Gets me every time (edit: and now with even more F1C mod material, long gone from the Internet, but just found on DVD's in my garage!).

Think last time I really used time on Codies was in their '13 version, teased by the classic content, but dissapointed with not full 1990 grid, once again due to silly exclusive rights reasons.

Which might be a bit silly, having both '20 and '22 titles in my Steam library (via Steam Sales), but never relly got more than a pit-out/pit-in on those.

Really don't know what EA should do to get me jump back on the band wagon.
But beta-release news are definitely not one of them, leading thoughts to half baked full releases with numerous quickfixes dropping for the entire remaining season.

Maybe a title fully baked within first three real world grand prix weekends will do it.
Until then, I'm back to enjoying 60ies sports car racing and ancient single seaters from ISI immensely.
How do you manage to use other than the stock strange F1C resolutions ??? Is there a tool for that?

From the first edition (2009?) to 2020, the game got better little by little every year. We skipped 2021 but 2022 is disappointing. Recently drove in 2020 and I immediately noticed that the graphics in 2020 are just more beautiful than in 2022.
I hope 2023 goes in the right direction again.

The 2022 cars drive different from the 2020 cars in the game. They have a more glued to the ground feeling, but I can feel the same with F1 2022 cars in rF2. So I guess it is the new ground effect what makes the change in driving, not because Codies did a bad job. And yes, I prefer driving an F1 car in rF2 to Codies, but Codies does give the whole experience with all the rules of F1. That also has something.
I haven't bought a F1 game since F1 2019 because they got rid of the good classic content (that at the end I used more than the 2019 cars) but I remember how F1 2020 looked amazing in comparison and I was surprised the next game to be a downgrade. The lightning in F1 2020 looked absolutely fantastic and realisitic. Not sure any other game reached that level.

Well I just use same workaround as getting FIA GTR still going on modern Win OS.
I.e. I just find the VIDEOGUID, e.g. via DXDIAG report or just more simple, more or less copy-paste values from 4K settings in my GTR2 install config.ini file:
Code:
VIDEOGUID=
VIDEODRIVER=
VIDEOMODE=
VIDEOREFRESH=
WINDOWEDMODE=
RUNBENCHMARKS=
FSAA=
VSYNC=
SHADERLEVEL=
Same base ISI engine, you know ;)

Edit: if you don't have GTR2, config.ini settings can be used from GTL or SimBins as Race07, WTCC, STCC, etc. as well.
/off-topic off

Since my last post, I in fact started up my engines in both F1 2020 and F1 2022. Not that bad, strictly simwise as my first experience. So now I'm in the need of a modern formula wheel for my simrig :p

Without saying anything about physics, even the sound waves and steering wheel UI can't be done well. I don't have any hope for them anymore

I just hope F123 doesn't have that awful EA Anti-Cheat that FIFA had. I still have issues with it to this day. If F123 has it, then I'll skip for the first time ever.
