Cars From Your Childhood - Was the 80s the best decade?

Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari F40, Zakspeed Capri – these were the posters I had on my bedroom walls when I was a kid in the 80s.

What were your dream cars?

For me, the 80s was one of the best decades for cars – as well as music and movies.

Yes, sometimes they may not have driven as good as they looked – but my god they looked great!

From my perspective, cars were iconic: posters were for sale in most shops, you could buy toy cars of almost any car, almost every other advert on TV seemed to be a car. Who remembers a Peugeot 405 driving through flames to “take my breath away” – my dad worked at Peugeot at the time, so maybe it’s just me!

Cars caught our imagination, and that’s why so many iconic television series and films used recognisable cars – We Tom Selleck driving a Ferrari 308 GTS in Magnum, the A-Team driving around in a GMC van, the V8 Interceptor in Mad Max, the Bluesmobile in Blues Brothers, Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters, the Ferrari 250 GT California in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Batmobile from Batman, General Lee, KITT, and of course the DeLorean.

As well as so many iconic cars across media, we had so many cars available to various walks of life.

Hot Hatches

It was such a great decade for cars, we’d seen the birth of hot hatches in the 1970s, with the Renault 5 Alpine and the Golf GTI – but it wasn’t until the 80s that hot hatches really took off!

We had the Mk2 Gold GTI, the Peugeot 205 GTi, Renault 5 GT Turbo, The Vauxhall Astra GTE, Ford Escort RS Turbo, Lancia Delta Intergrale, Ford Fiesta XR2, Citroen AX GT and so may others. Even the likes of Mazda, Talbot, and Suzuki made hot hatches.

Yes, I might be writing about these cars from a United Kingdom point of view, so were hot hatches prevalent in your countries?

Fast Saloons

We had the E30 M3 – which is probably my favourite M3 ever, we also had both the Sierra and Sierra Sapphire Cosworth, and someone decided to throw a V12 in a XJR-S. There were loads of fast saloons during the 80s, I’m sure I’ve missed loads or maybe even your favourite car of all time?

Super Cars

Super cars have been around since the 1950s, pretty much when Mercedes released the 300SL, however in my opinion it wasn’t until the 80s that these cars caught the imagination of children and car enthusiasts.

We had the Ferrari 288 GTO, Porsche 959, Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Testarossa, RUF CTR Yellowbird, Ford RS200, Lotus Esprit Turbo, and of course the Ferrari F40. I think I had a picture of most of these on my bedroom walls.

Racing Cars

Where do I start? The Audi Quattro, Nissan Skyline R32, McLaren MP4 (numerous versions), Lotus 98T, Williams FW11, BMW M1 Procar, Zakspeed Capri, any Group C car, the list could go on and on.

There’s too many to mention and I literally could talk about iconic 80s racing cars all day. I loved that there was insane turbos on some of these cars, I loved that aerodynamics took a giant step forward in this decade and I loved that BBS wheels were on pretty much everything!

Can another decade rival the 1980s for cars?

The great thing about most of these cars, is that they are available for you and I to drive today in a racing sims. Yes, I love driving modern day race cars, but for me there’s something special about stepping (virtually) into so many iconic cars of my childhood.

What cars would you like to see in a sim?

Electronics have dulled my interest in road cars now. I like a bit a wildness. Obviously they are safer and people can't screw up as badly as they used to but for me the pinnacle of driving was probably the Mk2 Golf GTi or maybe the Mk2 MR2 I had.

The 80s and early 90s were the best in terms of road cars, simply because planned obsolecense was not yet a thing, and the brands (or at least some of them) still strived to make cars that were well built and would last.

The lexus LS400, the mercedes W124, the Hondas of the era, etc, are engineering and product wise, the best cars ever built.

There was some amazing eighties cars but i have to go for the seventies and my love for Porsches especially .
John Wyer 917k (1970 Le Mans) and 908/3 (Targa Florio), 917/30 , 911 2.7 RS , 930 Turbo , 934 , 935 , 936.
Plus ; Ferrari 512BBi , Lotus Esprit , Lotus 72 and any car that Steve Mcqueen or Paul Newman drove !!

I do love the 80s road cars, though id lean more towards 90s for race cars.
80s road cars although prehistoric by modern tech and safety standards, had a much better feeling of connection to the road for the driver. Theres nothing quite like driving with no ABS, no TC, and no ECU, just a cable to a throttle, a rack to a pinion and away you go!
Which might explain why I bought a Ford Capri as my first car in 2006 (didnt actually start driving till 2007!). Started as a daily driver and still have it today, albeit with a 2.9 V6 from a Scorpio Cosworth. A power to weight ratio of around 200bhp per tonne is quite fun ;)
Still funny to think the car is actually a year older than I am, and in better condition!

I dont have any personal history towards the 70's or 80's since I am quite a bit younger than that, but for me it has to be the 70's at least for racecars. The decade starts of with a nice sportscars battle between the 512 and 917. At the touring car front, Group 2 is nice and healthy with the Escorts and GTAms and later on Capris and 3.0CSL fighting in both the ETCC and later on in the DRM. The 911 starts to enter the race car game with the 2.8 and 3.0 RSR. Large Cup series such as the Renault 5 Cup start to appear. Mid seventies the change to new regulations. Porsche and BMW try to get some experience with turbos for the upcoming Group 5 resulting in insane cars like the 3.5 Turbo CSL and the 2.1 Carrera RSR Turbo. Group 5 comes around and after the regulation changes in 77 its an immediate success. In F1 we have the legendary battle between Lauda and Hunt and one of the best recovery stories ever. The cherry on top is the end of this deacade with the M1 Procar series in which Touringcar, Sportscar and F1 drivers of the time battle it out to see who is the fastest among them. So many great drivers emerged in the 70's: Lauda, Mass, Stuck, Röhrl, Haywood, Wollek, Bell and many more. Thats what makes the 70's so special to me.

My first beloved car (Honda CRX ED9) ever was bulit in 1989 and looks almost like this one:
Btw. little off-topic - do someone know a decent AC Honda CRX mod ?

There are some of them in the www. but never found anything good. Ok there is probably no chance to get a scratch made model with real data ;), but something feeling at least half-realistic would be really nice.

All this is so biased. Everyone thinks the car (and movies, and everything... ) from its own childhood were the best.

But, of course, from my 40 years of experience in this world I just KNOW that the Lamborghini Countach and the BMW M1 are the better looking cars ever made, as objective facts.

And Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Back to the Future are the best movies franchises BTW.

Nice how personal opinions work huh? I know for a fact that I completely disagree with you. :)
My favorite #2 and #3 behind the General Lee #fact :)

Pulp Fiction :inlove:

I still clearly remember a certain afternoon in the fall of 1980 when my dad's accountant drove into our driveway in this model:
1979CitroenCxTurboPrestige.jpg

I.e. maybe not exactly this model, but I'm quite certain it was a Citroën CX 2,3 GTi (Prestige or Pallas?).
The color was almost evil dark brown - and in the aftermath of the oil crisis (my dad as a dentist could just afford a yellow 1977 Citroën GS, of which was rusty already a year after delivery, and a 1970 435cc/26bhp Citroën Dyane 4 for my mom working as a part time nurse) it felt like an alien spaceship entering our house.

Then 3 years later, late summer 1983, related to a movement party with our new neighbor, who was severely disabled (Scheuermann's Syndrome/"Humpback", deformed and overgrown arm/scorn), and he wanted to get more soda and beer. I had expected someone from the family to help him, but out of their newly built garage I could hear a rumble and he out rolled this model on his own and drove away to the grocery store:

MorganV8.jpg

Ie. not exactly this model, the Morgan V8 was from the mid-1970s, and same color.
This was the car I which I had had my ears full of from a car-loving uncle, knowing the demand of "gorilla grip" (modern understanding: it had giant FFB strength).

The impressions and moment of surprise is still embedded in my body and soul.

Edit: Aaand yes, ofcourse remember a day in the schoolyard when a teen boy came with the latest car magazine with the F40 on the front page, which most of the teen boys were totally crazy about and I then said that "I still would rather prefer a classic Morgan V8 in racing green and with white leather seats" (the following weekend I secretly bought the same car magazine and had to suck everything in me about this iconic supercar ) :D

Awh the 80's
I remember dreaming of wanting to cruise around in one of these as a kid.

Instead our family of 5 cruised in one these.
So nice, my dad bought 2 lol

Still to this day it amazes me that he was able to fit 5 humans a dog, luggage, a canoe on the roof and tow a camper trail ?

Car posters / pics on my bedroom walls when I was growing up in the 80's:

Ferrari Testarossa
Lamborghini Countach
Corvette C4 ZR-1
Porsche 928 (never was into the 911 until more recently, but I thought the 928 was great)
Ferrari 328
Camaro IROC Z-28! (one of my friends actually had one, the others were all unobtainable dream cars)

Wall # 2 was various fighter jets, helicopters, submarines and aircraft carriers

Wall #3 : Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dio, Dokken, Judas Priest, Rush, Megadeth, Van Halen, Queensryche

Wall #4: small space between the door and closet > Heather Thomas poster.

I didn't get into racing until the early 90's. But my favorite race cars, probably still to this day, are the Indy Cars from around the '94-'96 period.

...unforgotten the Countach from RockyIV. Had massive impact on me and sleepless nights
If we're thinking of the same car, it's a Jalpa - as a side note Rocky 4 has been remastered and will be in cinemas during November.
