5 Impressive Features Revealed at Gran Turismo 7’s State of Play Event

5 New Features in Gran Turismo 7.jpg
The most recent PlayStation State of Play event was a showcase of many of Gran Turismo 7’s new or improved features, and here are five standouts.

Sony and Polyphony Digital held a State of Play event to showcase many of the interesting features players can expect when Gran Turismo 7 is released on March 4th. Here are five of the features to be aware of:
  1. Dynamic Time and Weather – This was a feature that those who have been following the development of Gran Turismo 7 had expected, but it seems the implementation of proper weather and time-of-day systems will meet all expectations. Like we see in some of our favourite racing sims, you can expect rain to form puddles in low spots over time, and dry lines to form as the weather clears and warms.
  2. Weather Radar – And speaking of weather, players will have the ability to track approaching weather patterns using an in-game HUD app. Not unlike what we see professional race teams using, clouds will appear in the weather app as spots of varying darkness and players will be able to see their position relative to those clouds.
  3. Controller Vibrations to Indicate Loss of Front-End Grip – To take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, Gran Turismo 7's players using a controller will be able to feel the scrub of the car’s front tires over the road surface when traction is lost.
  4. 2,500 Scapes for Photography – Gran Turismo Sport’s impressive Scapes mode, which allows players to take high-res photos of their cars, has been carried over and expanded for Gran Turismo 7. The level of control the Scapes mode gives you over the camera is impressive, and it’s an easy task for even amateur photographers to take stunning and realistic pictures.
  5. Drag Racing – Drag racing is a surprisingly rare mode in racing games, but Gran Turismo 7 will give you the ability to do so. The challenge will be to tune or upgrade your car appropriately, and then manage the traction under acceleration.

There were several other features discussed in the State of Play, including the mapping of stars and planets in the night sky, cloud creation physics, 3D audio mix, and replays synced to music. It seems that PD and Sony have struck a balance between features Gran Turismo players want from the series, while taking advantage of the capabilities of the PlayStation 5.

What stood out to you from the State of Play event? Let us know in the comments.

advantage of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller a simracing game you can play with a gamepad is not a simulator, you can add lights, stickers or vibration but still not a simracing simulator if you can drive a car with a gamepad or joystick, sorry but nothing interesting for me on console, still love PC options.
I have, or have had, every major simulator as you call them. Iracing, rf2, ams, raceroom, dirt, dirt 2, etc. they can all be driven with a gamepad. And yes, i also have a wheel, 2 as a matter of fact.

If it comes to PC I'll buy it. Got Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding and probably geting God of War in the next few days. I can wait.
I would say that's very unlikely, but if someone told me God of War would be on PC I'd have laughed at them.

I'd be all over this if it came out on PC. I love that series, but won't be able to get a PS5 for a long time.

I get it they added a weather radar. The AI is probably so slow, you have all the time in the world to check out the weather radar during the race. That way, the races will be a bit more challenging!

They call that video "State of Play" and then there's almost zero gameplay.

Lots of rambling about graphics and history lessons and replay- and photomodes, but absolutey nothing about how the actual gameplay will be like. And considering how GT5 and GT6 were absolute garbage in that regard, there's sadly no way to trust them here.

In the last two games you always started at the back and then had to plow your way through a massive field of ridicously slow AI cars. In every single race. Those weren't racing games, they were just about collecting cars with a bit of driving.

I'm really huge fan of the series and it's a must buy for me ( already did !) It has the great mix of realism / arcade , and I really love all that extra stuff like the muzeum where you can read bit more about the cars you are interested in

sure , it has issues , lot of which have been there ever since - like always starting mid pack etc. , but overall, it's still one of my favorite racing games of all time, and looks like they are going to improve a lot over Gran Turismo Sport, so yeah, really looking forward to it

about the AI, .. if people are saying that Gran Turismo isn't proper sim for the physics / driving, - from which I read "it's not a serious racing platform " , why would not so great AI matter? it's it's more casual ?

I haven't tried AI in iRacing, but compared to something like Asset corsa, I find it less likely for cars in Gran Turismo to spin me / crash into me. Is that what makes it unrealistic that they are too careful ? giving me too much room ?

especially in AC, I'm so often frustrated that I don't leave enough space to AI and they just crash me out, this never happened to me in Gran Turismo, and I would imagine my driving style is same in both
They call that video "State of Play" and then there's almost zero gameplay.
This could just easily be lost in translation, where the even name in Japanese is something more meaningful

Of course, but if you want feel close to the real you must use a wheel, load cells pedal, handbrake and shifter H, real races don't use a Gamepad you know maybe they gone crazy, and i don't want Talk about physics...just a Joke corner grip, etc, just tell me crazy for wanna feel a real Racing experience

As someone who's had a BLAST driving rF2 with an old PS3 controller without any assists or vibration in recent days -- including visually catching slides and throttle control to rotate the car -- I can't tell you how wrong you are. It's a unusual skill, I grant you that, but good physics are good physics, no matter your control device of choice.

Now... will GT7 handle like AC or GTR2 or rF2 or whatever we here prefer to play? I doubt it will feel as "simulationy". Especially judging by past GT titles. But that's a verrry different discussion to have. Plus, all our fave "sims" themselves handle very differently, correlate (or don't or can't) with real data to a different extent, and thus are all only very approximate and impressionistic virtual representations of true race car driving and handling... so who's to say which of them is most realistic? Not trying to start a flame war, but just felt it needed to be said.

IMO a game's handling simply needs to be plausible enough to enjoy driving (up to whatever your personal standard is), have cool features, and offer a good gameplay experience... and I'd be shocked if GT7 doesn't fit the bill in that regard for millions of people.
Of course you can enjoy with an arcade Game, but never forget is an arcade so far away from real, i saw on some arcade Games an Abarth fighting against a Huracán....funny? maybe but not real, i try to drive games with a respect from real. You can enjoy with one or another for sure, is a game, but they are different in the way what kind of people play or buy, millions of childrens maybe play GT, men plays Rf2, ACC, AC, Ams2, that's why sony is interested on selling forgetting real simulation, GT7 Will be no different from others GT, money is more important than physics that's true

well, what makes it more or less real ? VR vs looking at small square in front of you ?

at the end, it's so personal of what the person really wants to get out of it
often times it can be the competition factor, more then feeling like you are sitting in a car

and as much as some people hate the idea, playing game on gamepad is much more level field to compare games/sims, compared to steering wheel, which is so heavily affected by FFB etc.

I am very much looking forward to GT7 because its a very good overall package these games and to me i feel its a must buy for every racing games fan, no matter if hardcore simmer or arcade style gamer.
But what i will say that was most glaring is how bad windshield rain effects looked. They simulate (according to them at least) proper cloud formation and skys, tyreflex, body rolls etc but they cant make a ressource friendly rain effect animation, like seriously? Driveclub managed to implement their rain visuals without a drop in the games performance and to this day almost 8 years later they look absolutely stunning and are together with the mod(!!) for AC industry leading.
And you wanna tell me that a team like PD can't make anything that comes remotely close? Thats kinda sad, especially because rain effects add to how lifelike racing can feel and GT suffers anyways from a bit of being too clinically clean looking.

I would buy the PS5 and the PS VR2 if this game would run 100% in VR. If not, it's a pass, just can't do racing on pancake anymore.

I really, really enjoyed Days Gone. Wish there were more games like this.
I got about one third of the way into it and just lost the will to live to be honest.

Sure it was technically and graphically superb - I loved how the hoards acted especially, but I found the story lacking, the characters forgettable, and the gameplay bland and repetitive.

Reading around it seems that Days Gone is a bit of a marmite thing - you either love it or hate it, and I fall more on the hate it side, although hate is for too strong of a word really - it's more of a "didn't do it for me" kind of thing.

Keep your expectations low, GT7 will be a long seller with many updates and DLCs, almost a game as a service, and the main online game on PS5, it's not at all the same as offline solo games on sale after 3 months you can release on PC after they have ended their life on console.
