DeTomaso Pantera gr5 & GTX
1976 Group5 car info:
In Italy, in 1971 and 1972, the DeTomaso factory produces only 14 full race factory lightweight cars. This is one of them (VIN 02862) known as the CANDY car in the USA - Built 5-29-1972. VIN 02862 was sold to Jolly Club, an Italian race team belonging to Roberto Angiolini. In 1975 the car is sold by Jolly Club to M. Micangeli and campaigned in Italy. The car has kept the same trim for the 1975 season : red with white front hood.
In 1976, Micangeli asks Sala Marverti, official race preparator for the DeTomaso factory, to transform the car in GR5 trim. During the body conversion from GR4 to GR5, the look of the car is seriously modified and some GR4 spares are removed and taken away from 2862. New 16 inch wheels, different front and rear fenders, front and rear face are highly modified. The car starts racing at the World Championship for Makes in GR5 trim and is present in Austria, UK, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy - till 1977.
In 1978 Sala receives a brand new unnumbered chassis for free, from Alejandro De Tomaso himself, and starts developping a new GR5 (under chassis VIN 001). This car starts racing in 79, also raced at Le Mans 1979. VIN 02862 was put on sale (painted black) and was bought by the Portuguese race driver Tino Pereira. The black car races in Portugal, and wins the race at Autodromo de Estoril. Then Pereira gets in touch with Candy Portugal, a sister company of Candy Italy. At the time, Candy is present in Formula 1 with Tyrrell. The black GR5 car is now repainted in the Candy livery - and there is a big official presentation in a very famous hotel in Lisboa. In 1981, the FIA announces that the GR5 category will be abandonned in 1982. Tino, with the support of Candy, decides to re-transform the car in GR4 trim. This work is partly performed in Italy at Sala’s workshop, and partly in Portugal by Tino’s staff, with Candy as the main sponsor. The car at this time, still carries a license number plate AAH-60-16 and the steel riveted plate VIN 6227 is still affixed on top of the original 2862 VIN.
1979 Group5 car info:
In 1979 a 2nd much more radical car was built up. Unlike the 76 car which was simply a converted Group-4 car the new car was built from a brand new chassis delivered from the DeTomaso factory directly to Sala/Marvetti and stamped with the chassis number 001. While better and faster in every way than the early car it was still no match for the 700hp+ turbo cars that were now common in group-5. Raced first with a short tail version of the body work, the car seems to have be emedatley modified to a long tail configuration for LeMans and never went back to the short tail GR-5 body.
The is the car presented here. This car was eventually modified all the way up to and raced as a group-C car in the early 80s. Its race record unfortunately contains may DNFs due to all manor of mechanical issues common to cars of this much performance with limited development. The car is presented here in its long tail 1979 Group-5 trim and specification.
GTX car info:
Hugh Kleinpeter purchased chassis 1603, then entered it in IMSA racing by the end of 1974. He was no newcomer to racing, and had entered many international events before. He was a true Pantera fanatic, and he purchased a 1971 car, which he modified extensively. He replaced the body with a fully detachable fiberglass one, which allowed an easy access to every mechanical component. The car was also a right hand drive, which was also unusual in the US.
For the 1978 season the car was to be extensively modified in order to meet the new GTX rules. It was the only way to improve the car and to make it become a true racer. The rear end of the car had been entirely re-designed and a new rear wing had been added, in order to improve the stability of the car. The car now was three hundred pounds lighter, had fifty more horsepower, and was aerodynamically more efficient. It now sported a full race ZF transaxle, which should be a welcome addition to a better servicing. The car was enhanced, with a detachable front and rear. It was renumbered GT4K-011. The engine was an Australian fuel injected NASCAR block. The car had become a real eye catcher, and was extremely impressive. It no longer looked like a GT car, but it was now a true GTX.
