PC2 Shifting problems

I've tried searching the forums for this problem and haven't found any kind of solution so hopefully someone can help me out. The issue I'm having is when I'm leaving pit lane or at the beginning of time trials...the game has the car in first gear and when it gives me manual control it automatically shifts the car to 5th gear without me shifting. It's annoying to have to shift back down to be in the correct gear. Has anyone had this issue and know how to fix it?

Do you have a h-pattern shifter that is put into 5th gear?

What @jimortality said, if you set it to manual pitstops then the car is under manual control and you drive out of the box and pitlane yourself and also engage/disengage the pit limiter yourself. Should solve the problem, in theory.

This is exactly what it was. I guess I accidentally put it into gear and didn't notice it
