Lets see if the next year the lie that Alonso haters say become true: every team he leaves just start wining, lets see, honda leaves his team, will honda make a motor with 100% reliability and more hp than mercedes?

Honda can only get better, and this is great for Red Bull to become a factory team in a few years. This will also benefit the junior academy, opening avenues for their young drivers to compete in Super Formula, arguably the most competitive series below F1.
But this will only go through if Honda shows signs of improvement (which will be the case), which will royally screw McLaren's hopes of becoming a top team.
The deal is great for Honda and Red Bull, but for the sake of finishing 5th for one year and keeping a whinging Spaniard who has a year or so left in him, scrapping a deal which can make them a top team, is beyond me.
Surely McLaren would think long term and let Alonso go instead and be patient, because Honda will come good. On the other hand, Renault's Jolyon Palmer and Verstappen have had constant mechanical failures as a result of the Renault power unit, surely Renault isn't that much better than Honda?

While Renault has had it's share of woes for the past few years (lower power, etc...) they seem to be a bit improved to the point of winning a race this season.
Honda on the other hand, seems to be going backwards... despite a full additional year of unrestricted time towards engine design and development before entering F1.
I think...given McLaren's history and business model, the parting with Honda had to be done.
Remember, McLaren is in the sport of Formula 1 to enhance their 'visibility' and by so doing...sell cars.
They can't continue do so much damage to their image, as to put the car division at risk of losing value.
That is precisely what would happen, if potential customer see them associated with failure...especially powerplant failure.

That is extremely unlikely.

Renault engines are only marginally better than Honda in performance and, lately, reliability, so I expect McLaren to jump up a few places on the grid, but nothing more.

Congrats to Sainz hopfully it does his career the world of good, but all this driver swapping and engine deals for drivers is a joke, it's not going to win any championships for any of them, Mercedes have the monopoly and that isn't going to change anytime soon. Well not until 2021 when hybrids will be no longer, unless Ferrari can find some more pace and make a challenge, but it will still be a 2 horse race for some time, as Renault won't catch up with Mercedes or Ferrari IMO.

Liberty Media has already pointed to a major change in powerplants for the 2021 season, cant wait tbh.

Porsche have shown interest in building engines as has Cosworth, and this is what is needed to get F1 back to being a decent category, one that's truly entertaining and worth watching again.

Red Bull will be the winners here and MacLaren the losers.
The Honda engine will eventually come good and Red Bull will have it.
MacLaren will be using the Renault engine and cursing losing the Honda finance and a 4 years struggle wasted.
I agree Alonso is a brilliant driver but does not bring much to the team; JB could have done a better job at half the price and far less moaning...better for Vandoorne too, as a team mate.

Toro Rosso driver and Red Bull junior Carlos Sainz Jr. has reportedly secured a contract to drive for Renault Sport F1, paving the way for McLaren's Renault engine switch in 2018.

Until we see them confirmed officially and on the grid this remains more media speculation.

It has yet to be seen if Sainz will be in the Renault this year, apparanty STR prefers to keep there line-up for the rest of the year. My bet is that it wil happen by Malaysia but not sure yet.

Also besides of that it seems that Renault is going to break up with Red Bull, their intention is not to extend the contract they have with Red Bull that will expire by the end of 2018. Some sources within Daily Mail come with this news, no idea how reliable they are or if it is just speculation. But it seems that Renault have given Red Bull notice about this, nut sure when this will be official.

There are also positive talks about new engine suppliers stepping in but I yet have to see if this is really going to happen. Apparently Renault,Mercedes and Ferrari are reluctant about the new engine regs and they want to change as little as possible. One of the things being discussed was a standard KERS system wich is most likely not going to happen now. Basically the new engine regs are not going to change that much from what we have now. The only new thing will be the BI-Turbo and a more simplistic version of the hybrid systems where the MGU-K/H will be removed or replaced.

My prediction will be that we will not see new engine suppliers entering F1 in the near future. I think it would be more interesting for them to actually step into FE since full electric engines is the future.
