Welcome back to Round 7 of the RDHCS Season 9.

I don’t know how global the Marmite brand is across the assorted nationalities of the RDHCS drivers, but for those of you not in the know, it’s a tangy yeast extract spread, generally served on toast, and it’s (borderline genius) advertising angle is that you either Love It or Hate It. With that clunky explanation out of the way, I can now say that Yas Marina was definitely a “Marmite” circuit. I was certainly in the “Love It” camp. As per my post-race account, apologies to Roland (and anyone else who got caught in it) for our touch, I should have been more aware.

There was also some more slightly spiky post-race chat about incidents. There is an incident reporting procedure, and if you choose not to avail yourself of it, then that is your choice, but that does mean you will not get anything looked at, and as per the rules always stated in every briefing, no finger pointing post-race. I stress this again now because I am not around for this Race, and want everything to be smooth for Knut.

Moving 7,000 miles South-East, we swap camels for kangaroos, sandals for thongs and falafel for a barbie as we go Down Under to Australia, specifically South Australia and the Adeliade Street Circuit in its 1988 incarnation.

Circuit Notes
As Jimi Hendrix once qualified one of his songs, this is a Slight Return to Adelaide 88, as it has previously done its duty as one of the Test Event venues for Season 8, only now it gets it’s stripe as a full venue with this round of Season 9.

Adelaide is the capital of the State of South Australia, and the 5th largest city in Australia. Named after Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (consort of William IV) it was founded in 1836, designed by Colonel William Light close to the River Torrens in a grid layout interspersed by wide boulevards and large public squares, and has been voted most liveable city in Australia for the past 2 years. I’m sure Warren will have something to say about that.

Adelaide has hosted 11 F1 Grand Prix events from 1985 to 1995, as well as an American Le Mans Series race on New Year’s Eve in 2000. This was the last race to be held on the longer (3.78 km) version of the course, the one upon which we will be racing (shown in black on the track map). It now holds annual rounds of the Australian V8 Supercars series, but now only using the shorter 3.2km layout. “Our” layout includes a couple of more interesting non-90° bends and slightly extends the back straight over the shorter layout.

Adelaide starts with a good length straight with the S/F line about 50% of the way along. The straight is long enough on a normal lap that you will be at very nearly full speed as you approach T1L, T2R, T3L – The Senna Chicane.

The approach to Senna drops away into downhill braking, and the starting complex is quite a different proposition to what we normally encounter in League races. It’s a virtual kerb-only Esse consisting of a couple of very bumpy kerbs that serve to funnel the wide open spaces of the straight into a much tighter line. There is a Cut Track over the right hand kerb if you don’t make the turn without sufficient attempt to drive it properly, and a wall on the inside if you try to go too far the other way. Instant Stop 'n' Gos can be awarded by the track (and have been in the past) in T1 for flagrant cuts and position gains.

T2R is much easier in itself, but a poor T1L will do all the damage to your line through T2R and severely compromise your lining up for the important T3L, which is why, even though it’s a fair way on from T2R it’s still classed as part of Senna.

T3L is important as it represents the start of the first part of open track on the lap, and a good exit from here can give you a chance of a move on someone with a lesser exit. This is particularly important as the subsequent 3 corners pretty much guarantee remaining in place, all 3 being 90° corners with little or no scope overtake without there being some help for the overtaker (intentional or not) by the overtakee.

T4R – Wakefield has a bumpy vitual kerb on the outside which can upset a car too eager on the accelerator. You get enough time to get the car pointing the right way before braking again for T5L.

T5L is a standard 90°, no real secret to it, and no real advantage to be made by any unusual lines through it. Just keep it neat, tidy and stay out of trouble. A quick squirt of gas and it’s back on the anchors for T6R – Flinders Street.

Flinders St. has a very similar profile to Wakefield, but is of far more import on the lap because it opens up onto the longest piece of straight so far on the lap. Get a good safe entry into Flinders amnd then absolutely nail the exit as best you can, and past the the exit for the short layout on your right hand side, building up speed before just coming over the brow of a slight rise and dropping down into T7L – Hutt Street.

Hutt Street is a much shallower Esse than we’ve encountered so far, and much higher speed too. A dab of brake, maybe even just a feather on the throttle will be enough to get your nose into Hutt Street, and once you do, it’s back on the accelerator through T8R, a great corner when taken at speed, and then it’s back on the brakes for T9R – Rundle Road.

Rundle is defined again by bumpy virtual kerbs that allow some leeway between themselves and the wall. This is a double edged sword in that taking too many liberties here will likely cause you to have to recover just when you need stable acceleration. Get up a good head of steam on Rundle and then just brush the brake/lift/feather and throw the nose across T10R, the junction of Hackney Road and Dequetteville Terrace.

T10R has a free standing Virtual kerb on its outside left boundary, and there is a Cut Warning lying out there for people who treat it’s placement with abandon. It’s very important to get a good T10R, as it opens up onto the long Brabham Straight. You reach top speed on here, before standing hard on the anchors for T11R – Dequetteville Hairpin, the slowest corner on the circuit.

Accelerate hard out of the Hairpin, treat T12L as part of the straight before again standing hard on the brakes for the sneaky T13L, which has the double threat on being uncambered, and having the hard wall right up against the outer track boundary.

Accelerate hard out of T13L, again treating T14L as part of the straight. T15R is a variable corner, depending on what car you are in. I’d expect the Escorts & Alfas to be taking T15R flat out, the Nissan’s and maybe Beemers with a feather & the muscles with a lift.

Whatever car you are in though, you need to get yourself lined up properly for the final corner T16R – Mistral Hairpin. This is a fairly wide and long hairpin, allowing for different approaches, but as always, getting on the gas too early will necessitate some recovery or remedial action from drivers.

Out of Mistral, it’s a flat out blast along the home straight, across the S/F line and onto a new lap of Adelaide 88.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-
All Corners Without Exception – The kerbs are not deemed as track, therefore 2 wheels must be within the white lines, on the tarmac, At All Times. Again, there are NO exceptions to this rule at any point on the circuit. Any exception to this rule is deemed illegal, any advantage gained by this method must be ceded immediately. Report people deliberately and excessively cutting. The worst offenders from previous seasons have not signed up, so I hope that this will be a non-issue this season.

Racing Room must be given to all drivers – and this works both ways. Divebombing into and across a corner denies people the chance to make the corner correctly just as much as someone obliviously (or deliberately) cutting the nose off of another driver who has achieved partial overlap fairly.

T1L & T2R – Especially on Lap1. The funneling effect of T1L makes this very difficult, especially on cold tyres. Drivers need to be fully aware of where people are, what approach they and others are taking and drive accordingly. The bumpiness of the kerbs is another factor to consider, and people who find themselves hung out on the right hand side of the track facing the kerbs with the Cut beyond it might try (although I don’t endorse this behavior of course) to throw their car back towards the track proper. Be aware of people around you, and of the racing line, as there is a lot of lateral movement through this section. Also be aware that any incidents caused by reckless or over aggressive driving in Turn 1 during the first lap will be dealt with severely, probably with a “no quali” penalty for Round 8 – the double length finale. The difference between this and previous tracks this season is the corner type, especially coming out of the Start.

T7L & T8R – Hutt Street. The temptation is to attack these Esses as it is a fast section of track, especially compared to the multiple 90’s preceding it. All drivers need to make sure that 2 wheels are kept on the track at all times. Please report any persistent and deliberate cutting through this section.

T10R – The kerb can give you a cut on the outside if you don’t respect it, throw people across the track if they don’t get the line right and have too many revs on, so you will need to be aware of sudden changes in line from people immediately in front of you.

T13L – This is a very sneaky corner, and if people get it wrong, they are likely to end up with their face in the wall, with their rear end sticking out across the track. It’s quite narrow there too, so you need to be aware of other people’s lines and behaviours. Drivers in the wall cannot just back out either – Safe rejoins are mandatory.

All points on the track – General Items

Drivers may put on their lights (and keep them on) during a timed qualification lap, so other drivers know to get out of the way when safe to do so.
No lights are to be flashed at any stage, under any circumstances, during the Race Session.
No Chat during the Quali or Race except by Race Control for information.
The Track must be re-entered safely so as not to ruin other peoples races.
Car damage must be assessed realistically to know if it is possible to make the pits or not.

Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

There were no reported incidents from Round 6

As a change from last season, and as a result that I am personally reminding you of each race with the new posts and the PM for passwords, 2 no-shows will mean removal from the League, whether they are consecutive or not.

Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.) Accident reports made within 24 hours of race completion will be ignored.

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHCS event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHCS.

Reporting Attendance

As GPCOS seems to be down, I will be sending a PM with the round password to all Signed-Up drivers. I will also be running an “Attendance” post. If you are definitely driving, you need to “like” the post. If you are NOT driving (or if you are unsure of attendance) you must post a reply to say so. If there is no response, or if a response is posted after 2 hours before race start time on race day, it will be treated as a No-Show. Again 2 No-Shows will mean removal from the league.

Scoring System

Points are scored down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.

Amazingly shamefull race for me... How to summarize it? Well, it's pretty hard I admit. I think I have to split my comment into several points.

1. The track:
I love. I am the exact opposite of Carlos there. I was always fan of street circuits. It started with Macau from RACE. And I TOTALLY enjoyed the claustrophobic atmosphere of this one!

2. My practice:
I jumped straightly into the action. I came back from work later than expected. But I was in quali 2 seconds behind Bob (I hope you don't mind if I use you as my top limit :p ) which was great satisfaction. I had perfect start as always (I am so disgusted to say that... But I find my starts extremely successful in every race - but I assume it's because I am the only one who push the throttle all the way down trough the field??? ). The lack of practice was minimal, I was really happy with myself. But it showed up differently later in the race.

3. The race:
I jumped immediately some positions forward. And the epic battle could begin! Firstly, I god horribly crashed from Hans who failed to brake (I admit I was earlier on the brakes due to traffic in front of me, but sorry, you must count with that... especially in the first lap, in the tightest turn after the longest straight). But I could continue and the car seemed stable so I wasnt bothered with that. All forgiven Hans :)
Then I caught, I try to remember, Jack, Peter, Hans, Tim.. maybe some more. And at that moment I was preparing in my head the after race summary - the best race of the season!! Haha. It was so much exciting, we were caching each other, making some mistakes then again getting too close. The walls gave it the right feel. I am not scared to say the X factor! But I, AGAIN, ruined my tyres in few laps. I then could even touch the understeer I was getting from the car. This fact made me do several out-track cuts. Well... I then had to do one of my first stop&go penalties. But my story doesnt end with that.

4. The experience:
After my first stop&go penalty, I was so angry. I couldnt then give a constant lap. Couldnt avoid another stop&go after another cut... But. I finally, and that is the most important thing I took from the race, finally learned how to drive the car. After the first penalty, I scratched 20 seconds of the 60 overal gap to the car in front. I was doing best lap times. With wore tyres. I firstly didnt realize that fact. Then, another stop&go. And again, another best laps. I had in the end the amount of 4 stop&goes. It was the cost of learning how to behave to the tyres - my biggest weakness. I now can say with clear mind that I can drive a car trough the whole race on one set of tyres. Nothing else matters now :D I can hardly explain my actual feelings from this. What is more, I learned how to brake this car too, how to drive slow sharp turns with no understeer and without overheating my tyres. What only bothers me is fact that I couldnt learn it without mistakes, without cutting, because I was doing not the same but better lap times than the group I mentioned in the race paragraph. maybe except Bob :D That leads me to that I could have finished much higher.

So... how to say it in few words. I learned from mistakes in this race. A lot of mistakes. But the experience I got is just super hyper amazing satisfaction to it. The car now feels the right way, I am much more confident (so I wont be that big threat to the others.. at least I hope so!!!). I enjoyed the first part of the race. I hated the second. I loved watching myself improving from lap to lap. Its not good to say that, but that all without any greater practice (I hope I can improve this part too!). I didnt hurt anyone, I wasnt hurt by anyone.

Well, thats not in few words. To make it short - yet, this race was key for me.

And I mustn't forget to mention that I won a battle with Tim in the final lap and wasnt lapped by him at last :D

Thanks guys for the race. I dont know how I sound or look like in this post, but its all my first after race feelings. And I thought it could be great to share them with you all.

(P.S.: I am sorry for speeding in the pit lane Knut... I havent got the automat turned off yet, so I couldnt do anything about it :( )

I don't like Adelaide either Warren. All through practice and into quali I got cut track warnings :(

My quali was good though, eventually breaking into the 1:48's! I only just made a 1:49 through all my practices. The start was ok, I kept clear of the accidents, and made it up to 7th at one point. My first cut warning came on lap 4, then I was clean until lap 21, when I got my 2nd. The 3rd came on the last lap :mad:.

I lost most of my places through scruffy driving, and I need to adjust my brake pedal, as it's too hard right now. I was getting cramp by the end of the race, which is not fun.

Ha-ha! Welcome to the private Gentlemans racing club, Ole! There is some hard rules to pass. Firstly you need to pass an act of initiation with some hard trial (some club races for example). Despite the fact, that we almost all know you. :D:D

It's nothing to do with any "initiation act", it's a standard rule that has been in place for all RDHCS Leagues :rolleyes: :

"After Round 1, the cut off time for signing up and being allowed to race is the Thursday before the race."

Ole Marius, why not join the Thursday Club Races to get your GTL fixes if Tuesday's become a problem. ;)

Look at that! So eager that I didn't see that one! ;P

I think... well, we'll see. Roy and I have tried to test out things for the RBR club on the same day each week to make planning easier. :) It's a long time since I've had so much fun driving on a track as I had yesterday driving the Mini :)
 
So glad I managed to last the distance tonight, in the second half of the race my arm was killing me! Turned my ffb down to 50% to help things out, but it was still tiring on a track like this. Had a good race by and large, martin had a better start so I had to defend into turn 1, and i concentrated on building a gap before the long straight to get away from the powerful BMW.
Congrats martin & dmytro on their podiums, it looked like a nice, close battle between the 4 of you on the final lap! Thanks thommo/Knut for sheeting this up, and rd for hosting.
 
I had a feeling things weren't going to turn out too good on this one. But for them to go south in just 2 laps...that was a bit too soon lol. I was hoping to get about half way through before having disaster strike.

Race starts and Warren and I manage to get through the first lap and a half without so much as a scratch. I actually start to think that things might actually not be so bad in this walled in hell of a track.
Sorry about the cut track you were handed in lap 1 trying to give me space Warren, I know you couldn't tell from where you were, but I had given you enough space to not have to cut.

Anyway, back to my short report. Almost 2 laps into it, going into the long fast straight, I notice Warren slow down a bit too late to avoid him. I did try to steer right but I still caught him. At that moment I hadn't realized he had slightly tapped Neil and slowed a bit. What a mess! Instead of typing it up, I'll just show you guys what happened.

The wonderful thing about walled in tracks is, you don't have to worry about a safe re-entry (I hope you can see my sarcasm here). There we were, sitting ducks! I was so lucky that no one slammed into me, ruining their race! Thank goodness you guys were able to avoid us.

Well, after that my concentration went down the tubes, I got enough cuts to warrant a "S&G" and then after I pitted I spun once more and then just felt like it was pointless to go on and quit out.

Sorry I couldn't react fast enough to avoid you Warren, I would have been fine with ruining just my own race and not taking anyone with me.

Now that I look at the replay, it would have turned out better if I had not noticed at all and hit Warren squarely. The fact that I steered right and caught him is what cause both of us to spin.

A race to forget fast,not a bad Q p14, easy from start an lost 2 places my first cut warning an in lap 2 my second so was very careful the rest of the race, all most al the time on my own an had to look out for the front runners passing me, one time having Jack? behind me just before the long strait an giving a bit to much room going to the inside getting my third an S&G !

Really enjoyed that race!

The track offers some unique challenges and it was really hard work to keep it clean. Had to restrain my heavy foot throughout the race but it was worth it in the end when we finally crossed the finish line. Was able to keep up with Jay, Dmytro and Martin, mostly because they were battling it out. Great driving by all of you. In the end, all four of us finished within 1.5s iirc. Good stuff:thumbsup:

To finish was a feat in itself. I received my second Cut Track warning a little over halfway which got my attention. I had several laps of close racing with Warren and Jacob..basiclly me holding them up but due to differenrt reasons they ended up behind me a couple times. Too bad Warren because you were flying once you got me.:( I could see Roland in the distance and I was thinking that his tires must be giving him fits now but I had to redirect my focus more on Jacob who was not on my tail for numerous laps. He finally passed me on the last lap at the hairpin at the end of the long straight. I unforunately gave him a a little side bump entering the turn ( on two different laps ..sorry sir ) but he came out ok while I did a little spin. My approach to the turn could have been setup better.

I noticed in Replay that my front wheels seem to be turning sharper than others in tight corners. I'll need to work on my Steering Lock and Degrees of Rotation again because when checking the Logitec Profiler it was set at 900 degrees. Should be about 650???

Tough going for some but I was able to stay out of trouble; however, I did practice Stop/Go's offline just in case.;)

Don't worry about it Carlos, it was just one of those unfortunate racing incidents. It all started because I almost did exactly the same thing to Neil. I was expecting him to thunder away down that straight as he always does, but he seemed to prop momentarily (either the bounce of his car over the curb, or maybe even a touch of lag). Luckily I was able to slow enough to only tap him, but the flow on effect would have caught you out.

My race was ruined by the ridiculous cut track penalties. I thought these were supposed to be designed to prevent "cheating" by actually cutting, but, apart from Turn 1 (which I can understand), the rest are caused by going a bit wide (eg. giving someone room, accidently understeering a bit, or being nudged wide by another driver). In none of these cases was a driver actually gaining anything (probably loosing :rolleyes: ). Ironically, you could actually "cut" severely on many of the turns and receive no penalty. And, as for my last penalty, I just shake my head in amazement. :O_o:

I'd love to see some of these things (and the pit speed limiter) fixed, it could be a good track, and would be nice to see a good representation of an Aussie track. ;)

EDIT: Looking at Stu's AutoSim Analyser results, it seems that the cuts (and pitstops) were not recorded correctly there either.
 
Yeah, I got a stop and go when I was avoiding a stationary car. Technically correct, went straight through T1, the game couldn't know I was avoiding a car. But didn't sit well. No throttle, and with brakes.

First "cut" was with my left rear wheel on the kerb in T10R. One cut I do acknowledge, went over the kerbs in T10R as well.
Later went too fast and hit the wall in the penultimate turn as well. Since I had a bunch of stuff to do, and technically no time to race even, had little motivation to carry on after that :(


Congrats to the winners, and thanks to the organizers, of course. Looking forward to the big finale.
 
Now I have some time to write a few words about Adelaide race.
This race was pretty similar to Nurburgring, except the fact that I finally took 3rd place.
Had strange problems during qualy in third sector and again lost some time on my best laps. But the main thing that I've lost start to Martin and this fact was decisive for me for the whole race. Whole race I tried to overtake Martin, lost tons of time on each lap (from 0,5 to 1 sec), but couldn't pass Martins BMW due to his outstaning skills, BMW engine power and track configuration. Had one unforced mistake, overtook a couple of times Jay and Knut, two contacts with Martin and both times was forced to let him back the position (last time on the finish line). :)
Like most of all races Adelaide was interesting race but again I did some things wrong and complicated my life on the track.

P.S. all the time which I took part in GT Legends on-line races I regret the fact that the developers did not include warm-up session. Each time, right after qualy, without pausing for breath (not talkin about pee :O_o: ), you need to set your race setup and click "Race". One of my bad starts in our league races was in Adelaide, and it was because of that I jumped into the chair at the last second. Oh, at least one or two extra minutes would have been the salvation! :redface:
