Utzer wins, Tifosi suffer
Profiting from the engine failure of teammate Buurlage, Utzer could take his first win of the season. On a track which doesn't allow much overtaking, it was important to make it to the end in the first place. Buurlage led from the start on, until his engine blew up a few laps before the first stops. Hunsley dropped behind Poirier at the start, and Ancevski also lost two places in the opening laps. While the stops were under way, Engberink stopped his car with a broken suspension.
Being on a one stopper Poirier took the lead from Utzer, however not for long as his engine failed soon after. Teammate Lintner didn't have more luck, while the one stoppers were busy making their stops he suffered a gearbox failure. Utzer retook the lead, ahead of Goddard and Hunsley. Wolf, Kederer and Black completed the top 6.
End of the race then for Saidy and McNamara, the Brit had spun, McNamara couldn't react in time and crashed into him. A few laps later it was a double retirement for Ferrari, as Kederer rolled out with a gearbox failure. Utzer kept his lead after his final stop, while Goddard dropped to third behind Hunsley. Prost teammates Ancevski and Wolf in 4th and 6th with Laad between them. Except for Foro retiring with a puncture nothing more happened, giving Utzer his first win in 2000.
