I was hoping 40 mill a year would cover it

That was the inital budgets for Campos/Manor/Lotus pre-2010, they had to go higher. Or, Caterham went up to 60-ish, Virgin-Marussia-Manor to 50-ish and HRT never hit 40 IIRC.
We all saw how much success and time in F1 that brought them.

You need to go 3x that to have a chance to not be last these days.

Or, take that money to IndyCar, and run a competetive 2-car team. If you then add sponsors to your 40 mill a year investment, you'll probably be able to rival Chip Ganassi, Penske, Schmidt and Andretti in IndyCar.

Exactly what Carlin did. For quite a while they were looking at coming into F1, then they simply decided that they could have better chance of success in Indycar. They just couldnt generate the millions required to come into F1 and that's before the car has even turned a wheel.

The only way of F1 thriving again is for all the manufacturers to leave. 20-30 years ago F1 was miles better than it is now, and there was only one manufacturer - Ferrari.
The formula is too expensive and that is solely the fault of the Mercedes/ Renault etc wanting to push their green technology. It will become customer car only in ten years..

"Some" says that Lance Stroll father could buy the team with 3 or 4 years of what they fund for Williams... The great Robert Kubica would/could be the team mate of choice!
Let's hope...

I hope a positive solution is found, for the sake of the 400 staff, as jobs in F1 are few and far between atm.
Liberty need to regulate and cap R&D, it's out of control, a front wing is worth $1.5 mill...it's crazy!

So......... If you were to win the lottery, how much would you need to buy and run the team?

A $200 million a year, at least. That's before sponsorships, prize money or any other income really. From the ground up, over a billion then $200-400 million year over year. Again, before outside income.
