Am I missing something? What's the point in damage and pit repairs? Car seems to suffer no ill effects when very damaged?

The car is much slower in a straight line.

UPDATE: Codemasters say this is not possible. F1 Race Stars will use your (on PC) steam account ID for you anyone else who joins your local multiplayer. You can change the steam ID in settings to make it appear differently.

i had a Microsoft xbox lookalike controller working on the pc demo if that any help
plug it in go to controls and where it says keyboard highlight and move left or right and it shows joypad..
only xbox style controllers works

Also keep in mind that you need to activate it in the main menu, right when you're starting the game. Do not press ENTER when prompted to press a key - use your controller instead.

If you are unable to get the game recognise your controller the best way would be to download xbox 360 controller emulator and emulate it as xbox 360 controller.You can download it from here. Just extract the files to the game directory where your exe file is located and it will configure itself.
