Button retired from the last Grand Prix in Malaysia, having finished ninth in the season’s curtain raiser in Australia, but remains confident McLaren will come back stronger in China next weekend.

‘Everybody in the team has picked themselves up and really attacked addressing our car’s issues,’ he told BBC Sport.

‘I definitely think there’s everything to play for with this championship. I can’t wait to start the fight again.’

It’s been a poor start to the season so far for Button and the McLaren team, who have picked up just four points in the opening two races, with two points apiece for the Brit and team-mate Sergio Perez. But the 2009 world champion says despite the early season disappointments, the team must now look forward.

‘Taking home two points from the first two races obviously wasn’t what we had in mind at the beginning of the year,’ Button added.

‘The important thing for us as a team is to go into the weekend with clear focus, hone our strengths across the sessions and increase our understanding of the car. We know where we’re losing performance, so I think we’re actually all looking forward to seeing just what we can achieve in Shanghai. I think we can have a pretty good race next weekend.’

Three-time world champion Sebastian Vettel currently leads the drivers’ championship on 40 points, nine points clear of Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen.
