2h WEC GT Racing @ Nürburgring VLN - Saturday 11th April 2015

Feb 4, 2012

Unfortunately this round
of the WEC is going to happen in sad circumstances during the first VLN race of the season on the 28th of March the Nissan Nismo GT-R GT3 piloted by fellow simracer and race car driver Jann Mardenborough got air at crest on the Flugplatz section of the Nordschleife and got airborne. The car broke through the catch fan and injured several spectators one of them died later in the medical centre. These events show us, that in todays day and age with all the safety precautions motorsport is still dangerous. In this case the driver could walk away, but the spectators didn't stand a chance.
In the following of the event all fast special classes including the GT3 cars where temporarily baned from competing on the Nordschleife.
We have the fortunate situation to race without putting ours and the lives of others at risk, but I urge every driver this round to keep it clean and put a dab on the brakes before the crest at Flugplatz to show our respect for all racers and fans and their friends and families. Enjoy the race keep it clean, enjoy it. This one isn't aout winning. It is about having a good time and have no crashes even though we will survive them.

Read the pit entry rules in the following posts very carefully - failure to comply will result in a penalty!

Driver/Team notes:
  • Driver swapping is allowed
  • Each car can have 1-2 drivers (Driver Swap Tutorial)
  • All cars must have their headlights on at all times (additional flashing is encouraged when overtaking / lapping)
  • Blue flag: signals a faster car is behind you. Caution is required, but moving over is not.
  • The faster car is expected to look for a sensible passing opportunity. They are responsible for initiating a safe pass, but the slower car is equally as responsible for allowing an overtake to occur safely. Stay on the racing line, leaving plenty of room for the overtaking car, and do not make sudden / unexpected movements.
  • When lapping: straights are preferred over corners; corner exits are preferred over corner entries.
  • Slower cars are expected to keep to their racing line and cooperate with safe passes. Moving out of the way is not advised, as it leads to unpredictable situations.
  • Faster cars may flash their headlights to indicate that they are about to make a pass.
  • Patience is key!
Race information:
  • Remember to test pit-stops and driver swaps (Driver Swap Tutorial)
  • Ensure that all drivers in the team have driven some laps in traffic, and different track conditions
  • Whilst not racing or preparing for a driver swap, drivers are not permitted to be on the server; timing software will be provided so that team members are able to monitor the race
  • Presence on TS is not mandatory, but is recommended in case communication with drivers or teams is required
Starting procedure:
  • Standing start
  • At the beginning of the race, once you select "Race" your car will immediately spawn directly on the grid in your qualifying position
  • Your tyres and brakes will be cold - BE CAREFUL
  • Do not take risks, or attempt to make over-ambitious overtakes - it's a 2 hour race, don't ruin it for yourself or others
  • Ensure that you practise standing starts before the race - please only do this in the pit lane, away from other cars (be aware what's around you)
  • Mod edit: Please ensure you treat other drivers with respect at the start. When was the last time a "brave" move under brakes on lap 1 sector 1 made your race (especially in a 120 minute event)? The drivers in front outqualified you and probably put quite some effort into practice. Respect please. Adhesion over ambition. Turn 1 is tricky.
How to sign up:
  • Name all drivers for your car
  • You can always add or remove drivers to your car later on
  • Your final line-up should be clear 24 hours ahead of the event

Read this part very carefully - failing to comply will result in a penalty!

1. Normal pit stop (how you should do it):
After you exit the last corner of the Nordschleife keep it on the right side of the track you will see a white line coming up. Keep the car right of the white line, but close to it and enter the pit by going between the cones and barrier on the left and the tire stack on the right. Bring the car down to the pit speed limiter before the white pit entry line.

2. Damage on GP track - Lap 1 emergency pit stop:
It's almost inevitable that an incident will occur between some drivers in the first few corners. If you have damage it is advised to enter the pits from the GP track, so that you don't drive the whole Nordschleife with a damaged car - the circuit is lengthy, undulating, tight and twisty, which can be a danger for you and others if you are carrying damage. To enter the pits from the GP track go a bit slower through the NGK chicane. Make sure there is no one close behind you, who could get caught out by your slower mid-corner speed. After the chicane keep it to the right and immediately enter the pit lane, so you don't get in the way of other cars. You will cross Start/Finish in the pits, but it will not count as a lap in the race session, so your first official racelap will start once you exit the pits.

3. Emergency pit stop during the race:
You may forget to enter the pits from the Nordschleife and you might be short on fuel or have damage, so you might want to make an emergency stop as described in chapter 2. The only difference now is that there are cars that may be entering the pits coming from the Nordschleife. They will be going at speed at the point where the Nordschleife and the GP pit lane meet up, and the cars on the Nordschleife have the right of way. It is your responsibility to not cause any danger to others when taking this route. You should check your car position indicator, look to the left, bring the car to a stop, and maybe even take the grass for the first part, so you can see oncoming cars from a greater distance. This route should only be taken if a lap around the Nordschleife would be dangerous, else it is forbidden. If you cause an incident during this attempt to make an emergency stop it will be handled as a breach of the golden RD rules and will most probably result in a 30 day race ban.

A bad quali means I can go forwards in the race.

I had a go in a non apex Porsche and I think there are some issues with the VLN layout, especially coming out of the pits. It's like you're hitting invisible objects in pit lane. Not tried it with any other cars yet.

Beside the above, i tried the server and i got a problem. With the Porsche i reached the speed limiter at 270 km/h due the not adjustable gears. Offline i noticed that in the car options (in the car choose menu before you join the track - look picture) you have the possibility to have adjustable gears. Could we open this option also for the server, because otherwise some cars are not really driveable on Nord. Also Steering lock could opened as well in my opinion.

Yes, that must be a server setting. Gear ratio upgrades were available in the last race and they should be in this one as well.
