1080p on a 1440p monitor at full refresh?

I want to get a 1440p monitor, but I'm concerned that my system (I7-10700 and Radeon 5700XT) might not support that resolution for all games. I know you can run lower-res games on higher-res monitors, but does anyone know if you still get the full refresh rate in that situation? In other words, is the refresh rate for a given monitor consistent whatever resolution picture you're feeding it?

The biggest issue is probably more that it'll look awful.

You'd be better off with a 4k monitor and running it at 1080p.

Yes, tried my 1440 at 1080. Didn't look good as pixels are nearly 50% larger than they should be.

10700 and 5700xt against a 1440p monitor. I think you will be able to push the pixels just fine. I run a 3800x with 5700xt on a 3440x1440p Ultrawide, with most game set to maximum, and drop if I want/need higher FPS. I like to keep my FPS at ~100 (monitor is 100hz freesync)for most games if I can.

Edit: I want to add that gaming on an Ultrawide is glorious . The only time I have run into issues is when wanting to run a game with triple monitor setup with different resolutions, but that is to be expected.

If you are willing to stick with 1080p and want a really 'clean' picture with loads of features...and have a Costco card, go get the LG 27GL63T-B for $179.99 down from $249.99.
It is currently on sale.
I just installed mine yesterday.
It has a very crisp picture and very defined images with HDR selected.
I was initially looking at 2560/144Hz monitors but I couldn't justify the higher than average price tag.
That 27GL63T-B has G-Sync and Free-Sync, HDR, 1 ms MBR and a whole host of other features.
It is also an IPS panel.
A 'win' in my book.

Refresh rate isn't an issue. It will run normally.

The reason is the interpolation has an odd multiplier. Stretching 1080 to 1440 means each pixel display 0.75 pixels of the game's output.
Can't look good sadly...

Only scenario where this works well is 1080p on a 4k monitor as you simply take each pixel and display it on 4 pixels of the 4k monitor.

I agree with the others though, that the 5700xt should be fine for 2560x1440! Maybe some lower settings but imo worth the sharpness and clarity!

Absolutely! It looked fine when I moved 2m away from my monitor!
Still better than 1080p from 1m distance

Depends on the scaling quality of the monitor. 3840x1080 on a 5120x1440 screen looks exactly the same as 1080p on a 4k screen on my two displays.

Games which can hit a minimum of 60fps I run native and everything else 75% or 1080p x2.
