The 2022 Formula One season is behind us and want to hear your pick or picks for which driver impressed you the most this year.

The revised Formula 1 regulations entering the 2022 season were intended to allow cars to follow closer and encourage more competition between the cars and teams after an eight-year reign by Mercedes. And while the cars certainly had improved ability to follow closely, the leveling of the competition was harder to spot.

An early season push from Ferrari quickly fizzled out, and the Red Bull cars led by Max Verstappen cruised to one of the most dominant seasons in F1 history. Despite this, there were impressive performances throughout the season from Verstappen and many other drivers. We want to hear from you who impressed you the most. Here are some ideas:

Max Verstappen – The obvious choice; Verstappen became the first driver in F1 history to achieve 14 wins in a season. Verstappen’s presence on the podium in 2022 seemed a foregone conclusion entering nearly every race, regardless of track type or weather. Verstappen now has two drivers’ championships to his name and looked unstoppable all season long.

George Russell – Russell would have had countless valid excuses if he had performed far worse in his first season at Mercedes than he did. Few people expected #63 to match his teammate, who happens to be the winningest driver in F1 history, but at the time of this writing Russell is ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the standings. This season included Russell earning his first victory and proving he belongs at one of the premier teams in the sport.

Lando Norris – Like Russell, Norris outperformed a teammate with a greater career win total. The disparity in pace between Norris and teammate Daniel Ricciardo in 2022 makes it difficult to assess the potential pace of their McLaren. Was Norris driving the wheels off a car that had no business in the top eight? Or was Ricciardo underperforming in an upper-mid tier car? The answer is likely somewhere in between, but undoubtedly Norris looked great, and even split the top teams in the standings through much of the early season.

Kevin Magnussen - Before the 2022 season started, K-Mag didn't even have a seat in F1. Fate intervened, and Magnussen ended up as the full-time teammate of Mick Schumacher at Haas. His 25 points so far in 2022 exceeds the expectations of most F1 fans coming into the season, and is double the current total of Schumacher. Magnussen also earned a pole position for the sprint race in Brazil.

Who is your driver of the year? One of the above? Someone else? Leave a comment below and be sure to vote in the poll.

This forum has become so toxic… instead of praising the best driver, some people take every opportunity to bash certain drivers.

Back on topic… Max is the obvious choice, but like Lewis before, was driving the best car this year. So my vote goes to… Lando Norris.

Alonso for me. I just love his motivation. At 41, he's still hungry and, most importantly, he still gets the most out of his car. Just a real, old school racer.

I have to give it to Magnussen.

- Rejoins the F1 grid on short notice
- 5th place in first race back
- Consistently makes the son of Michael look like an amateur
- Wins pole position in a bloody Haas of all cars

Not to mention that he got screwed over 3 times by the stewards this season yet still outscored both Alpha Tauri's and Stroll.

We may never know the real dynamics inside a team, but from the outside, I admire Russel for being ahead of his star team mate most of the time, in his rookie year with Mercedes. And I hope Checo can beat Max next year.

clearly Latifi. Because... well ...he still shows up to work. Because sheesh that has to be rough

If I had voted before the Sao Paulo meltdown, I would have voted for Max. He has been a class above the rest and his sheer speed and ease at which he has won some races (spin in Hungary and from 14th in Belgium being the most impressive) has been worthy of a two-time champion.

However, as everyone else has been pretty much fallible at various times, I went for everyone's favourite substitute Nyck De Vries. He's collected all the Infinity Stones by driving for pretty much every team this season and put in a master drive in his Monza cameo. Deserves his chance with a full time drive next season.

No surprise Verstappen is not leading the poll, since he is a little whining prick like his dad.
He is annoying sometimes, and I was not happy with what happened to Checo, but I gotta give him something. He is authentic, something that is severely lacking everywhere, where everyone is trying too hard to be liked. It's almost refreshing seeing that, and as he didn't do anything illegal, just questionable, and he clearly knows he will pay the price of being disliked, game on.

  1. The season isn't over yet :o
  2. Lando Norris has a very vocal fanbase, and had many calling him the driver of the year in 2021. I thought it was ridiculous considering he only finished in the top 6 once in the last 12 races in solid machinery, easily outscored by Gasly (my driver of the year) in worse machinery, but I'd be inclined to agree that he's been solid performer in 2022.
  3. Russell was absolutely phenomenal. He and Bottas are my favorite drivers, so I'm biased, but if he beats Hamilton in their first year together, that's fantastic. The way in which he did it, being solid, consistent while also being level-headed and allegedly a fantastic leader and team member... chapeau.
  4. I can't stand Verstappen, but I begrudgingly have to give him the nod. Leclerc is the only legitimate contender.
  5. Alonso currently leads the poll and has 22.6% of the vote to Ocon's 0.8%. Alonso currently trails Ocon in the standings. Yes, there are a few mitigating circumstances, and I could argue that Alonso was better than Ocon, but I don't think it merits a 28:1 ratio, and I certainly feel a bit odd about having the winner of this poll not being able to match their teammate. He was entertaining, for sure, and he had good pace, but... he wasn't on Leclerc or Verstappen's level, let's be frank here.
