The year is slowly coming to an end. 2022 has been a year of many ups and downs. Both overall and in sim racing. So let's take a look back at what everyone's year has been like. Today, we're asking the question: What's your most played sim in 2022?

DISCLAIMER:
Before anyone complains, this is a large list. It includes some titles that may not be considered "hardcore sims". But that doesn't matter. We are all racing fans at heart. So let's stay united.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let me tell you a bit about my personal sim racing experiences this year.

I have come to the conclusion that my time spent on the rig has decreased compared to 2020 and 2021. Out of the games I played this year, RaceRoom takes the crown. But I have barely touched it in the 2nd half of the year. The reason is simple: the league I raced in now switched to ACC.

Therefore, my 2nd most played sim is ACC since that switch. And there I have been mostly streaming the races. So all of my ACC "seat time" is actually commentating time.

rFactor 2 is 3rd on my list of sims. And the playtime was almost exclusively in Q1 of 2022.

Personally, I just hope I get a bit more free time in 2023 to do what I love once again: Racing.

What have your experiences been this year? Tell us a bit about your sim racing story in 2022 in the comments below!

The results of the poll indicate that Assetto Corsa is still the favorite simracing game, years ahead of the competitors. That's quite impressive, considering its age. I bet the next year the results will be similar.
AC will probably always be the most played due to the low entry price and the modding community. But I think that the pendulum is shifting towards RF2 and I feel that they are in perfect postion to rule the roost with no real competion for years to come. Still in development with mods...it doesn't get any better than that. So let's go AC modders, challenge yourselves and mod for RF2 :)

People think such a small poll is indicative of the norm?
You would need minimum 10% of all people that sim.
Of course on a sim site where the high proportion of downloads are for AC you are going to have high numbers for it.
Poll at Steam would be nothing like AC 40%, in your dreams maybe.

P.S. 10% for rF2 sounds about right because only 1 in 10 can appreciate physics with dynamic FFB.

No matter where this poll would be: I bet AC will be everywhere on no 1. It's just the endless choice of mods for this title.

if you except AMS2 (which was actually less popular than rF2 and raceroom in 2022 and four to six times less played than ACC) and iracing (which is not played via steam), this poll is indeed indicative.
in fact, in 2022 AC1 broke its own all time popularity more than 4 times.

numbers dont lie...

On Steam AC does have top figures for a modded sim ( 4,000+ ) but if it was 40% then iRacing with 6,000+ must be other 60%.

You see the problem, when 16,000+ people play Beam ( a modded sim ) which is 400% more. Beam got what 2% most played here yet it's 400% more played then AC on Steam. So if you did bet me you would have lost Beam is the most played modded sim.

All I said is it would not be 40% of all users on Steam, I am right, really I don't care either way. ;) I just used it as a lead in to my rF2 joke...at least 1 person got.

as i said iracing is not on steam. and its way more popular that this RD poll says. and i agree is more popular than AC1.
beam is IMHO not a racing sim.
the most surprizing result in this RD poll is AMS2, by far.
AC1 numbers (in real life and in this poll) are both impressive and expected.
BTW my most played sim in 2022 is ACC

Doubtful. There are zero drift cars (unless you count all the old S397 GT3 cars), zero touges, and very few track day servers for rF2. Plus the player numbers are already going back down after the initial LFM hype.

All these fancy numbers from steam and recorded on line sessions mean zip in the real world,
I'm sure that many more folk just fire up a race game (perhaps one of those mentioned, perhaps not) and have a play, this is supported by the fact that 80% of GT7 players don't play Multiplayer (but are recorded being that it has to be connected) and not all folks play GT7, and not everyone in the world loves steam, personally, I abhor it.
But the question was aimed at the members of this site and not steam, so really how popular anything is on steam is irrelevant.

There, that's sent the bees into the worm can
GTR2 rulz

I totally forgot about the AC drift and touge commumities... What was I thinking, no game stands a chance against AC!

I know iRacing isn't popular here, but since they are not represented on Steam, I thought it might be worth adding the following:

Each season is 12-13 weeks long or about 3 months.

This is just for Road races and shows an average of about 20 race starts per 108,548 drivers over a 12 week season.

That "should" mean about 80 race starts per year on average for 100+K drivers.

Of interest is that the "Covid Surge" didn't immediately evaporate and it appears most people stayed. Also surprising is that the first season of 2022 saw the highest peak rather than an earlier time during peak Covid.

The fact that iRacing is so low and AMS2 so high on the list tells you that this poll is only worth it for the RD userbase, you can't take it as legit for the simracing community. And I say this with AMS2 as my main sim nowadays.

So then, do you feel that it could be used as an indicator for 2023 newsfeeds among the Race Department scribes? and perhaps even to prioritise marketing opportunities... you know, third party and all that.

To be honest, I have no idea. I was just pointing out that the results of this poll clearly don't reflect the simracing community as a whole, just RD trends.

It was really made as a 'tongue in cheek' quip ;)

That's because users on this site historically hate iRacing for whatever reason. As a result, iracers just don't go here for information as it's clearly biased towards AC. I have all the major sims and e.g. for me those thousands of poor quality mods (mostly) of AC are of no interest. Only thing that matters is online racing and you can't beat iRacing there, at least not at the moment.

Doesn't bother me any. There are too many things that I like about iRacing for me to consider anything else and that's fine (for me). If I'm in a room of people who hate iRacing, life goes on. I just don't see those when I'm in game :) I can still get along with them here chatting about other stuff.

Live and let live :) It's all good!

I think that our small niche would benefit a lot more if people would give a constructive criticism instead of just being fanatics of a specific game no matter what (why would you even do that, there is no benefit unless you are a paid shill lol).
No game is perfect, and my general gripe lately is what Motorsport games is doing, that's exactly the opposite of what we as simracers need.

it's funny but the steam chart is not saying that at all, here the real order :

1) iRacing has always the top number players....Forza 7 too on xbox/PC, GT7 PS5/4
2) after you have AC
3) BeamNG.drive
4) F1 2022
5) then ACC
6) then Dirt rally 2.0
7) then rFactor 2
8) then Raceroom
9) and last AMS2

That's the REAL order of the number players....If I count GT7 and Forza7, AMS2 is not in the top 10.

Are you even remotely suggesting that iRacing as a company sees no criticism from their players?

Let's be very clear on this subject.

1. iRacing gets LOTS of criticism both constructive and non-constructive from their user base and they are continually evolving their product. I just wouldn't expect them to look for guidance on their product from this forum and I think that would be for some extremely obvious reasons, right?

2. As a result of the anti-iRacing population here, people who enjoy iRacing frequently end up being put on the defensive here.

I have never suggested in any way, shape, or form that iRacing was perfect. iRacing knows that too, but there is no point making constructive criticism here when they have plenty of other places to recieve this feedback.
