What is The Goal For rFactor 2 Online in 2024?

Studio 397 revived rFactor 2’s online mode for players in October 2023 with a new ranked mode. But what can players expect in 2024? And what’s the goal of its new online mode? Player numbers have dwindled and content has been repeating itself

What’s The Goal of rFactor 2 Online?

I think the goal of rFactor 2 Online is simple. Create a reliable and structured online mode and ranking system that could be implemented into Le Mans Ultimate when the title is released next month.

Studio 397 put a lot of effort into the rFactor 2 version, which is clear. But the final goal of its ranking system is more than likely to see how its community would react to an iRacing style ranked mode.

The Motorsport Games licensing fiasco had a sizable impact on rFactor 2’s game content. The loss of the BTCC and IndyCar licenses is a prime example – the BTCC races on the service have been hastily renamed ‘Touring Cars’. Studio 397 doesn’t appear to be releasing any more base game content, nor DLC packs, for rFactor 2. Le Mans Ultimate is just over a month away and the pressure is on to deliver.

The goal of rFactor 2 Online was always to run a prolonged test to see if their format worked over a longer period. This is hinted at by the nomenclature. The service is called ‘rFactor 2 Online’, but it’s powered by ‘RaceControl’. Why have a separate name for the service and the tech, if the tech wasn’t going to be used elsewhere?

The lack of fresh base game content and repeated combinations has slowly declined users’ interest. But this is far from the end for rFactor 2 Online. Studio 397 won’t let their new mode die after just a few months. The dedicated rFactor 2 player base will utilise the variety in their sim even when Le Mans Ultimate is released.

What Could We See From rFactor 2 in 2024?

Don’t be fooled, Le Mans Ultimate will be Studio 397’s big push in 2024. We hope rFactor 2 won’t be forgotten about, but new cars and tracks are unlikely in the first half of 2024. A consistent update to the online mode and any bug fixes will surely be present.

The re-establishment of lost licenses seems almost impossible at this point. But once Le Mans Ultimate releases, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that rFactor 2 could get a sizable GT3 update. More cars from series that have nothing to do with Motorsport Games would also go a long way with the community to build back that trust. An expansion to the karting offerings or even something new like racing trucks or junior formula series would go a long way.

In terms of tracks, there is a possibility that rFactor 2 could receive updated versions of tracks already in the base game from Le Mans Ultimate. An update to Spa and the Nürburgring would be a huge addition to the title.

rFactor 2 has limited potential with the content on offer. But the end is far from near. Despite Le Mans Ultimate being released in just over a month, Studio 397 has released nothing official about stopping the development of rFactor 2. Le Mans Ultimate will be received in a similar way to Assetto Corsa Competizione. It’s a single-discipline title, and some players will have no interest in WEC or sportscars in general. This isn’t the end for rFactor 2, we hope...

If LMU will be successful, would it be possible that S397/MSG only concentrates on LMU anymore?

For me there is a big ? after Feb 20th.

Will it matter ? Lots still use gmotor2.0 sims including AMS then pCars and AC.
They are all dead ?
Nothings changed, they still work the same, drive the same and people are still improving them every day.
Well not pCars but you get my drift.

Even if easy, S397 never will use a ripped mod from a S397 game in the Race Control, also it will be a no-no here on RD by the rules or even in the steam workshop... Leagues may use, but no relevant event will do so. Those models probably will fly in other sims where the community is more used to ripped content anyway.
Thats funny to say the least, maybe official places that respect other sims content like RD and the devs themselves may abid by that but, all the laser scanned tracks from AC1 got ripped into rF2 before S397 started pumping DLC tracks ... The only track i remember being ripped from the original rF2 content into AC was estoril (and what a screaming it was )... every other stuff flew on the oposite direction :) , probably the same that screamed on the first case enjoyed properly laser scanned tracks for the first time alot!

That's very interesting. When did they have time to make a new engine? And if not their own, which one? Mad...? ))
That does sound like a bit of a waste of money that they don't have?
They didn't make a new one. They went "full update" mode in the rF2 version, changing stuff without worrying about compatibility with previous content. Kinda rF1 to rF2 difference but I'm guessing it's bigger changes so porting stuff wont be as easy/possible
Keeping previous content compatible is exactly why progress in rF2 was so slow

This rF2 online development was clearly a beta version to what is coming in LMU, imo.
If S397 does it all right and bring ELMS and AsLMS, LMU could easily even replace ACC for GT3 series when they add the 2024 season.
For that reason I believe rF2 is done.

For me rF2 is king.

S397 ingame content is always good quality and fun!
It's hard to not appreciate the driving experience, especially with newer official content. If they've managed to elevate the user experience on all fronts, bring standardized FFB performance across all of the vehicles (strength, feel, etc) and maintain or even improve the driving experience with LMU...I'll be an extremely happy camper.

I find it so funny and sad to read comments from people making fun of rfactor 2!
It's funny because these people compare the quality of the simulator by the number of its users.
Dear rfactor 2 haters, I don’t want to upset you, But if a good simulator were considered the one with more users, then forza and gran turismo, what can I say, even trackmania, would take first places on the podium...
To yours Unfortunately, this works quite the opposite, the closer the simulator gets to the reality of driving, the more and more difficult the settings and implementation of connections with electronics and hardware become, the more the game turns into a professional sport, the more it moves away from simple gamepad control towards professional hardware, the more By doing so, it filters out large categories of users, which means that the flow of funds into the development of very heavy car models and tracks is reduced.
And at this moment I feel sad, because at this point in time, the development of car simulators is becoming similar to the development of sound technologies.
Wamely, the water becomes just as cloudy, similar to those times when speakers, amplifiers and players began to lose demand from people, as if suddenly everyone had wooden ears, monophonic speakers appeared on sale that play poor quality using the bluetooth codec, from MP3 players , which cut off all the quality from the music, and all this sound comes out of small plastic speakers that have become rare to even be stereophonic.

This is exactly how I see the attitude towards rFactor 2 from a large percentage of sim racing users.
They have the opportunity to use a simulation masterpiece that was written by people who were fans of motorsports, cars, racing and who wrote this engine IN that era!
I want to explain to you that no matter how much the engine looks like pasta, no one will ever write it from the beginning, months, years, work, improvements, corrections are invested in it, which simply cannot be simply sat down and written from the beginning, but can only be rewritten by deleting pasta. and that’s why I’m not worried about the fate of rFactor 2, namely its engine, since it will always live and collect experience!
And the experience of time cannot be replaced by anything.
Even if it is abandoned or the company that develops it closes, it will be continued by fans and other people who understand its quality.
A simple example for you is the rally simulator RBR, the quality and physics of which still cannot be surpassed! and why? But because its creators were a real racer, and were always there when creating the engine, and even when he left this life, the quality and experience of the work that was done has not been surpassed by any big company so far!

rF2 is an all purpose sim.
Modding allows new tracks and cars to be added as the Steam Workshop shows.

As @Will Mazeo has suggested I'd imagine that some of the LMU development effort has gone into locking down the base game and DLC so that modding isn't possible.
So a changed engine that only works with MSG supplied DLC cars and tracks.

Don't forget that LMU is intended to be on consoles too. That won't be possible if you can stick on any mod you want from Steam.

Perhaps LMU will become rF3.
Change the recent rF2 DLC content to be compatible with the upgraded engine.

With my business head on it really doesn't make sense to have a product that I bought almost four years in a Steam sale that has ongoing development but hasn't cost me a single extra penny...

The real question is how much has revenue has come in from people renting server time? That's where the profit will be with rF2, if there's any to be had.

I think that's what 95% of people who have reached gold in rF2s online safety rating have been thinking since they got gold in their safety rating...

What is the goal...?

Because once you reach gold in SR, the only goal is to keep it...

For the other 5% it was always just public lobby style racing with a schedule and better racing as a result of the content unlocked with the higher safety rating...

Given MSGS's struggles I don't think we'll see anything major soon, maybe the first wave of career mode ideas that S397 had before having their layoffs and focussing on LMU to get that out... But when? Unless more are hired it could be after the DLC for LMU is finished...

As much promise as rF2 had in it's first few years under ISI the entire time under MSGS has been a complete case of 1 step forwards and 2 steps back... It still has some amazing modders who make the physics model sing... But each one of those step backs from MSGS is a reason to have caution with anything that rF2 has left to promise...

It is my favourite to drive out of the current titles, Raceroom is close but it doesn't have the tyres that can be available in rF2 from the right mod teams... But I have to be honest about my concerns about it's future until there's some positive news like a new publisher buying out MSGS...

I’ve really enjoyed racing the radical online in rf2, but the track selections aren’t great and it’s always the short layout of each track. I understand they want to use free content for rookies but I’m sure people would pay for a few newer tracks seeing as the ranked mp is free.
I’ve been an Iracing diehard for the last 12 years but this is the first year that I haven’t renewed because they’ve over saturated the content and instead of having more choice of series there’s actually less because they’ve spread the player base too thin. This has resulted in only a few series being well populated as everyone wants races with lots of splits to get good racing.
I’ve always liked more niche series like the radical, fr2.0, star Mazda, indypro and the usf, these series always had engaged communities but they have all died off because of the constant influx of new cars.
I think any sim that can put out a robust ranked multiplayer will clean up because the simracing community is desperate for an Iracing alternative. It’s pretty crazy that in 2024, in a game genre that is perfect for ranked mp, that Iracing is light years ahead of the competition despite being one of the oldest sims. Maybe it’s a justification for the high cost of Iracing if none of their competitors can put out a similar mp product for less.
That's a good point on the iRacing series. I've found it very hard to find a series I'm interested in, that is well populated. iRacing its supposed to be the one sim where you can get multiplayer action at any time of the day, but that is not really true. You can for the big GT3/GT4/IMSA series, and rookies is well populated, but none of the more niche series are populated outside of peak time. If you want to race touring cars for example, you are better off going and playing AC and the LFM series.

i think rf2 has the best experience in simracing at the moment. It’s old, not polished, not user friendly, but when you are on car is the best. And the graphic are not bad at full speed eheheheh
I play every sims, noone does me feeling the connection with the track like rF2
