RaceRoom DTM Season 2013: A Modern Classic

RaceRoom-Classic-DTM-2013.jpg
Accurate historic seasons are hard to portray in RaceRoom, but modern classics are certainly possible – like the RaceRoom DTM seasons 2013 to 2016.

One of RaceRoom‘s big strengths is its roster of cars, including numerous historic vehicles. However, period-correct circuits to race the cars on are amiss – something we were wondering about a few months ago already. For instance, the entire 1992 DTM grid is in the sim, but four tracks of that year’s calendar are missing. And those that are still around look distinctly different today.

Recreating historic seasons is therefore hardly possible to a satisfactory degree for many racing history buffs. Granted, this is not the focus of RaceRoom, so expecting this to be possible might be a bit much to ask. However, it is possible to recreate modern classics with the RaceRoom DTM seasons available.

RaceRoom DTM Seasons: Plenty Of Choice

In addition to the 1992 grid, the sim features the 2013 to 2016 seasons, plus the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. Furthermore, the Mercedes DTM cars of 1995, 2003 and 2005 can also be raced. Although it may be a stretch to call the 2013 to 2016 seasons historic just yet, they can be considered modern classics. Many DTM fans still do not agree with the switch to GT3 cars from 2021 onwards.

Modern DTM cars before the switch were not really touring cars anymore, but still rather popular silhouette racers. For 2019 and 2020, the DTM/Class 1 regulations were unified with those of the Japanese Super GT series. However, by 2017, the grid had shrunk to just 18 cars. The GT3 switch saw it expand again, with as many as 28 cars taking to the grid in 2023.

The RaceRoom DTM seasons work well as a throwback since all the tracks are already there. And in the last 7 to 10 years, they have not really changed much. As a result, recreating those seasons in a believable way is perfectly possible.

As you would expect, DTM races at the Norisring are tight battles and very exciting.

DTM, But 10 Years Ago

As an example for this, we picked the oldest modern RaceRoom DTM season available. The DTM 2013 pack in the sim has 22 cars available. Three manufacturers in Audi, BMW and Mercedes battle it out for title glory. The real championship title went to Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller after ten races at nine circuits that year. DTM ventured to the Moscow Raceway for the first time in 2013. The other international rounds were held at Brands Hatch, the Red Bull Ring and Zandvoort.

Going back 10 years to relive the 2013 season is fairly easy in RaceRoom. Although there is no pre-defined championship, the highly adjustable rule settings allow players to do so in a heartbeat. Just select the DTM 2013 rule preset from the drop-down menu and you are good to go!

When selecting your opponents, make sure to leave out the car you intend to drive yourself. To have the full grid, 21 opponents need to be set.

Of course, this is a singleplayer championship, so you may be asking about how well the AI actually races. The good news: They are very capable! In the races we tried, they were not afraid of trading paint, much in the spirit of the series – but they did not overdo it. Instead, we had some very enjoyable battles. The AI even moved to the inside to defend when trying to set up a pass and, in turn, took advantage of any gap we may have left.

The RaceRoom AI works well in the 2013 DTM cars.

RaceRoom DTM Season 2013: What To Buy

Assuming you do not own any additional content, the cheapest way to recreate the 2013 DTM season in RaceRoom is to buy the 2013 DTM pack in combination with the European Track Pack. The former will set you back €3,98, the latter costs €29,93 at the time of writing. Buying the tracks separately would cost €32,82, so this combination is your best bet.

Dtm 2020 is my favorite car, just cause it has the lastest tyre and suspension, hyped for v6

Unfortunately, the aero model for these cars broke years ago and I'm not sure they ever fixed it. Maybe in the next physics update...

How did that manifest itself? I admittedly hadn't touched these cars before, but they felt fine when I tried them - good fun, and a noticeable DRS effect :)

This is the kind of sim content we need: a complete grid with fitting tracks and rule sets. Not random cars and tracks dotted all over the world.
Mind you, it was sold as a standalone game back in the day. Would you pay full price for a DTM-only sim with a single season and around 10 tracks, most of them German?

^ At some point DTM, WTCC, ADAC Experience seasonal DLCs occupied their own tab under R3E, so they acted as standalone game which could also be bought as so (they still can, but will be added as a pack of cars/tracks*). After they merged everything into the main UI as regular content, the current available rulesets were a compromise, but not every rule transited, iirc like specific DTM event tyre set limitations for the respective years.

*The now unlisted DTM Experience 2013 Steam DLC keys (so as 14'), including all cars and tracks can still be bought on well known official/licensed stores for 13-16€ while they last, just check on isthereanydeal (it wont list cheaper gray market sites, best left of this conversation for various reasons).
Unfortunately, these Experience DLCs are failing to show in the cart after added on raceroomstore.com. Only the DTM 13 Experience physical dvd offline lite version+steam bundle seems to work, but shipping is prohibitive outside DE/GER.

IIRC the default setup (and any reasonable setup you'd come up with) has tons of missing downforce so you leave seconds on the table. With an exaggerated eSports-style setup with stuff set at max you can do much better, but that might not be a big issue in offline racing.

That does sound rather broken
However, I did not really do much to the base setup, basically just took a little wing and fuel out, and they felt roughly as I would have expected. Keeping up with the AI was no problem at 100+%, so taking that into account, the issue you described might have been fixed in the meantime.

This is really cool! I do have R3E and I mess around with it every so often, but one thing I've always liked is the unconventional/unique cars available. Having stuff like early 2010s DTM and WTCC in there was always pretty cool and out there compared to other games. And funnily enough, you mention the 1992 DTM set - I planned on doing a 'back to the future' series with those at one point, racing the 1992 cars on the 2022 calendar/tracks, or as close to! Maybe with some 'fantasy' rounds at places like Bathurst, because...well, why not xD

Speaking of DTM: is there a more-or-less faithful mod for AC depicting early-mid 2000s DTM? The cars felt very different in 'Toca Race Driver 2' to usual stuff in sims, with quite stiff suspension and swift turning. Like, they raced on Adria with the 460 hp engines.

I picked up several '01 and '03 cars by ACTK and 101Creative, but the suspension feels simultaneously way too stiff at times and too grippy: dunno if it's how it's supposed to be or it's what the authors gathered from TDR2—particularly since questionable suspension feel is often a sign of an undercooked mod. Almost can't feel what's happening to the chassis and the wheels, while the car has no problems even without TC in sharp turns.

Is it finally playable? As a father-simracer the time for driving is less and less and it cannot be wasted with abandoned contents. :D

Is Oscherleben on RR3?

Yup! All of the tracks listed above are :) I think that's true for most (if not all) of the modern DTM seasons included.

Before Oschersleben came to iRacing, the RaceRoom version is what I used to get my dad up to speed on where we were going when we attended the ADAC GT Masters season opener there in 2022 :D
