Project CARS is Officially Dead

Project CARS, the project started by sim racing business veteran Ian Bell, will not live to see another game. After 3 games, Slightly Mad Studios announced the demise of the franchise today.

Slightly Mad Studios posted to their Twitter the following picture today:

This message announced the imminent demise of the Project CARS franchise, a once shining star on the sim racing horizon.

Currently, it is unclear what exactly led the studio to drop the development of the next game. What's for certain for many people, however, is that this is only one more nail in the coffin of, what many sim racers have seen for a long time, a waste of a franchise.

What started out as an enjoyable introduction for some to the sim racing world, became an arcade title by the most recent and third instalment.

And as seen by the message above, it seems like there will not be a fourth instalment coming.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, an EA spokesperson said: "Today we announced internally an update to our racing portfolio. Following an evaluation of the next Project CARS title and its longer-term growth potential, we have made the decision to stop further development and investment for the franchise.

"Decisions like these are very hard, but allow us to prioritise our focus in areas where we believe we have the strongest opportunity to create experiences that fans will love. We are focusing on our strengths in our racing portfolio, particularly licensed IP and open-world experiences, and expanding our franchises to be more socially-led with long-term live services that will engage global communities. Games are at the heart of sports and racing entertainment, and with shifting fan expectations, we recognise the need to evolve our games beyond pure play, providing experiences for fans to also watch, create and connect with their friends.

"We are working with everyone impacted by this decision to place them into suitable roles across our EA Sports and racing portfolio, as well as other parts of EA, wherever we can. Our priority now is on providing as much support as possible to our people through this transition."

Personally, I first started sim racing with a wheel on Project Cars 2, before switching to Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione. So this announcement doesn't go past me without any emotion.

But more importantly, what do you think of this announcement? What is your history with the Project CARS franchise? Let us know in the comments down below!

At the very beginning, you could pay money for the first pre builds or alphas, or for the development of Project Cars in general and then you were a member, and then Project cars came about, I got back more than the money I paid back then, even though my PC wasn't in the approach was suitable for it and jerked like hell, I really wanted to be part of it and it was a great time.

And it was because of EA, that all F1 games had to be removed from the steam store and only keep 21 & 22
2020 still available... and overpriced :roflmao:

The issue with F1 is that, apparently (because the last real simulation F1 game was GPL and I don't buy F1 simcades or arcades, so can't say what is happening, only see other trustworthy players feedback), is already loosing a lot of quality. EA usually do that with their "recent acquired" studios. Is something that ALWAYS happened because of "reasons". EA destroyed a good chunk of amazing franchises, as tommaze listed below:

RIP Project CARS 2015-2022
Another Series Killed by EA
In Memorial
Command & Conquer
Simcity
Medal Of Honor
Burnout
Ultima
Dead Space
Battlefield
etc.
Also Mass Effect, Dragon Age (both are "zombie franchises" now) and all Janes Combat Simulation series... and a huge "etc" lol

I started simracing with PC1 and then PC2 and still like and often play them because both work great in VR and the latest hardware. PC3 on the other hand I feel was a total customer rip off, cheaply put together to have a new title when selling the company. That leaves a bad taste behind for me.

What a joke of a man. He spent years bashing EA and claiming how they tried to kill the SMS, but in the end sold the Studio and the franchise, perfectly knowing what was going to happen to them.
Freaking ridiculous. Disgusting.
He sold to Codemasters, the acquisition could have lead to some nice rally games.
Then Codemasters sold to EA.
At that point I doubt Bell could have done anything to avoid the acquisition.

EA spokesperson said, we love your money, not the games we make. EA Sports slogan, It's Not in the Game. Yes, always avoided anything EA as I personally think, they are about making money, not content.

Was a backer from the start, really enjoyed PC3 as I personally liked the FFB for my wheel set up, sad it will be no more ( we have AMS2 now though ):inlove:
It generated some great looking screenshots....errr, in between racing of course;)
I tip my hat to the Tracks Artists and vehicle Modders as these looked stunning in the right lighting and PC1, 2, 3 had a fantastic selection of Cars and Tracks.

Screenshots to brighten up this thread, some eye candy:geek:...on my journey through Project Cars....will be missed.

Maybe it wasn’t his choice to sell, seems odd to hate a business so much like ea and then do business with them.

Edit

Sorry I posted this without reading the other messages! I see it was codematers choice as they bought SMS.

I don’t get why people dislike this guy, I bet he is a right good laugh to know.

I don't think Ian is to blame here. When you look at the bigger picture, the company always had a finite lifespan due to tech debt.

Their days were numbered the moment Project CARS was conceived in 2012. A "jack of all trades racing sim" on a derivative of isiMotor is not possible the way it's envisioned. There are too many cars, tracks, rules packages, and functionalities to polish.

You can see this in every other isiMotor game - there is a reason rFactor NASCAR mods never took off, and iRacing did. GTR 2 shipped with a bug where all AI cars got damaged too frequently in endurance races upwards of 1 hour. F1 Challenge itself, a holy grail of racing sims, took a back seat to GP4.

And yet SMS marched ahead, trying to build "the ultimate racing sim for everyone that does everything", on this engine that kinda sorta does open wheel racing right sometimes but isn't as good as GP4. At some point, this tech debt was going to catch up with them. It is incredible they got four mass market racing sims out, sims that were basically rFactor for Xbox and Playstation with licensed cars and tracks, that introduced a whole bunch of new people to the hobby.

The 1-2 punch of Fast & Furious & pCars 3 screwed them financially. Selling the company gave them an influx of cash which, contrary to what you mentioned, kept people employed and at least one more project on the horizon.

So they start work on pCars 4, but it too, is on the Madness Engine. In trying to polish every last issue and add advanced graphical stuff/tech into the mix to make it relevant in 2022, plus car/track licenses, plus payroll, I presume they blew through a ton of money. And they're probably not on schedule and having to cut features because welcome to game development.

EA then goes and checks out this Automobilista 2 game, or maybe it comes across their dashboard one day. They discover it's nearly identical to what Project CARS 4 would have been, and has maybe 342 people playing it on Steam. This is not a region EA operates in. EA realizes they are blowing through millions to build a game that already exists, and is fighting for scraps in a diluted market, with more sims on the horizon. "Holy christ," someone probably thought internally.

I hope everyone lands on their feet. Some really nice people there.
