Have Your Say: Who is Your F1 Driver of the Year?

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.jpg
The 2021 Formula 1 season was a drama and action packed season; we want to hear who your Driver of the Year is.

We're just one week removed from the conclusion of the 2021 Formula 1 season. This was a season filled with moments of awe and controversy, and not one F1 fans are soon to forget. The amazing efforts of all of the drivers kept this season compelling, but certain drivers stood out as exceptional this year, and we want to hear from you who had the best season overall. Here are some ideas:

Max Verstappen / Lewis Hamilton - The obvious choices for Driver of the Year would be Verstappen and Hamilton, who battled week after week, each taking turns leading the drivers' points championship. Verstappen was the more consistent of the two and claimed his first championship, but the late season response of Hamilton was also impressive, so there's a strong case for either being Driver of the Year.

Lando Norris - Red Bull and Mercedes were close in points for most of the season. And while this rivalry was heating up, Lando Norris was quietly running in 3rd place in the drivers' standings, ahead of the highly favoured Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. The season didn't finish that way, but Norris' first half of the season was well above expectations, and some poorly timed rain was all that stood between Norris and a deserved win in Russia.

Carlos Sainz - Most of us knew that the Ferrari team of Sainz and Charles Leclerc would have a strong showing in 2021 if given a good car, but there was a sense that Leclerc could steal headlines and establish himself as the top driver between the two. Carlos Sainz impressed everyone this year, collecting four podium finishes and finishing outside of the points only twice.

So let us know in the comments below who you think was Driver of the Year in F1. And remember to keep your comments respectful; we hope to end our Formula 1 coverage for the year on a positive note.

couldn’t agree more with this…so many point to the Mercedes PU as being superior. While that is very much true, Faster PU does not equal better car, especially not in F1. Red Bull had always had the best aero efficient car for years, they just lacked the PU performance and now they have one that’s strong enough to make their car the full package. Thus, RB was the better car for most of the season until Merc turned the ICE up to 11.
I had my eye on that engine cover through winter testing.
With the narrow engine fitment, anybody who likes and understands aerodynamics could see where gains were made.
Due to the bigger 'playground' above the diffuser as a result of that much narrower engine cover, they could regain much of the downforce and with it...rear stability.
That is what made the car better this season....narrow packaging.

Red Bull's aero advantage was particularly great at the two Austrian races - especially during the race.

Finishing 20-odd & 40-odd seconds ahead says it all - that's the kind of dominance that merc enjoyed in some races in recent years.

. 29 times Hamilton went over track limits in Bahrain
. Very convenient red flag just after Hamilton crashed in Imola
. Sacrificed Bottas for 2 extra points in Monaco
. Max's tyres popped in Baku
. Crashed Max out in Silverstone
. Bottas crashed Max out in Hungary
. Max denied full points for Spa
. Max punished for being driven off track in Monza
. Tuned up monster engine for final races and suspicious as hell DRS
. Max punished for being ran wide and getting rear ended by Lewis
. Favoured by stewards after cutting the corner in Abu Dhabi

And Hamilton still lost anyway. Get over it already, jeez.
dont forget Red Bull continually claiming mercedes cheating no matter how many checkes the FIA did.

In his career how many times have the Verstappens been arrested?

Verstappen has his whole career including this year run others off the track, Red Bull admit one, he is the most dangerous driver not to lose his licence in F1 history.

Bunch of little m'itches

Dangerous driving? In a racetrack? Not on MY watch.

Hamilton: Accused of dangerous driving the 1st few years of his F1 career (by amongst them Webber & Massa)

Vettel: Accused of dangerous driving (at least by Hamilton)

Verstappen: Accused of dangerous driving (by amongst them Hamilton & Massa)

Senna: Accused of dangerous driving (at least by Prost)

Schumacher: Accused of dangerous driving (at least by Barrichello & Coulthard)

Nice list to be in xD

xD what does this have to do with anything though

During the weekend of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne...

Lewis Hamilton was arrested on Friday night as he was driving away from the circuit to his hotel. Police spotted smoke from the burning tires of his Mercedes road car, and the former World Champion is expected to be charged with improper use of a vehicle on public roads.

we all know Lewis actually would lost his 7th championship already last year without the rule change that FIA let Mercedes -the only team- to use the DAS... lol

The FIA banning an innovation within or the season after it's introduction, no way! That surely has never happened before, lol

Max is my choice. He did everything he could and more to take that title. He came into the season mentally prepared and was pretty much consistent all season long. There were some mistakes too to be fair and at the same time in many cases luck wasn't on his side until the final race.
Honorable mention - Lewis (obviously).
Lewis had an outstanding performance in last few races of the season, lost the title of no fault of his own. However, I think he came into season NOT prepared to fight for the title. Doing all the other stuff outside of F1 while Max was spending hours in simulator (and yeah, some will say simracing is just for kids but he literally performed on top (alien) level there be it endurance 24h races or 10 sprint races a day).
Next ones on my list - smooth operator Carlos and Gasly.

I was rooting for Max to take the title. We needed someone to break the "Mercedes only champs" cycle. However, after the last race it became clear that Max didn't deserve it. Not only was Lewis faster and made a 11-12 second difference, what the FIA did on the last lap is inexcusable. Max didn't deserve the title that way.
I'm now rooting for Lewis.

Max Verstappen for winning the championship, Lewis Hamilton for fighting to the end and taking it on the chin. Both put in a great season and provided the entertainment we all enjoyed. I hope we see a similar showdown next season. The closer the title fight the more fun it is to watch for all of us. Regardless of the different views in how it finished, championships being decided on the last lap of the last race doesn't get much more exciting for an F1 season. Gasly, Ocon , Norris all looked good and personally I was chuffed to see Seb pick up a few results too.
