1-3 December sees the best Gran Turismo 7 players battling out in Barcelona in the GT7 World Finals. Meanwhile, fans at home can win cars by just watching the broadcast in-game!

It is that time of year again. The Gran Turismo 7 World Finals are on the horizon and for the first time since the series’ inception, the onsite World Finals will not take place in Monaco. Instead, the players are heading to Barcelona to cap off the season which began in August.

Back in Amsterdam for the World Series Showdown, it was Porsche and Spain who came out on top. During that event, players could earn in-game prizes simply by tuning in. One of which was a free Toyota Ambulance Himedic before it became available to purchase in-game.

In the leadup to the World Finals, to entice players to watch, the same tabs have opened up on the GT7 in-game world map. Predict The Winners will allow people to make their guesses for the winners of each day’s championship.

Doing so, you can earn 1,000,000 credits for every one of the three days providing you correctly predict. Then, of course, there is another Viewers Campaign.

Watch Racing, Earn Cars

When you open up GT7, tab over to Viewers Campaign in the top right hand of the screen. There, you can find a menu with three external links to follow the World Finals broadcasts. On Friday from 7pm CET, the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup Grand Final is taking place. For watching that, players can earn a Toyota FT-1 VGT.

For Sunday’s Nations Cup Grand Final from 4pm CET, a Mazda LM55 VGT will be added to player’s collections. The cars will arrive in the garage and be accessible via the Gifts tab on 11 December, and all streams can be viewed in-game any time prior to that date. It does not have to be seen live for these prizes to be redeemed.

Saturday’s Manufacturers Cup Grand Final – which begins at 7pm CET – is the most interesting, though. Typically during the World Finals over the past few years, there has always been a new Vision Gran Turismo car revealed. The Ferrari VGT was unveiled during the World Finals last year, and was the prize for participating in Viewer’s Campaign.

Therefore, it is safe to assume that the as of yet unidentified prize for tuning in to the Manufacturers Cup stream will be a new VGT car! All players need to do is open the streams in-game, they do not even need to pay full attention to it. As long as the stream has been played, all of these cars will be given to players for free.

More World Finals Events

As we mentioned with Predict The Winners, players can earn up to 3,000,000 credits. For the best chances of getting them correct, wait until the grid is set for the Grand Final as entries close at the start of the race.

Keep in mind that for the Manufacturers and Nations Cup events, the results from the Showdown do factor in to the final standings. For the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup, it is a complete standalone event.

Plus, to keep the players entertained in-game, a new set of limited time races have opened up.

Players can take part in two races. The first mirrors the Manufacturers Cup final in Gr.3 cars on the Nürburgring 24h circuit. The other doing the same for the Nations Cup, with the bespoke Red Bull X2019 Competition at Spa-Francorchamps.

All of this can be seen on Gran Turismo 7 right now. The GTWS World Finals will take place 1-3 December.

Gran Turismo has been consistently one of the more successful sim racing e-sports ventures, even if they probably would've liked better numbers still. Initiatives like offering these in game rewards for predicting the winner, or even just for clicking on the stream, help drum up interest because you only need a small percentage of your playerbase to think "might as well watch the race then". And then many of the world series drivers are also AI opponents in GT7's world circuit events, so when these players do watch the race they go "oh, I know that guy!" and get invested in watching them go all out.

Could other sim racing live events learn from and adapt this model? If so, what would be an in-game bonus that makes sense, given that most sims don't have the GT style game economy?

Spot on, my friend. I love racing esports but even I realise the fact that most people would not engage with it unless there was an element pertaining to upcoming in-game content. The article I linked at the beginning was one I did on how organisers can work with game devs to show off content coming to the game at a later date in order to generate hype.

I firmly believe that Polyphony have hit the nail on the head when it comes to encouraging people to tune in to their events. The others could all learn something from it.
