Rennsport Closed Beta Update 1.8.0 Out Now, Keys Landing

Rennsport Closed Beta Update 1.8.0 Out Now, Keys Landing.jpg
Further closed beta keys for embryonic simulator Rennsport are said to be on the way to recipients today, meanwhile a new platform update adds fresh features.

After a period of relative silence, nascent sim racing platform Rennsport has started its 2024 roadmap with a new update.

Released today, 27th March 2024, it adds new features and content ahead of what could be more significant changes later in the year.

New Car, Track and Game Mode

The Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb and the electric Porsche Mission R are now in the closed beta.

Both were previewed, in a playable state, at Rennsport’s first summit event way back in 2022, so it is perhaps surprising that (from the outside looking in) it has taken this long before their appearance.

The Mission R is seen in titles such as iRacing and Forza Motorsport and sends 1,088 PS to the road via all-wheel drive.

Fitting with the hillclimb theme, the ability to compete in time trial events, with ghosts and online leaderboards, has been added – although it is not restricted to the British venue.

Day/Night Cycles

While rain, or dynamic weather, remains an omission, being able to race in the dark is now possible – albeit only at one venue for now, Spa-Francorchamps.

Cloud formations are said to move across the sky, seemingly affecting shadows on the track. Night races at Spa will be the first test sessions for the new feature.

Key Drops

For those still on the Rennsport Closed Beta key request list, this week may be your lucky week, as a new batch is set to be released.

Rennsport claims that it will launch 2,500 keys every Thursday onwards, starting from 4th April 2024.

Just like it was for existing users, this is redeemed via the Epic Games Store.

The Year Ahead

The ability to lock the horizon is now also possible and the full changelog is below.

When the Competition Company announced its 2024 roadmap last week, it broke the year down into four quarters. Today’s ‘Time Trial’ update marks the beginning of this programme, with Q1 complete for now.

The next major update is set for some time within Q2 and will see GT4 cars and McLaren for the first time amongst other features, with the updates across the year said to be building up to ‘endurance racing’.

In theory, it’s not too unreasonable to expect pitstops, tyre wear, multiple compounds, changeable weather conditions and fuel management within a longer race – let’s see.

The new additions are listed below, plus the full changelog is published soon.

Have you received a key this week? Or are you still waiting? Let us know in the comments or on X, @OverTake_GG.

  • In online races, if a car crashes at very high speeds into a wall, it can cause a mini-freeze for all connected clients
  • Reversing with the Porsche Mission R will recharge the battery
  • Getting a black flag in Time Trial will soft lock the player. You have to leave the Time Trial and go back to the Main Menu
  • Updating your profile name will not update your name in any Time Trial leaderboards unless a faster time is set with the new name
  • EV has wrong TC sound, fix in future patch

Tried the update yesterday and sadly I had to bind my buttons again. I had to calibrate and assign and wheelbase again and feels way worse than in previous versions. Uninstalled it and will wait(maybe) for a public version

With a dedicated team, Rennsport may ultimately blossom. I hope, in the meantime, that they will add or improve VR, support for all force feedback wheels including my Accuforce Pro V2, and support for several motion platforms. The use of VR, Motion and FFB, if done right, are often transformative and incredibly immersive. And, as others have stated, it doesn't matter how Rennsport compares to RF2, AMS2, ACC, etc., UNTIL the public release. So, let's be gracious enough to give them time to make it right (or at least close to right) BEFORE public release. Criticizing the state of the game in a closed beta and arguing it should be released sooner rather than later are exactly the wrong way to support the growth of our hobby.

Ohh new update of UE and sharpening?
Maybe that will cure the blurry, washed out shimmery graphics - I'm gonna give it an install and see!

Started game set all graphics settings to max using DX12 and remapped my controls.

Jumped in the car. Upshift doesn't work. Re-map upshift. Jumped in the car. Upshift worked. Downshift didn't. Remapped downshift. Drove car.

Washed out blurry graphics, added some sharpening which just made it look ... weird.
FWIW: 49" 1440p, can run pretty much everything maxed out on my machine.

Uninstalled.

It's a least a good year away from being usable IMO.

Dont understand, capped the FPS turned frame generation on, was expecting to see less stress ... no , got more :/ also... some cars clutch is weird as hell.... cant even properly make them run... and i do not understand how with a new version of the UE it looks way worst then ACC in pretty much every department ...

Whatever, I get 160 fps almost everywhere in WRC on ultra (4080, 13600k, Samsung G9), which I find good enough. Rennsport has many problems, but graphics isn't really one of it in comparison, even I only get 85 fps on epic. LMU looks and runs better, but it's released already, even if it's just in Early Access.

The worst issue in Rennsport is IMO: there are no tyre sounds in this game while braking or during corners indicating grip levels. Absolute non existent with a FFB as 'informative' as iRacing, so the only feedback are the visuals while iRacing 'talks' at least with it's tyre-sounds. The Porsche GT3 sound is improved, but the AMG sounds horrible and not even like a car. I've also tried the Mission R, which was the only one I could feel a bit from it's FFB, but the missing tyre sounds are even more obvious without engine sounds. I also miss any form of shift feedback and feels more like pure audio changes without any engine brake or changes in torque depending on the revs. Throttle and brake doesn't give me any form of challenge and feels like it's just about steering and keeping lines while the pedals can be used like on/off-switches. Even in practice mode it resets the tyres every lap like in a hotlap mode, so no idea how they might change or how to deactivate this.

Its a stutter feast WRC, very very bad implementation of UE yet again, depresses me to fire the game and hit a wall and have a stutter, even with the shaders pre compiled... thats a poor example where EGO was much better looking ...

I was really hyped for this title but the Esports direction ,lack of VR...(Don't underestimate the Power of VR) and general lack of updates/content killed the hype for me.

Then,
iracing rain update, AMS2 updates, 397 gave birth to Le Mans...
Now we got options.

Was hoping this will be the iracing killer....
I think exactly the same.
However, with more than 30 years of experience in software development, I told my son, when he showed me the first Rennsport announcement, that they will never go live. This will become a neverending story, unfortunately. I was hoping they would have proved me wrong.
@Rennsport: I still count on you!

This may be a bit unfair comment but don't get mad now, thanks. I'm just reminding you what this is about...

This released version is a closed BETA only available to a selected and limited user base.

You should inform Rennsport team all bugs and issues you find during BETA testing. It won't help if you only tell to us and crying, thought. You promised to join BETA testing so please do what you promised. Or just cry if you feel like it, I know that it's hard to please a large number of sim racers, because they do not accept nothing but the best quality for free or almost for free.

Software testing process

Alpha testing
Alpha testing is performed by the company's internal development or quality assurance team. Its main purpose is to find software bugs. In alpha testing, the operation of the software is examined in real operating conditions by imitating the operation of end users.

Beta testing
Beta testing is pre-release testing. The main purpose of beta testing is to ensure the software's compatibility with various software and hardware configurations. In addition, users receive feedback on the usability and functionality of the software. During beta testing, end users detect and report bugs they find. All testing activities are performed outside the organization that developed the software.

There are two types of beta testing:

An open beta version available to a large number of users
A closed beta version that is only available to a selected and limited user base

Gamma testing
Gamma testing is the final step in the software pre-release testing process. Its purpose is to ensure that the product is ready to be released to the market, and that all the requirements specified for it are fulfilled. Gamma testing focuses on the security and functionality of the software, but does not include any internal quality assurance functions of the organization. During gamma testing, no changes are made to the software unless the detected bug is a high priority and/or severity bug. Feedback received from gamma testing will be taken into account in future software version updates. However, due to the limited development cycle, gamma testing is usually skipped.

Ps. I have the Rennsport 1.8.0 Beta key, game not yet installed. I dot not care visual elements that much, but driving experience and how does driving feels is the most important thing. I do not expect much about this game, we already have Assetto Corsa and that's almost everything we need, though.

The thing is, isn't this product in beta phase since ages and didn't they use the beta product allready to host high profile ESL events? If you present your product like that and aim for the highest level you will have to cope with the feedback. And don't get me wrong, I hope that they can make this a great title because I generaly think that competition on the sim racing market will be good for all of us in the long run. But with this title I have no idea what it is supposed to be, let it be in terms of features, content or the general goal of the title. Modding has been one of the key notes by them but I haven't seen anything communicated by them on how they implement all of this. A friend of mine has a beta key and never used it so he offered me the key. Yet I feel zero need to even give the title a go wich is kind of a bad sign. New sim racing titles should peak our interest and not make us question what we are supposed to do with the title. And the whole development and communication about the title has been a key issue in that regard.

this engine isn't good for racing games, some of the issues that ACC has are also present here but other things are even worse so long road ahead to make it work and feel good

EA WRC proves to me, that UE5 isn't a problem.
You realize that these 2 games use a different engine or you just pretend not knowing this to try to make a point?

Both Rennsport and EA WRC are using Unreal Engine 5 and it's really easy to Google. I don't have any performance issues with both games, so better blame your system if your experience differ.

EA WRC uses UE4. Why are you assuming I have performance issues with these games? I've even never played EA WRC. Haven't tried Rennsport for some months but it was badly performing for what was on screen. By the way, if many are reporting performance issues, you should understand that it is a real issue, even if you don't experience it yourself (or pretend not to, as your "easy to google" remark shows you even didn't do it yourself and try to misinformed).

For me it seems that many people have problems reducing the graphics settings to match their systems. I also had some framerate problems in EA WRC with their first release and just lowered the overall settings to 'high' to solve them. Nowadays every stage I've tried give me solid 140 fps or mostly more on ultra. And it's really not that important what UE version a game is running, but how it's done. ACC is certainly not a great example for what's possible with that engine and I guess they were starting on the wrong foot with it. Raceroom KW failed completely with their SimBin UK attempt and Rennsport is still closed beta. You can't expect performance optimisations at this point of the development. LMU for example runs better while looking prettier, but the gap is bigger with physics and sounds.

And it's really not that important what UE version a game is running, but how it's done.
It is important, UE5 has many features, bringing visual improvements and optimization, which aren't available in UE4, features which Rennsport haven't been using (it was obvious when it came out that no developper had enough experience with UE5), maybe it uses them now but I have high doubts.

And yes, it absolutzly depends on the way it is done, EA WRC main issue is the shader compilation running during the game (that's why players generally have a better experience now, the operation needs to be run only one time, during the first time you race on a specific stage), and Rennsport is made as an UE4 game in UE5, I assume to have room to improve the graphics later (I am not competent to state it was a good idea).

To be honest, optimization in simracing has always been an issue and rarely a priority. And worse, for a few years it hasn't been a priority in gaming in general. When a developper is willing to give us a smooth optimized experience, whatever the engine is, it is possible. There are a few examples, whatever the genre, generally from small developpers.

I'm not sure what the complaints are about graphically, im set to dx12/epic over all settings and TSR as AA and having no issues. Im on a medium spec pc (9900/3080ti/64gb) and it runs just fine, the ffb is fine and better than some paid games i have, i can feel slips and catch them, but, im not an online player and without AI this is still just a hotlapper for me, but a pretty good lapper all things considered.

I hope they add triple screen or at least TrackIr soon, playing at a bad FOV to be able to see more of the car is a bit painfull..
