Automobilista 2's Convenient Online Feature You May Not Know Yet

A large selection of content is usually good for sim racers, although this tends to be achieved via the DLC route. This can make joining lobbies online difficult for those that do not own all the content a sim has to offer – this is not necessarily the case in Automobilista 2, however: Reiza Studios' title has a neat feature that many sim racers may not know about.

Most who have organized an event or a league in AMS2 likely have come across the question of whether or not DLC is necessary to participate. The good news: You do not need every piece of content to be safe – should you not own a track, you can still join a session and race at the circuit as long as the server host does own it.

This basically allows all AMS2 players access to every track if they are racing online, making it possible to participate in leagues and championships for which they do not own every single circuit on the calendar. They will have to rely on someone else to host these tracks to practice for the event, however, as they cannot be accessed in single-player modes.

Cars Work Differently

Cars, however, are exempt from this feature. Luckily, this means that only a few vehicle classes are not accessible to anyone, as they are comprised of DLC-only content: Fans of DPI, GTE and CART/IndyCar racing need to invest into the first two Racin' USA Packs – which also come with three tracks each - to be able to drive these vehicles, and the same is true for the Supercars Pack Pt1.

A practical example: You want to join a race at Hockenheim 2001 in the Formula V10 Gen 2 cars, which emulate the 2000/2001 season (as you can find out in our AMS2 F1 Season Guide), but have not bought any of the circuit DLCs. You can then still join the session and take part as someone else is hosting the event.

Want to race a 2001 Jaguar at Hockenheim online but do not own the circuit? No problem!

On the other hand, if you want to take part in a F-USA Gen 2 race with CART cars of 1998 at Montreal, you would have to buy the Racin' USA Pt2 Pack. In this case, even though you own the track as it is stock content in AMS2, you need to own the cars as there is no stock content in the F-USA Gen 2 class.

Montreal is stock content, the F-USA Gen 2 cars are not - so this combo is out of the question if you only own the base game.

If you are on the fence about which DLC to buy, you should consider the car-based packs first as a result. This way, you will be able to participate in any online event you can find (save for the password-protected ones, of course. As a nice benefit, many of them come with some circuits included, so you can enjoy them in single-player modes as well.

Thank you for keeping us informed about this great feature of this superb car simulation, which has been criticized by many people either because they are in love with their favorite sims or because they read and repeat... let's stay polite, somewhat following the rumors on the Net

Great feature. But MP is hardly unusable so who cares.
I play in online lobbies almost daily in AMS2 and it works amazing but yes there are some bugs. But not as bad as rfactor 2, I really like rf2 too but I'm never able to join a public lobby since it wants to have content that I don't have, or its only a practice session of 2 hours and it had only 3 drivers or there is simply nobody online. But with AMS2 I always manage to find a fun race online. Yes of course it's not iracing in terms of stability but it's not as bad as you described.

ams 2 online is only good for the most casual of players and lobby's.

it's completely broken and unusable for any sort of organised leagues etc, that's why the game is dead
Considering the RD Racing Club events and two F1 leagues with full race distances we have hosted in our podcast community went really well, I am not sure what sort of difficulties you may have encountered that made it unusable.

I have tried RF2 online lately. But I thought they addressed not having to buy content to race online. Like buy one car and you can race against others. I do like AMS2 easy way to race online with a friend.

I still have mixed feelings about AMS2 but it has grown on me. It has become my go to simulator to introduce people to sims with. The selection of tracks they have is unique, and there are several really simple tracks that are easy for first timers to learn. For that matter there is a good selection of easy to drive vehicles as well.

Regardless of how you feel about the similator. This practice with dlc and multiplayer should be encouraged. Good on Reiza for doing so.

Yeah it's everyone's fault but AMS2 and Reiza.

If people were always "in love with their favorite sims" then how did the other sims get so popular? Why aren't GTR2, Nascar2003 and original Rfactor still dominating? You're just spouting absolutely baseless opinions that amount to nonsense. People have been badmouthing and trashing Codemaster games for YEARS yet F1 2022 had a peak of over 7,000 today. Heck, F1 2021 nearly doubled AMS2 players today.

Reiza themselves fully admitted that it shouldn't have taken them this long to still be uncovering major physics flaws, yet from day 1 the AMS2 fanbase attacked anyone that said negative things. Go back to that Youtube guy, Jimmy and watch the video. Even back then his comment was something like "You can fix understeer by simply turning the wheel more", and (shock) Renato himself just confirmed it was in fact an issue, but only said that once they thought they actually had a fix for it.

In regard to multiplayer, yes it is possible to have decent races but to not see that some really bad contact happens where 2 people's replays show different stories, and the inability to make any adjustments as an admin when things go sour make it currently the WORST multiplayer experience out there is just denial.

The game is so much better now than it was at release, but over 3 years have gone by. Reiza haven't done themselves favors by calling at least 2 of the updates "game changers" when the handling was still wonky. This next update is going to help handling a lot and slowly I think the game will gain in fanbase. A few MP improvements need to happen as well though in my opinion.

Much as I recognize Jimmy Broadbent is a YouTuber who (literally) lives off clicks... he's been around sim racing a long time, driven a lot of time on sims in diverse cars, has a track record of frankness, and as of the last couple years also has significant real world racing experience under his belt. Not surprising to me he'd be discerning enough to quickly pick up on this kind of issue and speak his mind, even just when quickly jumping into AMS2 to see how it feels on the latest update (as he did in those videos where he was flamed by ardent AMS2 fans and even, privately, someone at Reiza).

Hmm, I'd better tell all those online leagues I am in on Discord about this, they will be really annoyed as they have been using it every week. Thanks for the heads up though, its great to read an informed opinion that isn't just parroting people's favourite YouTuber who is in the back pocket of one of the big sims.

Only participated online AMS2 events for a single week, down with illness, more than a year ago. What I read from the bragging here, I feel extremely lucky.
That week was by far my best online experience for my entire online appearance during +20 years including F1C, GTR2, rF1, SimRaceWay, iRacing, WTCC, Race07, rF2, AC and ACC.
Consisted of a group of 7-10 both very skilled and very hospital simmers, forgiving to me, and though my ilness I catched up within a couple of races, in a loop of maybe 6 events with short qual + sprint races.

And between races with cozy and supporting chats, and mature discussions of race incidents and suggestions for furure similar situations. All in an extremely pleasant and downright inspiring atmosphere.

Not exactly the experience of what SRW online lobbies ended up with (a mess), but quite the opposite. This was how every online experience shpuld be.

Off topic:
Has AMS2 introduced offline flaws in relation to championships?
Yesterday night I created a full F1 '88 forced pitstop sprint series (filling in with alternative venues in the calendar where AMS2 have holes) with scripted weather, trying to get as close to historic conditions as possible, moreover using the F1 1988 skin pack.
But during first race at Jacarepaguá, mid race, just before my planned pitstop, game crashes and my AMD Adrenaline software reset all my special settings.

Reinstalled AMD driver, 4K flatscreen stress tests in AC with Pure in all gfx demanding conditions max grid at Targa Florio, and them in highest settings in VR, all flawless after even tuning my Adrenaline settings to max effort, besides GPU+VRAM OC and everything. And then tried im some tricky demanding mods in rF2 as well. Still no issues.

Then switched down to conservative Adrenaline settings, flat screen res as low as 1080p, AMS2 low graphics settings. Same crash happened.
Seems I can only reproduce crash in championship mode. Just did a 2,4 hour full grid AMS2 modern day 24h Nordschleife changing weather in VR with no crashes.
