A two week break separates the Qatar Grand Prix and Formula One's second American GP, this time at COTA. Here is all you need to look out for this weekend.

Two weeks ago, Formula One was preparing for an all-out assault in the desert of Qatar. However, heat, track conditions and tyre wear lead to a rather interesting Grand Prix that has become somewhat controversial.

But it is good news for those complaining about track limits because this weekend, the paddock ventures to a circuit where track limits have never been an issue. Oh wait, we mean the opposite. COTA - or Circuit Of The Americas - hosts Round 19 of this record calendar.

The Grand Prix taking place at COTA is always a fun race. As a result, there is plenty to discuss going into the event. Here are the main talking points for the weekend.

All About The Show

One of the main aspects of Formula One's annual visit to COTA is the atmosphere. Whilst it once suffered from low attendance, the sport's rise in North America has certainly attracted the crowds. Furthermore, thanks to its proximity to Austin, the party city, social media managers up and down the grid enjoy the content on offer.

In fact, drivers often take on the roles of entertainers with various media duties and appearances. Certainly in the run up to the event, Instagram and Twitter are sure to be ablaze.

However, the most exciting part for race fans is the fact that COTA always manages to deliver exciting racing. Thanks to its layout, the Circuit of the Americas naturally encourages close running and overtakes.

In fact, the circuit combines an excellent high-speed first sector with slower sections that allows multi-corner battles. These sections are divided by a pair of long straights and heavy braking zones that allow deep dives. With twice the racing action on show this weekend thanks to the Sprint format, we are sure to experience a lot of excitement.

Ricciardo Returns

One would certainly be excused for forgetting that the Honey Badger is back in Formula One. Daniel Ricciardo returned to the sport after replacing Nyck De Vries at Alpha Tauri earlier this season. However, in just his third weekend, he suffered a broken hand after a crash at Zandvoort.

Since then, the Australian has once again been away from the track, with a very competent Liam Lawson filling his shoes.

This weekend however, Ricciardo makes his return to the sport at a circuit he often claims to be one of his favorites. No doubt thanks to the aforementioned show atmosphere that matches his personality, the Aussie revels in the ambiance. Whether or not Daniel once again makes a show of his appearance this weekend is as yet unknown. One can imagine that a sedate return to the circuit would be beneficial for a driver that is clearly lacking seat time.

How To Watch The United States Grand Prix

As aforementioned, the 2023 COTA Grand Prix is once again a Sprint event. That means that for the first time in the format's existence, F1 will get two Sprint weekends in a row. However, it does mean that competitive running will get going as early as Friday, so keeping on top of session times is crucial. Here are all the sessions you must look out for over the next few days.

Great race and nice to see Red Bull under a little pressure... though I feel it's more about the RB 19 not needing upgrades, Red Bull have probably been spending their time on the 24 (RB20) car.
That doesn't bode well for the opposition for next year as they're still bringing upgrades to secure 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

I'd really have liked to see Lando take his first win, but McLaren still have a bit of work to do.

Now we know why Lewis was so fast . Cheaters
Sad!
Well both cheaters were DQ'd. Don't just hightlight Hamilton as being such. I don't want to believe an upstanding person as yourself would not harbor prejudice.

Well, that's a good haul for Checo and none for his lordship!
As for cheating... I don't think it was the teams intention as such, more that the cars were being driven on bits of the track that wears the plank, because George and Carlos were OK, again it's one of those "lessons to be learned" times.
Either way it didn't detract from a great race and an even greater use of the 'bleep' machine.

Edit: "Toto Wolff accepts it was a set-up issue"

ahhhh it's not the team that mainly shouts nonsense and accuses RB of cheating? So thats why

Yes, a setup mistakes for Mercedes and Ferrari. But some people are just too eager to seize any opportunity to spew their venom at Hamilton.
yes, how could that happen? the fact that people don't like him? has to do with his own statements to other drivers. and he does it every time.
Let's see what Lewis said before the F1 weekend started

Hamilton before the weekend "the FIA has to stop RB/Max's dominance. After the race FIA disqualify Hamilton. That's quite funny!

It's actually a good thing for him he didn't win the race otherwise it would have been even more of a thing

Mercedes didn't cheat. Hamilton is unlikeable. Those two arguments can co-exist without contradiction.

Mercedes and Ferrari took a risk and didn't work. RBR ran with a higher than normal ride height. There are no cheats on this, but also add to the mix Max's brake problems, and surely the gap between teams is not as little as what it seemed yesterday during the GP.

Max with brake problems others cheating, Max stil is winning with two fingers in the nose :)

I'd be careful with the word "cheating" if I was a Red Bull fan. Remember last season?

Leclerc and Hamilton DQs were obviously the results of a setup error.

Still waiting for how a new Merc engine took a car that was approximately equal to the Red Bull Honda but suddenly was leaps and bound faster AND those leaps and bounds lasted 4 complete races.

Ohh a setup error.. yes I would say that too. the mechanic must have had too much to drink the night before? ;)

They benefited from it and that is cheating no matter how nicely you put it :roflmao:

Because it happened at the same time that Mercedes did a complete setup overhaul on the car, and that achieved both extracting more performance from the car and push the center of pressure rearwards, which is what Hamilton wanted.

It was an engineers's decision, not a mechanics's execution. And that is a totally valid mistake, which has happened before at this series and many others (happened at IMSA's 6 Hours of Watkins Glen this year). And what benefit did they get if they got no points from Hamilton's car at the very venue they tried?

There is no cheating on this, no matter how much do you insist on it.

I would suspect overly aggressive driving over curbing to also be a cause as neither teammate suffered similar penalties. Hamilton, by his own admission via the in-car radio, knew he had to drive very hard to try and catch Lando & Max.
Curiously though, most of the mainstream media that reported on this singled out Hamilton with very few even mentioning Ferrari and/or LeClerc.

Yes. Probably because Lewis was given a decent strategy (besides that bit when they tried in vain to stretch a stint when tyres were already dropping fast) and so he was on the attack the whole time and under the spotlight, while Leclerc was put on an awful strategy and he couldn't actively push the whole distance, which makes his DSQ actually more puzzling.

Yeah, if it sells papers make a big thing of it, Leclerc isn't really at the top of the game, so... Max and Lewis can have bad things said about them, and Lando can have good things said about him... the rest don't really sell to the great 'Red top' unwashed

The F1 site specifically says that one car being examined doesn’t mean that the other will be due to time and resource constraints. Seems like Russell’s car wasn’t examined and neither was that of Sainz. Both very well could have had the same issue and we will never know.

As far as someone implying Hamilton intentionally asked for a cheating setup: it’s his job as a driver to say what makes the car feel better on the track. It is most definitely not his job to know when the car is too low to stop the skid block from taking too much wear. I know the Hamilton haters will latch onto anything, but c’mon now….
