The summer break is over: After three weekends without a race, Formula One fans look forward to the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort - home turf for reigning World Champion Max Verstappen. Can the 25-year-old equal Sebastian Vettel's 2013 record for most race wins in a row?

After heading into the summer break with a a sprint and feature race win in Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix, Verstappen is aiming for his ninth win in succession in front of his home crowd. Historically, the odds are in favor of the championship leader: Since Zandvoort has returned to the F1 calendar in 2021, Red Bull's lead driver has won both races.

Excitement for the race was not universal ahead of the weekend, however: Already a week before Sunday's race, protestors of the "Just Stop Oil" movement threatened to derail the event. Adding to this were taxi drivers in the region, who were initially not allowed to enter the area while drivers from outside Zandvoort had received special permits to service the Grand Prix weekend. An agreement was reached in time for the weekend.

Haas Duo Continues in 2024

Just a day before the on-track action kicked off in the dunes of Zandvoort, Haas announced its driver lineup for the 2024 season: Both Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg will be back behind the wheel for the American privateer squad. The two veterans should provide some much-needed stability for Haas, which is battling to stay out of the bottom three positions in the Constructor's Championship. The team is currently tied for seventh with Williams at 11 points.

Further up the pecking order, Aston Martin might have to look for a replacement for Lance Stroll for 2024. Just ahead of the Dutch GP weekend, rumors had emerged that the Canadian is looking to leave the team to pursue a tennis career instead - if true, the seat next to 2005 and 2006 World Champion Fernando Alonso would be vacant for the upcoming season. That was not the only bit of news on Stroll, however: The 24-year-old missed out Thursday's media day at Zandvoort due to an illness."

Rotten Luck for Danny Ric

Once the cars hit the tarmac, Stroll was back in the cockpit, though. Howeverm with two practice sessions for the event being held on Friday, Daniel Ricciardo's weekend was over before it really got started: After finishing the first practice session in 12th, the popular Alpha Tauri driver ended up in the wall at Hugenholtzbocht - the Australian had tried to avoid the stricken car of his compatriot Oscar Piastri in a split-second decision, leaving him no time to take his hands off the steering wheel before hitting the barrier.

The red flag came out, and it soon emerged that Danny Ric had fractured his left wrist. As a result, Super Formula driver Liam Lawson is making his F1 debut in the Netherlands to race for Alpha Tauri alongside Yuki Tsunoda. The New Zealander has been Red Bull Racing's reserve driver since 2022 and appeared in an Alpha Tauri in Free Practice at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Dutch Grand Prix Weather

It looks like the Kiwi is in for a debut in tricky conditions: While the first practice sessions were dry, rain and thunderstorms descended upon the Zandvoort area on Saturday, and the forecast does not look friendlier for Sunday's race. The probability for rain is slightly above 75% for the event's scheduled start time.

A wet race would be a first for Fomula One since returning to Zandvoort: While the 2021 event saw sunny skies, the 2022 race was held with just partial cloud cover. The circuit is certainly among the trickier layouts on the calendar in the dry already, but rain could make things much tougher for the 20 drivers on the grid.

The 2023 Dutch Grand Prix Schedule

As boring as ever, just modern formula one. Of course, as always, the legendary Max is right at the front, no matter what happens, even the weather gods can't stop him, Perez was, as always, mercilessly bad. Alonso drove to the front, congratulations, that's where he belongs too and it's a shame about the Williams and the McLaren, they deserved more, unfortunately Russel was a big disappointment.
Apparently only the start and the last part of each race is exciting, because of an accident or because of the weather, sad.

otherwise the track just sucks for racing
Another classic track butchered by urban development but this time kept in use, though it's only a shadow of its previous self.

There is so little F1 coverage in the US now that I only recognize four or five names on the roster, so am rather ambivalent about who wins. Somewhat the same with Indycar, where it is "anybody but Penske"; in F1 it is "anybody but Red Bull".

"...currently tied for seventh with Williams"

Lol, how the mighty have fallen. Remember when Williams was unbeatable?

Then Bennetton was unbeatable; then Ferrari, then Mercedes...
These days it is rare in any series to have a season with several equal teams at the front; now it is one dominant team, a handful running for second place, and everyone else.

Spare a thought on this: when the rain came late on the race and all but Max and Fernando (fastest driver on track until that point) pitted, they drove on the rain one lap under rain on slicks. On that sole lap, Verstappen gapped Alonso by 4 (four) seconds.

If that's not sheer brilliance, nothing else is.

Isn’t he not leaving the F1 scenery?
I don't know, it's rumored that Laurence asked his kids what they wanted for their birthday presents, Chloe said she wanted a pony... so that was easy, Lance on the other hand wanted a Green Cowboy outfit.

Despite the usual dude winning, it was an awesome race, really happy for fernando and sorry for mclaren, they deserved much more.. ferrari being ferrari lol

What?i'm not sure if you are joking or what, the race was awesome and unpredictable due to the rain and incredible. And the entire race was, not only the start or the last part.

Exactly, with 2 drivers the caliber of Checo (Max fastest teammate till now), RB would not be that successful, and blame it on the car. In every condition Max was on the edge.
Give him one lap and he delivers instantly.
Half of the race the conditions were slippery and DRS could not be used, so the RB strong points were not there, all comes down on setup, strategy and craftmanship.
2 seconds per lap faster than Perez, both with same intermediate's in the wet going dry slowly.
For such a shitty overtaking circuit it was a great race.

Didn't sit through it, not much to see.
Good result for FA though.
Actually, just watched highlights after switching race off and some of it wasn't bad.
Should've restarted on the grid at the end though, that would've been a lot better

I think I know what's exciting and what's not, I've been watching almost every F1 race since 1990 and as well as Max is doing, or how exciting he wins, there's nothing against him, not in 2023, not with rain, or snow or ice.

Max would have won easily in the dry by 30 seconds over the 2nd so the rain and just the rain added some excitement. With the rain it was just a little tighter than usual.

I want to experience an exciting race, ok there were definitely a few places, but in the end it didn't matter.

It's kind of sad that a race can only get more exciting when it rains because otherwise no one else will defeat Max...

I think it was a boring race with the same winner, but the rain introduced some tension, as soon as the rain was gone, it was the same as always.

And it's lights out, away we go ...... Max Verstappen wins the .... insert Track name here ....Grand Prix

Everyone will say something different and who am I, as if I could judge that, but for me personally it was very, very boring, GP whether it rained or not.

How can you watch F1 since 1990 and still not understand how it works?

This year Verstappen could start last and win every race, that's true. But that race was awesome from start to finish.

Well done Liam, beat your team mate in toughest conditions.

Last year a rookie managed to impress and beat his teammate as a stand-in, this year he got a drive at Alpha Tauri. Maybe that's on the cards for Liam too! xD

I also watched and found myself edging toward the front of my seat with the weather mixing things up.
Congrats all the guys for staying out of trouble and Max... solid win in front of an Expectant crowd.

However for your need for exciting racing perhaps you should watch some of the weekend's Silverstone Historic Festival the livestream, that was fantastic and much of the racing was close, exciting, and some incident filled, as would be expected with 40, 50 and 60 car grids.
