2021 Formula One Dutch Grand Prix

2021 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix RaceReporter.jpg
Formula One is back on track for the second week in a row, this time taking on the Zandvoort circuit for the first time since 1985.

It’s been 36 years since Formula 1 cars raced at Zandvoort. The last time a field of F1 cars raced here for the Dutch Grand Prix, names like Prost, Senna and Mansell took part, and Martin Brundle was in a race car rather than a broadcast booth.

F1 is back to the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, hoping to put forth an exciting race after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix. The race at Spa Francorchamps was effectively cancelled due to heavy rain, though the decision was made to run the minimum number of laps required behind a safety car to have the Belgian event classified as a race.

The Zandvoort circuit was updated in 2019 to accommodate F1’s return in 2020. The 2020 race was cancelled, but this year the updated circuit includes the dramatic banking of the Arie Luyendijk corner. The corner was understood to be sufficiently banked to allow DRS, though the decision has since been made to not allow DRS through this corner.

Max Verstappen took pole and the win at Spa Francorchamps, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton claiming the other two podium spots. The controversial points awarded for the Belgian Grand Prix narrowed the drivers' championship to just three points.

A win at his home race would put Verstappen back in the lead of the drivers' standings, and Dutch fans will be out in huge numbers to cheer on that result. His teammate Sergio Perez will be looking to return to form after an accident at Spa happened before he could even get to his grid spot left him out of the points. Thankfully Valtteri Bottas also finished outside of the points at Spa, so the constructors’ championship is still a tight battle with Mercedes holding a seven point lead.

The layout of the Zandvoort circuit likely won’t allow for much overtaking, and the weather is predicted to be mainly sunny for the weekend, so the pole sitter will be a heavy favourite to maintain his lead until the end of the race.

Ironically I think a rain shower is our only hope for a decent GP. This feels very Valencia to me. A track hastily added to the calendar to take advantage of a new market, rather than a carefully considered plan to deliver fantastic racing and entertainment for the wider sport.

I could be wrong, the race is not done yet.

... ****, we're a monarchy, the circuit is owned by a prince, Royal Dutch Shell and the NAM exists so we're literally a state funded entirely by fossil fuels, and there's sand everywhere. Basically no difference between us and Saudi-Arabia.
You mean the Netherlands has political prisoners, kills journalists in its embassies, treats women as second class persons and has the death penalty? :O_o:

Good comments from Botass about the track, but will be interesting to see if anyone can overtake on this track.
Could be a monaco #2.

Hopefully tyre wear, the fans, strategy and mistakes make this interesting. Hard to see any significant overtakes happening. Ferrari are looking good.

Practice and qualifying requires a strong stomach with these power units and the cars creeping along. I hope the something is done soon before there is a serious accident.

In typical dutch fashion, a sports event is turned into a festival! Now let's hope the racing itself provides the promised spectacle. Maybe not a lot of straight-on overtaking but for sure a test of focus for all the drivers, being such a compact track with almost no rest for the head and shoulders. A true rollercoaster. One mistake here can cost positions the least.

Also these are Dutch GP fans. Welcome to Zandvoort

Edit: Missed it yesterday. It seems Max passed Lance Stroll under red flag. That could be a grid penalty for him?

Kimi's first and last Zandvoort

Kimi and his passed away father...do you see here what Kimi will look like in the summer of 2022? I mean that round belly :)

That's it.
No Kimi on Zandvoort. He seems to have covid.

As a dutch f1 fan from 1994 untill now.

Its 50/50 love it because the netherlands got a gp

But on the other hand, this track even with the modifications is not a nowdays f1 track.

Drivers are running in the middle of the road when they want somebody to pass (like in a hot lap - outlap situation) not much space to hide or let somebody pass with these big f1 cars

Dont get me wrong here.
A full speed lap in a f1 car is much fun maybe even more then spa in the dry but lapped traffic in the race will be a big factor

And in qualification slower traffic will probably slow the faster cars down a bit by not giving them the optimum corner entry or exit.

So it could be a suprise who gets pole

Jeah, bad news, I thougth that they are all fully vaccinated but still corona positive??? Kimi took the first vaccine before the season starts...weird...maybe he lost his motivation too early?
When Kimi heared he had Covid, he probably said.. ok.
Turned around, went to his hotel room and ordered a bottle of Wodka.
To start the disinfection from the inside out.
No virus can live for a long time in his alcohol based metabolism.
:D

Mazepin really needs to go...ruined Seb's quali...why would he think going side by side with a rapidly approaching car coming was a good idea?

apparently Mick passed him while he should be in front, so he flipped his lid and wanted to get back at him and therefore blocking seb. both Will Buxton and dutch pitreporter saying he was fuming in the paddock
