Notes:
Version 3 updates the Arden BSCC winning car to use at last correct 12” tyres. This of course changes the performance and handling, so Arden version has it's own physics now. 1969 cars have now two physics varieties.
Version 2.5 fixes the starter motor in all versions (car can be now restarted if it stalls) and also adds new Historic Racing variation. This new variation is otherwise same as the 1965 car, except it features twin 25 liter tanks, helping a lot when ran against original in game cars. New variation can be found in game as just ”Mini Cooper 970S”.
Version 2.1 fixes small things on physics (like 1968 cars not leaving from pits in all tracks) and also adds the real Mk I 'S' bumpers made by Papag21. They look great and are the final touch superceding the original cars in game. Last, but not least, 1965 version got itself new tyre physics and the weight is reducted by 3 kgs to official homologation weight.
Wheeh... the version 2.0 of this mod is at last here. It took a lot longer than I expected and work was several times suspended due missing inspiration, time, other projects, lucas electronics, etc. However, this version is actually completely new mod; This one has complete two new structures and 4 different physics spreading over 5 years. Technically this mod is not presenting single car, but in fact the timeline how the small S developed over the years.
The Story:
Soon after release Cooper S 1071cc, BMC found out that they needed engines which would fit better in track racing. 1071cc was long stroke engine which greatly reduced it's tuning potential and revving capabilities. In rally where more lower end torque was needed, 1071cc showed that Mini had potential to be the giant killer, but more torque and power would not hurt. Two different engines were developed by changing the stroke of the 1071cc. Able to homologate the one of the new engines to under 1000cc category, the stroke was shortened by 6,4 mm which resulted 970cc engine. To make the engine handle higher rpms, crank and piston rods got nitrided which greatly improved the strenght of engine. 970cc was also perfect combined with the bore being 70.6mm. This made possibility to overbore the block to 999cc to fit car exactly to class "engine capacity under 1000cc".
When the homologation process of cars had started, BMC decided to run one of the these new small S'es in 1964 European Touring Car Championship. As the Cooper Cars was busy, Ken Tyrrell was given task to run Minis in 1000cc Class. Tyrrell picked up Warwick Banks as driver and John handley as reserve. This proven ver good selection as Warwick Banks pretty much won his class in every single event of the championship and also picking up the overall title. By with this, he gave first international track championship for the Mini. This car is represented in mod as skin #2.
As In 1965 Warwick Banks was signed to BSCC for Works Cooper 970 S by Cooper Cars Ltd. Banks won his class in 3 first races with an ease and became favorite for overal champion. In next two races he failed to finish and situation changed. In the end of the season, he found himself as first runner up with exactly same points as with the Roy Pierpoint driving Ford Mustang in higher class. Before the last race, Banks needed better result in his class than what Pierpoint would do in his. Banks had ernomous battle against John Handley driving Broadspeed's similar small S, but in the end Banks took the class victory with just 0.2 seconds. Pierpoint again finished 2nd in his class as Jack Brabham took the flag first. However in after race inspection, Brabham's Mustang was declared illegal due triple valve springs which were not found from homologation, so after Brabham's Disqualification, Pierpoint found himself winning his class and Championship overal, as while Banks had DNF from two (usually uncounted) worst results, Pierpoint had scored 12 points from them and was declared as champion. From 1965 BSCC mod presents skins #1 which is Banks' car fromn Silverstone and #143 driven by John Fitzpatrick who won the 1000cc class in Crystal Palace.
After 1965, the small S seems to be gotten forgotten for few years as no BSCC nor ETCC results show almost no entries for 1966 and 1967. In 1966 BSCC moved to modified Group 5 rules, which might had an effect how competitive the small S was thought to be.
However in 1968 and 1969 This Changed and the car rose to the top again once more.
In 1968, ETCC followed BSCC by moving to use Group 5 classification, which allowed the teams much more radical modifications to car than previously used Group 2 cars. The Championship was divided to different divisions by engine displacement. Division 1 was for cars from 0-1000 cc, division 2 1001-1600 cc, and division 3 for over 1600 cc. BMC decided to give factory support to two teams and while Cooper Car Company ran two 1275cc Cooper S'es in Division 2, British Vita Racing was given full factory support to build cars for Division 1. As the result, while BMC rally team started to really struggle against newer cars like Alpine A110 and Ford Escort, in ETCC BMC took 2 out 3 possible Championships. John Handley winning Division 1 and John Rhodes winning Division 2 after very close battle. Mod presents both Vitamins from 1968 ETCC season, Alec Poole's as #20 and John Handley's champion winning car as #30
In 1969 BMC was under reforming due big financial problems and all international racing activies were reduced to minimum. Not only the BMC decided to consentrate mostly BSCC in racing, but also ended the race team agreetments with private teams like Vita and Cooper Cars. They decided that Abington that previously was responsible for Rallying, should now run the BSCC effort. Cooper however decided to run own cars and after several agreetments, Cooper-Downton-Britax team signed up for the season as well. Both in 1300cc Class. Sneakly, small team called Equippe Arden with long long expertice tuning Minis and running them in BSCC, decided to build Cooper S for the 1000cc class. As the Cooper-Downton and Abington Works teams took what was thought to be the elite of Mini Racing Drivers, Equippe Arden signed Alec Poole, who had been years driving in different teams as second driver. Again this little screamer in experienced hands took classs win after class win and Poole took the overall championship. And yes, this car is also in this mod as skin #261. unlike rest of the pack, this one is TC-76.
After 1969, 1000cc Cooper S'es kept racing in private teams around the globe. Poole's Winning car ended up to New Zealand where it's chassis and engine ended up as different cars, but nevertheless winning national championships next few years. However in international level, the 1000cc class was dying as more powerful cars were wanted. Not even the fuel crisis got the class alive.
