Congrats Ben on the title, deserved champion and I think the first one to win it thanks to a strong early season. Hats off to Rami as well, great comeback considering your gap to Ben was 37 points after round 5.

Happy to have secured third in the standings, got pretty close in the end with Tim.

Also thanks Ben for the 2 seasons as teammates, shame how this season turned out for you, especially as your strong results in 98 got us the constructors championship.

Utzer wins the title
Winning the Japanese Grand Prix Ben Utzer has taken his first career title, ultimately beating teammate Rami Saidy. The Brit suffered a gearbox failure in lap 39, robbing him of every chance. At the start Utzer could immediately get past Saidy, which also was necessary in order to make his 2 stop strategy work. Poirier lost 3rd in the opening laps, and dropped further back as the race progressed. Foro with electrical problems had to make an early stop, and found himself in last after that. Pablo Diehl retired in lap 9 with a broken suspension. Ancevski another driver who couldn't hold on to his grid spot, while there's no doubt about his good qualifying pace, he's clearly lacking speed in the races. On top of that he made an error while fighting for 13th with Martins, spinning off in Spoon.
When Utzer pitted at the end of lap 18 his lead over Saidy was 20 seconds. That wasn't enough however to stay ahead, he returned just in front of Kederer and 5 seconds behind Saidy. Thanks to his fresh tyres he could close up quickly, despite the heavier fuel load. In lap 24 he retook the lead, passing Saidy going into 130R. The one stoppers all pitted in the following few laps. Utzer's lead was over 20 seconds, while Saidy also had a comfortable gap to 3rd placed Kederer. Néron was in 4th, but he had to make another stop. Engberink right behind him in 5th, with his teammate Laad in 6th. Second retirement of the day when Black's car suddenly slowed down with a gearbox failure. In lap 32 Said threw away his chances for a decent result, running wide in turn 1 and losing many seconds and places.
In lap 36 Utzer came in for his second stop, and this time his lead was big enough to stay ahead of Saidy. The Brit was only 3 seconds behind, but with Utzer on fresher tyres it would be a difficult task to pass him. He shouldn't get the chance to do so though, starting lap 39 his gearbox failed and he slowly rolled off the track in turn 1. The positions in the front remained unchanged in the remaining laps, Utzer took the win with a comfortable gap to Kederer in second. Engberink came home in third, just ahead of his teammate Laad. The former champion lost valuable time while lapping Rautavaara and Said, else he might have had a chance to get past his teammate. 5th and 6th went to Buurlage and Néron.
