Lancaster shows what he’s made of

01-08 Race one

Leader from start to finish, Comtec Racing’s Jon Lancaster claims his first Formula Renault 3.5 win. To do it, the British driver had to hold off countless attacks from International Draco Racing's Bertrand Baguette who was seemed determined to take first place. The two drivers were joined on the podium by Carlin Motorsport’s Jaime Alguerusuari.

Due to the extreme heat, the race was shortend from 44 minutes + 1 lap to 35 minutes + 1 lap. Taking advantage of the reverse-grid, Jon Lancaster was in pole position ahead of Epsilon Euskadi’s Chris Van der Drift and Dani Clos, and KMP Group/SG Formula’s Guillaume Moreau.

Lancaster got off to a flying start ahead of Moreau while Baguette made a clean start from the third row. The start was action packed, with a collision between Van der Drift and Clos, which forced Carlin Motorsport’s Oliver Turvey to give them a very wide berth. Turvey was now in ninth and Clos in fourteenth, while Van der Drift was forced to retire. Lancaster finished the first lap ahead of Baguette. The Belgian took advantage of Guillaume Moreau on the start-finish straight. After a collision between Tech 1 Racing's Daniel Ricciardo and Prema Powerteam's Julian Leal, the safety car was brought out on the second lap.

Lancaster held onto first place at the restart, but Baguette was piling on the pressure. The two drivers were unable to make the break from each other, while Moreau along with Tech 1 Racing’s Charles Pic, Jaime Alguersuari, RC Motorsport’s Pasqual DiSabatino and Ultimate Motorsport’s Miguel Molina had made up ground on them. Miguel Molina left the group when he made a mistake under braking attempting to pass DiSabatino, and dropping back to 14th place.

The outcome was looking harder and harder to predict. Lancaster held off Baguette as best he could, while Moreau did everything within his power to prevent Pic from overtaking him. Meanwhile Alguersuari had his own fight holding off DiSabatino. Charles Pic was the first to make the break, overtaking Moreau, who got his own back almost immediately. Jaime Alguersuari took advantage of the situation to overtake Pic and snatch fourth place. He then set about Guillaume Moreau and climbed into third place. At the same time, Marco Barba overtook Pasqual DiSabatino to take 6th place.

Ten minutes from the finish, the safety car came out once more to separate the cars of Daniil Move, Oliver Turvey and Pasqual DiSabatino who had become entangled at the hairpin. Lancaster was in the lead once more after the restart, but within the chasing pack, the overtaking never stopped for a moment. James Walker took sixth place and Charles Pic pulled off a smart maneuver when he overtook Guillaume Moreau to gain fourth.

In the end, 20 year-old Lancaster kept his cool and took his second victory in the discipline ahead of Baguette, Alguersuari Pic and Moreau.
