Hungaroring First Race

13-06-09:
First win for Fairuz Fauzy
Podium-Hungaro-78.jpg
Fairuz Fauzy (Mofaz Fortec Motorsport) led the race from start to finish to take his first win in Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Benefitting from the reverse grid procedure, the Malay driver led into the first bend and successfully contained Marco Barba (International Draco Racing) and Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing) all the way to the chequered flag.

With the advantage of the reverse grid procedure, Fairuz Fauzy started the first race on pole ahead of Marco Barba, Brendon Hartley (Tech 1 Racing) and Bertrand Baguette. When the lights went out, Fauzy led into corner one despite the threat from Brendon Hartley. But the Briton braked too late and span off. Fauzy led the race from then on, chased by Marco Barba, Bertrand Baguette, James Walker (P1 Motorsport) and Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport). Further back, Michaël Herck (Interwetten.com Racing) hit the pit wall at the start after making contact with Federico Leo (Pons Racing).

The four leaders quickly created a gap, with Fauzy ahead of Barba, Baguette and Walker. Behind them, Jaime Alguersuari had to contend with Marcos Martinez and Miguel Molina, always looking for opportunities to pass. Back in the main field, Daniil Move (P1 Motorsport), in eleventh place, was also doing his best to fend off challenges from Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing) and Edoardo Mortara (KMP Group / SG Formula). The two chasers got increasingly impatient with every passing lap. Then Charles Pic made a first attack and Edoardo Mortara took advantage of it to get past the Frenchman before moving on Daniil Move.

At the front, the positions stabilized with seven cars spread over just six seconds. With drivers settling into observation mode, the arrival of the safety car, after Filip Salaquarda (Prema Powerteam) went off the track, produced a regrouping of the field. At the restart, Fairuz Fauzy held his lead, ahead of Barba, Baguette, Walker and Alguersuari. Meanwhile Marcos Martinez was obliged to contain Miguel Molina, Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport) and Jon Lancaster (Comtec Racing), all determined to shake up the established order.

But the rankings were to stay put to the finish. So Fairuz Fauzy succeeded in taking his first win of the season ahead of Marco Barba and Bertrand Baguette. The Belgian driver caught up some points on Marcos Martinez, who finished sixth. Jaime Alguersuari, in fifth place, was the first of the Rookies.

Hungaroring Race Two

DiSabatino wins chaotic second race
14 June 2009

DiSabatino-81.jpg

Having opted for a very early change of tires, Pasquale DiSabatino took advantage of an incident-packed race to claim his first win in Formula Renault 3.5 Series, ahead of Marco Barba and Julian Leal, the three on the same winning race strategy. Despite retiring, Marcos Martinez holds onto his overall leadership of the championship and will therefore get to drive in the ING Renault F1 Team exhibition at Silverstone.

For the first time of the season, Martinez started from pole position ahead of countryman Miguel Molina. Martinez and Molina held their positions as the race got underway. It was Bertrand Baguette who made the best start, slotting into third place, ahead of Charles Pic, James Walker, Brendon Hartley and Jaime Alguersuari. The first lap was marked by a multiple collision, which forced the Safety Car out. For Adrian Zaugg, Adrian Valles, Filip Salaquarda, Greg Mansell and Oliver Turvey, the race was over while Edoardo Mortara got off more lightly and had to pit to change his front wing.

As the green flag was shown, Martinez was held up at the side of the track with a gearbox sensor failure, and had to leave his rivals to resume the fight without him. Bertrand Baguette made the perfect restart and got past Miguel Molina at the end of the pit straight. The Belgian led from Miguel Molina, Charles Pic, James Walker and Brendon Hartley, Hartley pressed by Jaime Alguersuari. As the Spanish driver tried an overtaking manoeuvre, they came into contact, resulting in Brendon Hartley dropping back to last place, while Jaime Alguersuari took the advantage to move up to fifth.

More drama followed with James Walker crashing at the entrance to the pit lane and Edoardo Mortara crashing out of the race at the same moment. The safety car came out action ahead of Bertrand Baguette, Miguel Molina, Charles Pic and Jaime Alguersuari. The race positions stayed the same as the race restarted, but the leaders now had to pit for tire changes, unlike drivers who'd gone for the early change. By pitting before the Safety Car neutralized the race, DiSabatino, Marco Barba, Julian Leal, Chris Van der Drift and Michael Herck executed the perfect - if unwitting - race strategy. Baguette now found himself back in 6th, ahead of Fairuz Fauzy and Charles Pic, while Miguel Molina retired with a faulty accelerator sensor.

Pasquale DiSabatino took his first win in this Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Despite having to retire, Marcos Martinez stays top of the overall standings, on equal points with Bertrand Baguette. But with three wins to his credit, it's the Spanish driver who gets to drive in the ING Renault F1 Team exhibition at the next meeting in Silverstone.

Martínez wins first race at Silverstone

04 July 2009

Martinez-54.jpg

Before getting behind the wheel of the Renault F1 R28 for the ING Renault F1 Team exhibition, in front of a big Silverstone crowd, Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing) got a good result for himself, driving to his fourth win of the season in Formula Renault 3.5 Series, stretching his points lead in the overall standings. He finished ahead of Malaysian driver Fairuz Fauzy (Mofaz Fortec Motorsport) and British driver Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport).

The reverse grid rule gave the advantage to Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing) and Marcos Martinez. Equal on points in the overall standings of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, the two drivers shared the front row, with the Belgian on pole and the Spaniard number 2. Marcos Martinez got the best start and led into turn one ahead of Bertrand Baguette, Daniil Move (P1 Motorsport) and Fairuz Fauzy.

The leader group stayed compact behind Marcos Martinez. Bertrand Baguette had to stave off the attacks from Daniil Move, himself under pressure from Fairuz Fauzy. Just behind them, Oliver Turvey battled it out with James Walker (P1 Motorsport), Brendon Hartley (Tech 1 Racing), Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport) and Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing). The situation shifted when Move went onto the grass and the Russian driver dropped back to 8th.

Fairuz Fauzy inherited third, with Turvey and Walker breathing down his throat. The battle for tenth place was just as contested, with dog-fighting between Spanish drivers Marco Barba (International Draco Racing), Adrian Valles (Epsilon Euskadi) and Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport). Molina overtook Valles in lap 6, then moved up to attack Barba. Molina got the upper hand and found himself in 10th place. A 10th place shortly to become 9th as Daniil Move stopped in the pits to clear out side pods clogged with grass.

Half way through the race, Marcos Martinez had earned a one second lead. Behind him, the fight between Baguette and Fauzy was raging hard but fair. Fairuz Fauzy moved up level with Bertrand Baguette in lap 19. The Belgian driver braked as late as he could but couldn't stay on the tarmac. He came out 6th, just ahead of Jaime Alguersuari who promptly got past him as well. Ten minutes from the chequered flag, it was Marcos Martinez in command ahead of Fauzy, Turvey, Walker, Hartley, Alguersuari, Baguette, Pic and Molina.

However, the end of the race saw Marcos Martinez suffer, his wheels regularly locking up in braking. Fairuz Fauzy asked for nothing better than to come back at the leader. The Spaniard nevertheless managed to hold onto his position right up to the chequered flag. By notching up his fourth victory of the season, he reinforces his position as overall leader. Other podium places went to Fairuz Fauzy and Oliver Turvey.

Baguette grabs championship lead with win

Le Mans 18 July,

Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing) has done himself a lot of good today, claiming his first win of the season ahead of Pasquale diSabatino (RC Motorsport) and Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport), who once again finishes on the podium. With neither Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing) nor James Walker (P1 Motorsport) in the points, the Belgian takes command of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship

As always, the first eight qualified from the Superpole lined up in reverse order on the race 1 grid. This put Marco Barba (International Draco Racing) on pole position ahead of Pasquale diSabatino. Having been the fastest man in the SuperPole, Jon Lancaster (Comtec Racing), would normally have set off in 8th place. However, due to a penalty picked up at Silverstone, he dropped back 4 positions to start from the 12th row.

At the start, Pasquale diSabatino drew up level with Marco Barba. Bertrand Baguette took advantage of the configuration and managed to get past his two rivals, though slight contact was made in the process. So the Belgian took command of the race as the safety car came into action to clear way cars belonging to the unfortunate Adrian Zaugg (Interwetten.com Racing) and Anton Nebylitskiy (KMP Group / SG Formula).

Bertrand Baguette made a perfect restart and held his lead. The Belgian pulled away further lap after lap, while Pasquale diSabatino, in second, was busy containing Marco Barba, Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport) and Oliver Turvey as best he could. Tech 1 Racing drivers were a little further back in the field, with Edoardo Mortara from Charles Pic, while a battle for 8th place raged, with Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport) and Jon Lancaster taking no prisoners. Lancaster got himself an inside position at the La Chapelle turn and moved past Molina into 8th place. The Leeds driver immediately caught Charles Pic and started pressing for 7th position.

Pic fought tooth and nail and rather than give in to Lancaster's attacks, he got past his team-mate in braking in the Dunlop chicane in lap 14. Lancaster followed him one lap later. Charles Pic was now 6th ahead of Lancaster and Edoardo Mortara.

Up front, Bertrand Baguette was enjoying his lead. The Belgian had a solid 5 seconds over Pasquale diSabatino with a quarter of an hour to go. diSabatino had Marco Barba looming ever closer in his rear views. Barba found an opening in the 18th lap, though this involved cutting the Dunlop chicane, and … picking up a ten second penalty for himself at the end of the race.

So, in the final analysis, the battle for 3rd between Pasquale diSabatino, Jaime Alguersuari and Oliver Turvey turned into a battle for second. Oliver Turvey took advantage of Alguersuari's error to move up a position. After that, the order would remain the same. So Bertrand Baguette succeeded in taking his first win of the season ahead of Pasquale diSabatino and Oliver Turvey. With this result, the Belgian driver moves to the top of the overall standings.

Baguette wins second race at Le Mans

19 July 2009

Already having taken the win in race 1 at Le Mans the day before, Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing) makes it a clean sweep this weekend, driving to victory ahead of Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport) and Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport), on the podium for the first time this season. This win allows Bertrand Baguette to move clear of his rivals. He goes away from Le Mans with a 19 point lead

A hesitant start from the all-British front row of Jon Lancaster (Comtec Racing) and James Walker (P1 Motorsport), was enough to let in Bertrand Baguette and Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing). The two drivers moved up to second and third behind James Walker, pole-sitter Jon Lancaster emerging back in fourth place, ahead of Jaime Alguersuari and Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport).

While James Walker and Bertrand Baguette made their getaway, behind them Charles Pic held off unceasing attacks from Jon Lancaster as he tried to come back. Just behind them, Jaime Alguersuari led the chasing pack with Oliver Turvey, Miguel Molina, Edoardo Mortara (Tech 1 Racing) and Daniil Move (P1 Motorsport) on his tail, while Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing) had to throw in the towel with a damaged front bonnet and braking system problems.

On lap 5, Charles Pic went into the pits with a rear right puncture. In so doing, he unwittingly got the round of compulsory pitstops underway, but he also lost a lot of time. Jaime Alguersuari and Miguel Molina were the first of the leaders to stop for tire changes, followed one lap later by James Walker, who also lost time in the pits. Bertrand Baguette, Jon Lancaster and Oliver Turvey chose to stay out on track longer.

Finally, Bertrand Baguette won the pitstop battle and emerged a the new leader. The Belgian driver led from Miguel Molina, who also made a very good pitstop, Jaime Alguersuari, Jon Lancaster and James Walker. Bertrand Baguette pushed hard and built up a lead of almost three seconds over Miguel Molina. Lying third, and in the process of conquering his first podium finish of the season, Jaime Alguersuari had to be on constant lookout for Jon Lancaster, ready to exploit any opportunity. But the Catalan held his position perfectly. In fifith place with five minutes to go, James Walker span off and let in Fairuz Fauzy (Mofaz Fortec Racing). Walker fell back to 10th.

Bertrand Baguette held his own all the way to the chequered flag to take his second win of the weekend. Taking full advantage of his rivals' misfortunes, the Belgian driver has therefore made a vital break in the championship stakes, and now has a 19 point lead over Marcos Martinez. Miguel Molina, who finished third, also moves up the standings to 6th place. Jaime Alguersuari was able to savour his first podium, plus the win in the rookie category. The fight for 4th place went to the last lap. Fairuz Fauzy got the better over Lancaster, who finishes fifth ahead of Edoardo Mortara.

Ricciardo to join World Series in Portugal
Ricciardo-97.jpg
24 July 2009

Daniel Ricciardo, current leader of the British Formula 3 Championship, will be joining Renault's World Series in Portugal next weekend. The Australian Carlin driver, with be driving the 3.5 litre car for the Tech 1 squad at the Portimao circuit.
Heading into Friday's British F3 race at Spa with pole position and a 12-point championship advantage over Austria's Walter Grubmüller, Ricciardo's outing in the World Series will be his debut in the formula. "It's really Red Bull's decision," Ricciardo, told Autosport on stepping into the cockpit of Kiwi Brendon Hartley, who in turn will be driving in the F3 Euro Series in Germany.

"Brendon is the regular driver but he's not available next weekend and I guess I sprang up in their minds; it's a good thing they want to give me a shot and Tech 1 are a championship-winning team so it's a great way to start - I'm not really sure what to expect, but I'm not expecting to be at the back!"

Is Daniel setting himself any targets? "I hope to give some competition and just compare myself to Charles Pic because he's won races and is quick," 20-year-old Ricciardo replied. "If I can challenge Charles, that won't be a bad effort; it's also a chance to get in some laps and learn the track before the penultimate round of F3. I'm looking forward to it - it's two long races and it's probably going to be hot so I guess coming from the outback will help!"

Alguersuari wins second race at Portimao

01 August 2009

Portugal-start-R1-44.jpg

After a successful F1 debut, Carlin Motorsport's Jaime Alguersuari has tasted victory with his first Formula Renault 3.5 Series win. Starting from pole position, the Catalan driver finished ahead of Tech 1 Racing's Charles Pic and KMP Group/SG Formula's Guillaume Moreau. This win moves him into third place in the championship, 36 points behind leader, Internaitonal Draco Racing's Bertrand Baguette.

Jaime Alguersuari was in pole position for the second race in front of France's Charles Pic. Weakened by a cold, the Frenchman got the better start and finished the first lap ahead of Alguersuari and Moreau, who got the better of Carlin Motorsport's Oliver Turvey at the end of the pit-straight.

Pic, who went wide in the second lap, allowed Alguersuari to get the better of him. The Catalan took control of the race, while Pic had to hold off Moreau, Turvey, Baguette and Epsilon Euskadi's Dani Clos. Clos managed to overtake Baguette on the third lap to steal fifth place.

While all this was happening, Pons Racing's Marcos Martinez made a mistake and put his car out of the race. But everything was going well for championship leader Bertrand Baguette. After a running wide at the start of the race he was making steady progress, overtaking Dani Clos and Oliver Turvey to claim fourth place.

As solid as ever, Alguersuari set one fastest lap after another, building up his lead over Charles Pic to more than five seconds by the halfway mark. In third, Moreau was one second behind Pic. Things were altogether less clear in the fight for fifth place as Dani Clos and Ulitmate Motorport's Miguel Molina were neck and neck.

Ten minutes from the finish, the security car put in an appearance after a collision between Comtec Racing's Jon Lancaster and KMP Group/SG Formula's Anton Nebylitsky. The Russian was unable to avoid the British driver, who had lost control, spinning his car. The race resumed for two more laps. Charles Pic had clawed back Alguersuari's lead at the restart. But the Spaniard took a great line on the exit to the turn 1 and reclaimed first place. Behind them Molina was having a field day, overtaking Clos and Baguette to move up to fourth place.

Alguersuari claimed his first Formula Renault 3.5 Series win in front of Pic and Moreau. Moreau, meanwhile, gave KMP Group/SG Formula their first podium finish in the class. Finishing fifth, Baguette nevertheless had a good overall result for the weekend, leaving Portugal with a 31 point lead over P1 Motorsport's James Walker and 36 points over Jaime Alguersuari, now third in the points.
