Chris van der Drift makes race debut in World Series by Renault

Chris van der Drift is set to make his race debut in the ultra competitive World Series by Renault in Barcelona this weekend. The 23 year old Kiwi has been invited by the Spanish race team Epsilon Euskadi to compete for them after several test sessions for the team earlier this year. For the 2008 International Formula Master champion this means yet another step higher on the motorsport ladder and a new challenge to achieve a high ranking in this class.

Watched the race on Eurosport, was pretty good stuff and quite a few names I recognise. I think Force India have got there design stolen from Baguette's team coz they look identical! Turvey was good in 4th :) Cant wait for Race Two :)

After leading the race from start to finish, Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing) takes the win in the first round of this season's Formula Renault 3.5 Series, claiming his first success in the discipline. The Spaniard finishes ahead of Bertrand Baguette (International Draco) and Adrian Valles (Epsilon Euskadi). Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport) is best rookie driver.

The reverse grid system was in operation for the first race of the season, so it was Adrian Valles on pole position this afternoon under the Barcelona sun, with Marcos Martinez, Bertrand Baguette and Oliver Turvey behind him at the start. The first mishap came in the formation lap with Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing) losing control and crashing into a tire wall. The race was over before it started for the hapless French driver!

Adrian Valles span his wheels on the start grid, letting Marcos Martinez through to lead into the first turn, with Bertrand Baguette, Adrian Valles, Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport) and Oliver Turvey in hot pursuit. Federico Leo (Pons Racing) and Frankie Provenzano (Prema Powerteam) found themselves limping back into the pits after a coming together in what was an eventful first lap. Behind leader Marcos Martinez, Adrian Valles, Jaime Alguersuari and Oliver Turvey were all putting the pressure on second placed Bertrand Baguette. Further back down the field, Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport), in 13th, was in a hurry to get past Brendon Hartley (Tech 1 Racing). Molina's greater experience eventually told as he found the way through.

Up front, there were changes in the race order when Oliver Turvey got the better of team mate Jaime Alguersuari, to move up into 4th place in the 7th lap. Meanwhile Martinez was pulling away. After the first quarter hour, he had stretched his lead to almost two seconds. Behind him the battle between Bertrand Baguette and Adrian Valles got critical as the Spaniard moved up alongside the Belgian driver at the end of the straight. Baguette bent but didn't snap and held onto his second place. Oliver Turvey took advantage of the tussle to get back to within striking distance of the two drivers.

Miguel Molina was the one providing the race action further back in the field. After getting past Brendon Hartley and Greg Mansell (Ultimate Motorsport), he moved to attack Daniil Move in a struggle for 9th position. The Russian defended his position tooth and nail, bur the Spaniard finally found the opening in lap 15. Move then had to cope with constant pressure from Pasquale DiSabatino (RC Motorsport), Greg Mansell, Brendon Hartley, Adrian Zaugg (Interwetten.com Racing) and Haralds Segelmilhs (Comtec Racing). It was Zaugg who was to come out on top in this group, taking over 10th place, ahead of DiSabatino and Hartley.

The last few minutes of the race were interminable for the whole Pons Racing team. Marcos Martinez had to deal with a comeback from Baguette and Valles towards the end of the race, but he held his lead to the finish line, to take the win ahead of Bertrand Baguette and Adrian Valles. Oliver Turvey was best rookie, finishing ahead of Jaime Alguersuari and Chris Van der Drift (Epsilon Euskadi).

Marcos Martinez commented on his win: "In free practice, we had a problem with the differential, so we couldn't work properly. In qualifying, I managed to get into the first eight and that was my goal. The car worked like clockwork today. It's great to take my first win here."

Spa Result's first race

Spa,May 2 First race:

Continuing where he left off a fortnight ago in Barcelona, Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing) takes his third win in a row at Spa-Francorchamps, putting him firmly in the lead of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship. The Spaniard finishes ahead of Belgian Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing), who also impressed today by making a fine comeback from 8th place on the grid. The podium trio is completed by Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport).

Marco Barba took advantage of the reverse grid rule to start race 1 on pole position. Marcos Martinez and Daniil Move (P1 Motorsport) overtook him though, as soon as the lights went out. Barba now lay third, ahead of Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing).

At the end of lap 1, Marcos Martinez led from Daniil Move, Marco Barba and Charles Pic. In fourth place, Bertrand Baguette lay some way behind the three leaders and was working hard to keep Miguel Molina, James Walker (P1 Motorsport) and Brendon Hartley (Tech 1 Racing) at bay. Out in front, Marcos Martinez began to pull away from Daniil Move. The battle for third raged between Marco Barba and Charles Pic. Bertrand Baguette, Miguel Molina and James Walker took advantage to make up ground and come back on the two front-men. Charles Pic was to pay heavily as Bertrand Baguette then Miguel Molina both overtook him.

Behind Marcos Martinez, positions began to bunch up. Daniil Move was joined by a group composed of Barba / Baguette / Molina / Pic and Walker. Further down the field, Brendon Hartley, in 8th, was also having to defend his position against Pasquale di Sabatino (RC Motorsport), Chris Van der Drift (Epsilon Euskadi), Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport) and Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport).

Bertrand Baguette, who had started out at 8th place on the grid, was continuing his progress through the field and overtaking team-mate Marco Barba to shift up into 3rd place by the end of the 5th lap. The Belgian quickly closed the gap on Daniil Move. After four observation laps, Bertrand Baguette made his move at the "bus stop" chicane and was now in an impressive second place. At the same time, Miguel Molina passed Marco Barba to take 4th place. One lap later, it was Charles Pic's turn to overtake the Spanish driver.

With twenty minutes left to race, Marcos Martinez had a lead of 2''5 over Bertrand Baguette. Daniil Move was third ahead of Miguel Molina, Charles Pic, Marco Barba and James Walker. The unfortunate Walker was to abandon the field for the gravel trap. This was to the advantage of Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport). Leader of the rookies, the English driver moved up to 7th place. He subsequently got the better of Marco Barba to take 6th.

Marcos Martinez drove to his third win in three races ahead of Bertrand Baguette. In the closing laps, Miguel Molina found the opening to pass Daniil Move and take third. The Russian driver was also caught off guard by Charles Pic in the last lap.

James Walker (P1 Motorsport) is first driver of the season to topple Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing). The P1 Motorsport driver's attack strategy pays dividends as he drives to the win ahead of Bertrand Baguette (International Draco Racing) and Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport). The Formula Renault 3.5 Series favourites are back!

The Belgian crowd was out in large numbers (a fantastic 78,000 spectators) to support pole-sitter Bertrand Baguette. They saw him lead into the first bend ahead of Miguel Molina, Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing), James Walker and Daniil Move (P1 Motorsport). The Belgian took a commanding position while Miguel Molina did his best to contain the attacks from Charles Pic. Pic moved up alongside the Spanish driver, but Molina was not to be intimidated and braked late. Charles Pic had no alternative but to cut across the grass. The Tech 1 Racing man got off fairly lightly considering, but dropped back to fifth, while Walker took advantage of the situation to oust Molina from second spot.

Seconds later, Arian Valles (Epsilon Euskadi) and Chris Van der Drift (Epsilon Euskadi) came together, causing the safety car to interrupt the racing. At this point, Bertrand Baguette lay first ahead of James Walker, Miguel Molina, Daniil Move, Charles Pic, Marco Barba (International Draco Racing), Marco Martinez (Pons Racing), Jaime Alguesuari (Carlin Motorsport), Oliver Turvey (Carlin Motorsport) and Pasquale di Sabatino (RC Motorsport).

Bertrand Baguette kept his position when the green flag was waived. Marcos Martinez cornered wide in the La Source hairpin, Oliver Turvey took advantage to grab 7th place. Martinez opted to pit straight afterwards and James Walker and Charles Pic followed suit a lap later. Pic lost precious time in the pits though, with an unwilling right hand wheel. As for Miguel Molina and Bertrand Baguette, they opted to wait as long as they could before the tire change.

The Belgian crowd had been hoping to see Bertrand Baguette take the win, but it was James Walker who had staked his claim to victory by the end of the series of refuelling stops. The British driver put his offset strategy to good effect getting several clear laps where he banged in quick laps. James Walker had a 1''8 lead over second placed Bertrand Baguette, and Baguette had Miguel Molina and Daniil Move close behind him to deal with.

P1 Motorsport driver James Walker then proceeded to open the gap and moved further out of reach from Bertrand Baguette and Miguel Molina. In fourth, Daniil Move couldn't keep up with the pace of the leaders and had to watch out for Marcos Martinez, Jaime Alguersuari, Oliver Turvey and Marco Barba all looming in his mirror. The last two laps were disrupted by rain. Oliver Turvey took advantage of the conditions and surprised Jaime Alguersuari in Les Combes while Marco Barba span coming up to the blind Pouhon corner.

After a troubled start to the season, James Walker got his show very much back on the road by driving to his first victory of the year, ahead of Bertrand Baguette, twice runner-up on his home circuit. Miguel Molina also took his second podium of the weekend. In the last lap, Oliver Turvey got the better of Marcos Martinez to grab 5th place. However, Turvey received a twenty-five second penalty for deviating from the racing line. So Marcos Martinez retrieved his 5th place. In sixth, Jaime Alguersuari finishes first of the rookies.

Problems for Chris van der Drift at Spa-Francorchamps

Got this in the mailbox today:
The World Series by Renault race weekend for Chris van der Drift did not go according to plan. The 23 year old New Zealander who scored a podium at Barcelona in his race debut in the class was plagued with many problems in the test sessions and in Saturday qualifying. In race one held on Saturday afternoon, the current International Formula Master champion had much better pace and starting from grid 15 the Kiwi moved though the field and finished the 45 minute race in 9th position. However in Sunday’s race two, the New Zealander was compelled to park his Epsilon Euskadi race car after contact in lap two. The Friday collective test sessions were over shadowed with a mysterious problem in the front of the racecar resulting in the front tyres wearing at an alarming rate, the issue taking some time to track down. Before the qualifying session began the car was newly rebuilt and once the session commenced the Kiwi immediately showed better pace. “In qualifying it was quite a bit better. But because we didn’t get some good testing in, we were already behind in our setup work”, said Van der Drift who eventually qualified fifteenth. The first of the weekend’s races followed early that afternoon. After a brilliant start and following that with a great drive on Eau Rouge, Van der Drift had stormed up into the top ten. Despite some minor reshuffles during the race, the Kiwi finally finished in ninth position, and second rookie home. “Just as at Barcelona the race speed was quick fortunately. Our pace was fairly constant, just four tenths away from the best lap time”, said Van der Drift. “The race wasn’t without it’s problems though as in the first half of the race the power to pass switch wouldn’t work. That’s a way to generate a temporary power boost.” The Kiwi began the Sunday second race with confidence. Again after a great start and passing manoeuvres, Van der Drift finished the first lap in ninth position after starting on grid 11. His Epsilon Euskadi team-mate was in eighth position just before the New Zealander after having made a poor start. However the anticipation was short lived when both Epsilon Euskadi drivers made contact in turn five. “First of all I want to offer my apology to the team, as this shouldn’t have happened”, related the New Zealander after the race. “My team-mate Adrian Valles was obviously a lot slower and when I saw the chance to pass on the inside I took it. The only thing was that he closed the door on me and we were both immediately out. That was such a shame and I hope I can make it good in Monaco.” Van der Drift’s next races in the World Series by Renault will be over the weekend of 24-25 May on the streets of Monaco, in the support programme to Formula 1.

Walker fastest on Thursday in Monaco

It was a full house for the Formula Renault 3.5 Series as Monaco gets underway, with all twenty six cars competing for the first time this season. In addition to the arrival of KMP Group/SG Formula, with Jules Bianchi and Anton Nebilitskiy in the seats, several other line-up changes are to be reported.

Monaco driver Stefano Coletti joins Prema Powerteam. John Martin, the Australian driver, replaces Anton Nebilitskiy in the Comtec Racing team, with Max Chilton as team-mate. At RC Motorsport, Filip Salaquadra takes the second seat.

As the first discipline to take to the track, the Formula Renault 3.5 Series drivers experienced constantly changing grip conditions during their collective testing. All drivers started out on old tyres and devoted an initial lengthy relay today to getting familiarized or re-familiarized with this very unique track. The day got off to a bad start for Marco Barba (International Draco Racing) who hit the side barriers in the Mirabeau tight right-hander.

Miguel Molina (Ultimate Motorsport) was first to clock a significant time, putting in a 1'33''429 lap. This was swiftly beaten by Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing) and then Adrian Valles (Epsilon Euskadi). Before pitting to change tyres, Miguel Molina took control again, clocking 1'30''945.

KMP Group/SG Formula had a trouble-beset start to their season. Jules Bianchi was immobilized with clutch problems and Anton Nebilitskiy came into contact with the track side barriers. He wasn't the only one, imitated seconds later by local boy Stefano Coletti. The Monaco driver, in 8th position at the time, lost control in the dangerous Sainte Dévote corner, damaging the rear end of his car.

Some drivers, particularly the Rookies, opted to fit new rubber, others sticking to old tyres. Filip Salaquadra went to top of the timing screens briefly, before being knocked off by Jaime Alguersuari (Carlin Motorsport), Adrian Zaugg (Interwetten.com Racing) and Miguel Molina, all vying for first place. But by the end of the session, James Walker had had the final word of the day, with a 1'28''290 lap. He leads from Brendon Hartley, Daniil Move, Adrian Zaugg and Jaime Alguersuari.
