1979 Italian Grand Prix

Monza hosted the thirteenth round of the championship. Both championship titles had already been decided but battle for the other medals was very much on

Carlos Reutemann's four wins in a row meant he had nothing at stake any more this season as even further wins wouldn't count to his points tally. No other driver was yet in a position to drop points.

Pre-qualifying

Pre-qualifying was one of the most bizarre of the season. Shadow's Patrick Gaillard was clearly the fastest driver on track but his teammate was struggling badly. Thanks to Gaillard pace, Rahal was able to take part in the qualifying for his first Italian GP.

Second fastest was Regazzoni but he too suffered from a uncompetitive teammate. Ertl's time of 1.36,4 was not enough to help his team advance from pre-qualifying in the team's home grand prix.

Qualifying
Gilles Villeneuve
was fastest already in the first qualifying session and improved his time even more in the second session. Williams's were second and third ahead of the Ferraris. Didier Pironi was in good shape in sixth. Arnoux in seventh was almost a second slower than his teammate. Companying him in the fourth row was a true surprise name - Bobby Rahal! The American youngster had been miserable in pre-qualifying but improved massively taking 8th position ahead of his French teammate.

Schekter in 11th was in a McLaren sandwich and behind them, as far back as in seventh row, was the faster Lotus driver Eddie Cheever. Tambay, Mass and Patrese were between him and teammate Daly. In the back of the grid were both Copersucar Fittipaldis, Ensign and Arrowses. Héctor Rebaque and Jan Lammers were once again outqualified.

Race
Polesitter Villeneuve got stuck on line as both Williams's breezed past him. It was especially de Angelis who got a fantastic start. The Italian lead already in the first corner and by the end of first lap had built a lead of almost five seconds over his teammate! Ferraris were the next two and in fifth another great starter Jody Scheckter who had made up six places in the start. Villeneuve, Gaillard, Arnoux, Pironi and Rahal completed the top-10. Word out for Renzo Zorzi too who made 11 places in the first lap to rise into 14th place.

Scheckter's great start didn't translate to great race pace. By lap 3 Villeneuve and both Shadows had gone past him as the South African was struggling to get out of corners. Williams in the lead were extending their lead over the chasing pack.

Apart from slipstreaming in the mid-pack there weren't many battles going on. Tightest duo in top-10 was certainly Jones-Gaillard in 5th and 6th. While Shadow was having a race of the season, Lotus' day was much more difficult. Daly had crashed with Fitipaldi on lap 12 and Cheever was cruising in 19th place among Ensigns and Rebaques.

Gaillard's good day came to an end on lap 17 when his Engine blew up. At this moment the order of top-10 was: de Angelis, Piquet, Reutemann, Villeneuve, Jones, Scheckter (last in the points), Arnoux, Ickx, Rahal, Rosberg.

Race went on and apart from Reutemann's gearbox problems there were no major incidents among the leaders. Gaps got gradually larger but after last stops the battle for 4th intensified nicely. Jones and Scheckter were battling for fourth but Rahal's later pit stop meant he had a lot fresher tyres and was able to catch and overtake the duo quite easily, earning the American the first points of his career. The three points also rise Shadow to 12th in the constructor's standings which means no pre-qualifying for next season and more ever-so-important prize money.

Although there was much rejoicing in the Shadow garage, the most happy team of the day was without doubt Williams. Elio de Angelis' faultless drive in his home grand prix earned the Italian rookei the first win of his career. It was also the first victory and the first 1-2 finish for Williams as Nelson Piquet joined his teammate in an emotional podium ceremony. Gilles Villeneuve pushed hard all day long but wasn't able to match the pace of Williams.

Good to se Alan on points instead of Reutemann (sorry, but you've already won the championship pretty much :D ). Hopefully we can get the 1-2.

Come on Ligier, we can do it in the semifinal round!

1979 Canadian Grand Prix

Formula 1 returned to North America for the last two round of the champiohsip. Montreal's Île Notre-Dame Circuit hosted the penultimate round and Renault's local boy Gilles Villeneuve was obviously crowd's favourite. Many teams have already switched their development on next season's car but Tyrrell made one last push in the race to second place in the constructor's standings by bringing some upgrades to this race.

Pre-qualifying

Friday morning pre-qualifying was this time very straight forward business. Shadows were fastest, followed by Alfa Romeos and Ensigns at the bottom. Jabouille and Colombo's weekends were thus ended and they could now switch their concentration to the season finale.

Qualifying
Carlos Reutemann
returned to the pole position after six race absence. It was the fourth pole of the season for the World Champion. It wasn't an easy task though as he just barely pipped de Angelis, Piquet and Jones to snatch the pole. Scheckter in his updated Tyrrell in fifth and Villeneuve in sixth weren't far away either.

After the Canadian there was a gap of half a second to Rosberg. The Finn was once again a lot faster than teammate Fittipaldi who was to start way back from the eight row. Regazzoni surprised in 8th and was followed by Arnoux, Lotuses, Lauda, Gaillard and Pironi who wasn't as comfortable on track as his teammate. Further back teh grid there were no shocks. Héctor Rebaque and Rupert Keegan were the unfortunate two that failed to qualify.

Race
De Angelis took the lead coming into turn one from Reutemann. Jones got past Piquet and claimed third place. Rest of the pack lead by Scheckter, Villeneuve and Rosberg followed them closely. The only gap was between Gaillard and Cheever in 10th and 11th places respectively. Biggest mover of the start was Arrows' Renzo Zorzi who improved five positions into 12th. Clay Regazzoni and James Hunt were the most unfortunate ones: Regazzoni spun out in the hairpin and Hunt picked up a puncture but was able to make it back to pits.

Reutemann regained his lead on lap 2 after passing de Angelis in the hairpin. Jones in the other Ferrari however missed his braking point in the same corner and dropped down to sixth, making slight contact with Villeneuve in the midst of it all. The Renault ace dropped down to 9th for the disappointment of the home crowd.

By lap 15 of 72 Scheckter had battled his way up to third but the leading duo was getting away. Piquet, Daly and Jones were the other drivers on points at this moment. De Angelis pitted soon which helped Pironi rise to sixth. The Frenchman was having a very solid race after a difficult qualifying. Meanwhile Patrese's Alfa engine blew up and Renaults were down in 11th and 13th. Surprisingly sudden loss of speed for the French outfit!

Towards the halfway point of the race there was lots of drama in the lead. Reutemann had pitted too and was again battling with De Angelis. De Angelis made a little too optimistic move on Reutemann and the two crashed out of the race. Few laps later the other Williams was out too when Piquet's engine lost power. Massive shame for Williams after a brilliant 1-2 in the previous race. After all this Cheever was suddenly in second but pitted soon dropping to sixth and promoting Daly and Jones back into top-3. Lauda and Renaults were back in top-10 but someway behind Rosberg, Pironi and Cheever.

In the closing laps the battles calmed down a little bit. Jones was able to go past Daly but couldn't catch Scheckter who was to take his third win of the season! Daly finished in third ahead of Rosberg and Villeneuve who made a late push into the points for the delight of the home crowd. Pironi in sixth and Gaillard in seventh were the last drivers to finish on the lead lap. Emerson Fittipaldi had once again a horrible day in the office finishing two laps down in 13th after encountering problems early in the race.

Well, we don't seem to have a much good result on the second half than the first half. But it's time - the disappointment is not over...

Great performance by Jody today, no denying that it was a bit lucky, but it also has been the other way round often enough this year. Didier after a difficult qualifying too with a point, giving us a 10 point gap to 4th. Last race will be about securing that position, Williams in 2nd is probably too far away.
