Williams have failed to reach their target of a victory by Silverstone. The team wishes to make the top step at least once this season, so the pressure has not been relented from the drivers.

Bad quali effort, even worse in the race. Our reliability is insanely poor.

what a super ship race, there are absolutely no positives I can take out of it, apart from that de Vilotta finished the race. After a promising start to the year the last few races were a real big struggle for us.

Double finish for us, but we was so close to a points finish.

1979 German Grand Prix

The tenth round of the championship was held on the fast Hockenheimring. Ferrari's Carlos Reutemann had retaken the championship lead from his teammate following his win in Silverstone.

Pre-qualifying

No major drama in pre-qualifying this time. Alfa Romeos and Ensign's Colombo reigned while Jabouille just did what was needed to qualify. Shadow struggled badly and must be hoping to finish their new chassis as soon as possible.

Qualifying
Nelson Piquet
took the second pole of the season and his career with a comfortable gap of over three tenths over Renault's Gilles Villeneuve. Ferraris were surprisingly pushed to the second row. Arnoux, Rosberg, de Angelis and the Tyrrells followed in 5th to 9th positions.

Rounding out the top ten was Emilio de Villota. Arrows had found the speed they had seemed to have lost in the previous races as Zorzi had one of his best qualifying effort this season in 12th. Fittipaldi lost once again clearly to his younger teammate.

Lotuses were surprisingly slow, especially after such a strong weekend on another fast track the previous weekend. Further down there was no drama. Héctor Rebaque's 18th place perhaps the highlight of all.

Race
First lap of the race was filled with drafting on the long straights but come the end of it Piquet was still leading. Reutemann had taken second from Villeneuve who had dropped to third. Jones, de Angelis and Arnoux were the other drivers in the top-6. Behind Arnoux, Roberg was trying to hold off Scheckter whose Michelin tyres looked to be working great. The South African tried to pass the Finn into the first corner on lap 2 but ran wide. He was just able to avoid the wall and recovered in 11th behind the Arrows' and Fittipaldi.

Jones was the fastest driver early on and he overtook Villeneuve quickly. He was perhaps overdriving his car because on lap 9 the Australian had to retire following gearbox problems. Villeneuve wasn't able to enjoy his regained third place for long as he ran into similar problems on lap 15.

In the halfway point of the race around lap 23 most drivers had made one pit stop and Reutemann was now leading the race. Piquet's Ford engine had boiled causing a massive disappointment for the talented Brazilian who was still looking for his first career victory. De Angelis was flying the flag high for Williams, he found himself in second place following the high-profile retirements. Scheckter was already up to third and someway behind him Arnoux and Pironi were fighting for the 4th place. Rosberg was in sixth before Zorzi, Cheever, Takahara and Fittipaldi who just wouldn't seem to get any results this season. A few laps later he was forced to retire once again.

De Angelis and Scheckter made their second stops which helped Pironi reach second. Unfortunately he had a loose wheel and had to dive into the pits too and dropped down to 8th. Fresh Michelin rubber worked wonders though and so the trio was able to drive through the field back to their pre-stop positions in 2nd to 4th place. Winner however was very clear: Carlos Reutemann took his fifth win of the season which helps him cement his place on top of the championship standings. There weren't many battles going on in the closing laps and so Arnoux, Rosberg, Zorzi and co. could finish the race safely. René Arnoux in particular must be thrilled to finally score his first points of the season!

Among the backmarkers Copersucar Fittipaldi and Wolf both had decent races getting both cars to the finish line. That's of course pretty much all they can be happy for as Niki Lauda's spin early in the race and Wolf's miserable pace weren't really a reason to celebrate.

Time to do some maths again!

There are now five races to go so almost everything can still happen but following his fifth win, Reutemann is the clear favourite for the title. Let's look at a few different scenarios. I won't explain why and how each scenario works but remember that only the best four results from the first half and best four from the second half are counted.

Now, Reutemann was leading the championship at mid-season cut-off and with two wins already in he is almost a sure champion. Two wins also mean that only two of his next five races will count towards the championship points. Following scenarios make sure of his title (examples included):
  1. Score at least 11 points (Win & 5th or Two 2nds)
  2. Score 10 points and more total points than Alan Jones if he wins three more races this season
Jones is obviously Reutemann's biggest rival but there are three other drivers who still have a chance at the title (technically Niki Lauda too but that is a longshot of a longshot). Following scenarios make sure the trio (Scheckter/Rosberg/Daly) stays behind him (examples included):
  1. Score at least 8 points (Win / Two podiums)
  2. Score 7 points and more total points than the three drivers IF anyone of them wins four of the remaining five races
  3. Against Daly Reutemann only requires (to ensure top-4 place in the championship) two points (5th / Two 6ths in the following races). As we can see Daly's championship hopes are a longshot too.

Constructor's championship standings are interesting too. Ferrari looks to be a certain champion but the fight for second is still wide open. Constructors don't drop points so every result counts here!
Tyrrell retook second after a double points finish but Williams has been very strong after getting their new car on the grid. Lotus is consistent points finisher and Renault has a lot of speed in it. McLaren can make a comeback too if they can sort their issues that have haunted especially Emerson.

nothing for Arrows? 3 7th places and the most 7th places of them all is just a miracle, something only I can achieve :p The script is real!

Strong result for the team, after the disappointing last round we needed that. Championships both look decided, but we will continue fighting until the end.

Arrows F1 Team are proud to announce the arrival of new parts to our car for the following GP in Austria. We are hoping this should solve the reliability woes that were plaguing our car lately.

As the end of the season close-in, our current goal has change. Early in the season we were hoping to be actively in the top 10 during races, however, as the past events showed, the car is not up to the standards we hoped to achieved. So now, we aim to climb the 10th position of the constructor's championship. We have great pair of drivers and an as great engine, I'm sure this goal is one within our reach.

1979 Austrian Grand Prix

Argentinean Carlos Reutemann came to Austria as teh championship leader. Back-to-back victories in the previous two races put the 37-year old Ferrari pilot in a position where he could seal the title with a win if his teammate Jones, currently second in the standings, scored no points.

High altitude location of the Österreichring meant that turbo-Renaults would once again have a slight advantage over their competition.

Pre-qualifying
Clay Regazzoni
reigned in pre-qualifying. He was the fastest right from the start and only Shadow's Patrick Gaillard could mount a serious threat to the Swiss veteran. The four other drivers had more tight battle as they all clocked a time within 0,128 second. In the end it was Team Ensign to be sent packing for the sixth time in 11 races.

Qualifying

Qualifying sessions provided no major upsets. Gilles Villeneuve took his second pole position of the season. He was followed by Ferraris, Williams' and Arnoux. Didier Pironi was 'best of the rest' behind the top three teams before Lotuses, McLarens and improved Ligiers. Pironi's teammate Jody Scheckter was clearly the slowest driver to use Michelin tyres - he was down in 14th.

Emilio de Villota was 15th and was followed by an experienced duo of Regazzoni and Hunt. Ertl in 18th added to Alfa Romeo's decent day by beating Lauda and both Brabhams. Back of the grid saw no surprises either. Gaillard, who had shown great speed in pre-qualifying, couldn't match his pace and couldn't qualify for the race. Slowest of all was once again the young Dutchman Jan Lammers whose weekend ended in qualifying for the fifth time already.

Race
Ferraris had a good start from the right side of the grid and they took the lead in the first lap with Reutemann leading. Villeneuve held on to third. Pironi was another great starter and he was up to fourth. De Angelis, Arnoux, Fittipaldi, Piquet, Cheever and Daly completed the top-10 after first lap. Championship contender Scheckter dropped one place to 15th. Long and wide straights provided lots of drafting and battling in the mid-pack where Ligiers, Alfa Romeos, Arrows', Fittipaldis and Brabhams were swapping positions.

Early laps saw some drama in the leading group. Cheever made a slight contact with his teammate, got a puncture and retired. Another driver in big trouble was Piquet who spun in fifth lap. He rejoined the track in last place. Few laps later Alan Jones started to lose power and had to give up places to Villeneuve and de Angelis.

Villeneuve couldn't enjoy his time in second for long as the fragile Renault engine blew up once again. Jones retook third briefly but he was forced to retire a while later when his Ferrari lost all power. Problems for his challenge had helped Reutemann extend his gap to about 20 seconds. De Angelis was in second. Derek Daly was having a great race and was now up to third ahead of Arnoux, Rosberg, Fittipaldi, de Villota and Scheckter. Pironi had lost time too and he was now trailing his teammate in 9th.

De Villota and Pironi dropped out with some 20 laps to go and after that there wasn't much drama on track. Reutemann controlled the race knowing that he would be crowned the World Champion if he brought the car home in first place. De Angelis had had a good fight with the McLarens between pit stops but was able to leave them in his dust. Rosberg would also make a small error towards the end which dropped him out of the points.

Experience played out again and it was Niki Lauda who got himself oon the points once again with an errorless drive. Another Fittipaldi was on the points too as Emerson held on to his fifth place to grab his second points finish of the season. Arnoux's Renault held together for a second race in a row earning the Frenchman a three championship points. Derek Daly had a wonderful race from 8th in the grid to podium. Elio de Angelis was a very happy fellow too after taking his third second-place finish in four races.

Most happy of them all though was Carlos Reutemann. Faultless and very composed drive to get his third consecutive victory meant that he would be the 1979 Formula 1 World Champion! Six wins to his name so far this season, he undoubtedly deserves to be crowned as the first Argentinean World Champion since the great Juan-Manuel Fangio whose five championship titles is a record that will surely never be broken.

Once again lacking pace and reliability. With Williams' current form it will be hard to get back in 2nd, we'll rather have to look to defend 3rd from Lotus and McLaren.

Once again, we didn't have enough pace to take the win, but second isn't anything to complain about after that. However, once again we only have one car at the finish. It's nice to reach second in the constructors though :)
