which path does the pace car follow?

I just realized that in my tracks when the Pace Car comes out he is following the edge of the right side of the track. I take it this must be because I am missing the actual path that he would normally follow. Does anyone know what path that would be?

If this is for rFactor (or one of the gMotor engines, like GTR), then you need to record a "left path" using the ISI AIW editor. In the absence of a left path, the left line of cars will follow the center of the track (or is it the fast line... can't remember) and the right line will usually be on the shoulder, with the pace car somewhere in-between.
