What's a dog-box ?

Hmmmm, guess I need some help !

Currently trying the Star Mazda, which has a dog-box sequential (if somebody could explain what this dog-box is, that would be the first help).
Up shifts, no problem, shift any time, with or without throttle!
Down shifts... it says above, no clutch required... but do I need to go off the throttle completely? A quick lift does not help....
