The Cobra That Wasn't

You know the story. After AC Cars in England finished the last run of 427 Cobras (which didn't sell well), they had a dozen or so big-tube frames left over with the latest suspension and a dozen or so Ford 289 engines. Putting them together, they couldn't call them 'Cobras' (Ford had bought the name from Ol' Shel'), so they called the miscegenation the 'AC 289 Sports' and sold most of them in England (a couple with RHD) and a couple elsewhere in the world (mostly Stateside). One or two were raced. These are the cars that Ken Morter has masterfully recreated for AC. The lesser two are fun to drive with the top down anywhere there's scenery to gawk at (L.A. Canyons, Black Cat Country, the Transfagarasan). The full-on Competition model is a different beast; very hard to control. But worth it...it's a ****-ton faster. Try 'em (recently posted right here on RD); you'll like 'em.
