Steam overlay crash the game

Start the game.
Do a race/practice/timetrial and exit back to the menu
And if you try to use steamoverlay ams will crash even if you do another session.

Specs:
Phenom II x4 965 3,4ghz
8gb ram
sapphire amd 7790 2gb
windows 10.

As a workaround, try using borderless window, then you can simply alt+tab without issues.

This is what I do but still very annoying and it's a bug.
Sometimes because of habit I use shift+tab and crash. It is a very ooooooold habit.

Could be a related bug: pressing Escape while in-game often doesn't work for me. Nothing happens at all. If I Alt-Tab away and back and then try again, it still doesn't work.

I think it might be related because opening and closing the Steam Overlay fixed it. But opening the Steam Overlay has a risk of crashing the game, so it's not a good solution, and if it doesn't work, you're basically stuck without any way to use the menus.
