F1 2010 Manual Gear change slow

I been playing around with the game for a while and ened up finding my sweet spot ....BUT with gearbox on auto.

For some reason with manual gears the gear changes are a bit delayed ......IS that normal or are we allowed to use auto in Race mode.

ive been told that manual gear changes are faster because in auto it sometimes changes down to low a gear like into second when it should be in third. i drive with auto at the moment but im thinking of changing soon as im told that manual improves your lap times once you get used to it

I read a long time ago from a f1 game from snes that manual transmission helps by around 1/2 sec per gear change or something close to that.
